Towelie
MyGNR is one of the busiest fan forums I visit (I go on a few for different artists/bands). There are huge bands out there, like the RHCP for example, who regularly release new music, but there fanboards are like graveyards. And yet GNR have put out one relatively unsuccessful album in the last 25 years and this place is always busy. Why do you think it is that GNR have such a big online fan following? Is it testament to just how great they were 1987-1992? Edited March 28, 2018 by Towelie

default_
I believe this happens because of all the past drama and the semi-dormant current status. Theres always some weird feeling that something is going to happen, it never happens, but the feeling is always there.

Towelie
Just now, DieselDaisy said: Waiting for Godot. It is a weird thing about GNR though. Other bands who release new music on a semi-regular basis and sell out arenas/stadiums at a similar rate to Guns don't seem to have the kind of following that GNR command having done fuck all creative for the last 25 years. soon
The lack of news and material, no doubt. Other bands live in magazines and entertainment talk shows. In video interviews, new albums, contests (of value), photo shoots. But the quick disappearance in the mid-nineties just left a hole in the fan bases heart, likely? GNR is really the only reason I ever started using the internet TBH.

But if any other band or artist disappeared up their own ass and released one record in 25 years, I don't think they'd have multiple fan forums with folks dissecting every coming and going. What is it about GNR that commands this level of interest amongst us? Other than the fact that we're all obviously glutton for punishment.
Popular Post dgnr
Because the history of this band is like a plot of a Telenovela No kidding. Just think about it. All the romance about AFD5 - the main characters who came from poor backgrounds, drug and sex filled, and made it to the top of the world to then breakup - the feuds, the mystery about what's gonna happen next - will we have a happy ending? Are they gonna end up together in the last chapter?...And of course all the drama. It's so much drama with this band You just can't turn the TV off, you can't miss the next episodes 9 1

The answer is in your question. We've been together for a long time, hoping one day the band would reunite and record music again. It took decades to have Slash & Axl back together and that's thanks to the fans like us. It is the sense of community that we grew since the late 90's. At least, that's the amount of time I've been around in forums and other digital environments, looking for other fans. I am here mostly because of people, not the band. The band really does suck . At least at the moment. It's funny because as GN'R fans we have different goals according to the era. After 1993, it was to get another album. After 2001, the release of the mysterious Chinese Democracy. Once CD was out and a disappoinment, we aimed for getting Axl & Slash together (though reunion was always in our minds). Now we are still aiming for a new album or just a song. That is what keeps us together. Our goals as fans.
Popular Post Kwick1
I was just wondering this myself. There's other highly successful bands that release music and are interactive with their fanbase. GnR / Axl definitely isn't. Sometimes I think we're viewed as a nuisance. This is the exact reason I think they are still followed today. People always want what they don't have. I detest social media and smart phones and believe it's the downfall of society yet I'm now a member of this site and enjoy taking with others about GnR and the awesomeness of Axl. Like others, no one else in my immediate family or friends remain a fan. The fact is GnR touched my life like no other. Sure I've enjoyed other bands since 1992 but the difference is that after '92 I was out of law school establishing a career and following my favorite band around certainly wasn't something I would do. GnR and Axl are what is left of a very short turbulent but exciting time in my life and that is why I will always be a fan until the day I die. No matter if I am a nuisance. 4 2
BlueJean Baby
I am here because GNR has always gotten me through the rough patches in my life and I have been around the GNR forums for over 20 years, except for a few years when I was without computer access 😣 Now that I am starting my life over so to speak, I am back where I feel I need to be, showing my undying support for GNR. 😆 1

Popular Post Gracii Guns
My honest answer is that there are some great personalities on this forum. I've been here for 13 years. I had a hiatus from 2009-2012. (Which means I've been back for longer than my first stint was, which feels odd.) It's all about the people. I became addicted to this place as a teen. I never saw myself rejoining, until I randomly got back in touch with one of the members. I lurked for a while, then started posting as a noob again under a different username before rejoining under my original name. I've met 13 of you guys, who are great company in real life. I even flew across the Atlantic to spend a week with one of you. So far, there isn't one person I've met who I would not want to spend more time with. Even the people who are great writers and are a little more timid IRL weren't disappointing. I once found myself on the brink of homelessness for a few weeks in London. Someone from here (he sadly hasn't posted for many years) was happy to put me up in his flat for as long as I needed.
WhazUp
Cause we are all addicted to arguing It is a fun community all in all, I think GNR commands that type of speculation and discussion that brings a lot of interesting personalities together
Rovim
for me personally it's the story of the band and the personalities of axl and the rest of the classic line up. the music is at it's core but it's been a wild ride following their story. even lately it can still be surprising like the ac/dc thing for example. it seems there's always a curve ball you never know what might happen Edited March 28, 2018 by Rovim

Kwick1
Hmmm, reading all the responses, can I change my answer? The answer is simple, GnR has the best fans. We genuinely care about GnR but most importantly each other.
Popular Post alfierose
Whilst collectively they are all interesting characters it's Axl that separates this band from other bands (in online fandom terms). He would have made a great cult leader! His special brand of personality is largely what has brought such colourful characters into play in the fan community, so following the fandom has been as equally fascinating over the years as following the band. It didn't matter that much when the band had periods of inactivity because we just entertained ourselves. 4 3
EvanG
His special brand of personality is also the reason that for the longest time people were ashamed to admit to other people that they were GnR fans, at least in my experience.
AxlRoseCDII
There isn’t any band with such a mystique as Guns. They made it big, were active for about 6 years, and practically vanished. Yet we still know virtually none of the details and still argue about things that broke up the band to this day. But during the wilderness years, Axl and the other band members promised new music. Alleged stories of 13 million dollar budgets for CD, band members constantly going in and out, Axl being a complete shut in during the late 90’s, and countless rumors about the CD era we still don’t know. Then the 2002 tour happened and people lost their damn minds, and more questions arose, etc. No other notable band has such a weird history, and thus the people who stuck with the band during these weird years form both bonds with other members and also constantly need forums such as this to discuss any rumors or scraps of new music, since the actual band offers nothing. A band like RCHP releases new music, tours all the time, has a pretty simple history, therefore the fans don’t really need to communicate since the band actually gives them the information.
