Front row and moving around during the concert

Recommended Posts

Haven't read all but I've been to 6 shows in 2017-2018 and it really depends of the organisation.

In Werchter last year I was frontstage, stuck to the barrier (there was no EE, just golden circle), arrived very early (not far from my home) and it was possible to move but it was a festival and it started early.

In Paris last year, with all these stupid people, I was front, just behind the EE but I had to move back when they sing CD because I was too crushed.

This year in Gelsen, I was just behind the barrier and it was possible to move to take a drink for example.

In Nijmegen I went with my son this year. No problem, we were at about 2 meters from the barrier and we have arrived during Gojira, at 17.40, not in the front but in the Slash side at about 5 meters from the catwalk. It was a nice crowd, you could move and go back after.

Overall now, the gnr fans are older and some of them (like me) come with their kids. There were some at each show. So they are generally quiet, except in France where all the assholes convine a meeting.

For the Merch, it depends. In Nijmegen, there was no merch outside. So take care... I think if you want the barrier, you have to arrive very early and don't buy merch but run to the front. Remember that lots of time, there are people who wait for 1 day outside...

Sorry for my english.

Nijmegen had merch outside. Not all and no lithos, but I bought my show shirt there. But yeah, depends on the venue, I think most I've been to, didn't have merch outside. In Nijmegen, I think everything was still available after the show too.

Fun fact is : I went to the show sayin' "oh, this time, i'll enjoy the show, i'll take almost no pictures and only record it in my memory"
I got home and realized I took 510 photos....

Same as you ! I can't no stop "Oh fuck, Slash & Axl just in front of me !" " Oh fuck, Duff take a pose"

No video this time "oh fuck, I Have to spot Madagascar"...

Yes sorry, I'm wrong. But I had to buy litho so had to wait to go inside. I've also tried to buy the Nijmegen t-shirt but they only had s size. My bad.

Do they have VIP packages out there? Because in the US, it didn't matter how long you waited for doors to open or how early you got there. People with VIP were escorted into the pit before general gates opened and they all line up front and center.

I've been at row ~ 10-13 on both shows I attended. For Madrid '17 I had standard golden circle and waited outside since like 3 hours before guns. For Madrid '18 I arrived there when the band that came before Bullet for my Valentine was playing (I also like Bullet, so everything fine). For me it was a good spot, as the stage is tall and the monitors and the Nightrain trumpets give you less view if you are near. The closest I've been was Slash with MK&C at Nice 2015. I got row 2 after a moshpit, tried to sneak into row 1, but a fat french man yelled at me, so I had to abort mission:lol:

Also.. If you know, then what about the early entry guys? Don't they block the front row? Or is there only a rather small amount of EEs?

No. Those fuckers usually block it all. And they also think they own that spot with no one of the peasants being allowed to get in that row. Even if there is still space available. Only once in a blue moon you find someone letting you join that row. The only shot at front row is way on the sides, in front of the screens.

Based on the UK periscopes, apparently one just pees in a bottle and throws it at strangers. It seemed like both parties were pretty happy.

Yeah. I was close to doing that in Madrid, minus the throwing of course, as people really were standing from the moment we were let inside and there was no way to leave my front row spot and come back. Going out even would have been a problem. And I kinda felt the need to go to the toilet at 18:00 and they played until midnight.

Yikes, sounds miserable. I really respect those who go through all that for our band. But reading this thread makes it clear that its not for me.

It really depends on the venue and the type of crowd and the bands. For GNR I was front row only once, but went back a few lines after the first songs to stand more comfortable and even dance a bit. At another concert they had those wristbands and made sure the FOS was not too crowded, so you could go pee or get drinks and get back in to pole position or a similar spot just fine.

Well. That is a worst case scenario. Usually I've always been able to get out and get back. But once the show starts you usually forget about the problem. Well, shows that are not 3 1/2 hours long. ;) I was fine for 2 hours, but from Slash's solo on it kinda got tedious and it dragged on a bit. But either way it was worth it. Rather explode than give up a front row center spot.

I was very fortunate at 2 of the MSG shows in Oct'17 that I was able to get right up on the barricade in Pit 1 (Duff's side) after getting there like 45 minutes before the show started.  That was the only time I was in the absolute front for an entire show.  I got about 4 rows back for night 2 of Hammerstein back in 2006.

Update: All your info was really helpful!

Went to the Chorzow venue about 4,5 hours ahead. Met some super cool people! EE had shitloads of people. When they got in, we got intel that first rows were already fully taken. Ended up second row on Duffs side for most of the show. Had rail during Paradise (!!!) :P Went absolutely batshit and danced my ASS off. No problems with that. It was a bit funny as some people next to me really didn't dance at all. But to each their own

I have a lot of hair so at times I had to make sure that I didn't constantly hit someone in the face with my hair. Worked out fine luckily.

Having friends/ meeting new people was really helpful and cool. No family like the GnR family! People went to get water during the support acts and at times it took them 40 minutes to get back but everything was cool. As we ran in, I didn't go to the bathroom for at least 10 hours. Luckily that wasn't really a problem because water was REALLY short. Security ran out of it and quite a few people had to be escorted out (from dehydration, it appeared).

The GC gates opened 16:30 (4:30pm) sharp. Merch opened at 13 (1pm). Had a friend of mine buy us merch and put it into our car. Couldn't have imagined having to carry it around with me during dancing

Definitely the best night in my life.

TALLINN tomorrow! SO EXCITED! Hope to meet you guys there :headbang:

Great you had a good show. I heard EE sucked in Poland. Apparently it was a lot cheaper than at other venues and no VIP gift included? That's what I heard anyway. If you're not guaranteed a front row spot then I don't see the purpose of EE anyway. I would be so pissed  I think they should only sell a limited amount of EE tickets. But I'm glad you had a good time and managed to get a good spot anyway!

The only time I went front row was London 2002, back when I was a youngster. I was to the right, on Robins side of the stage, wish ya could have been there @RussTCB :P Since then I've been happy to hang back a bit. I enjoy it more being 10-15 rows from the front where the crowd doesn't crush you as much.

At the London gig in 2016 (or was it 2017) I was with my gf and after being row 10 for about an hour we bailed to the back of the GC. We had a blast there because we were still really close to the stage being in GC, but we had enough room to literally swing a tiger. Lots more folk seemed to be actually dancing back there too so it was a lot of fun :)
