AC/DC sighting in Vancouver gets longtime fan (me) drooling over prospect of Aussie earbusters' new LP

by Steve Newton on August 1st, 2018 at 4:24 PM

Just scored an interesting news tip from one of my rock 'n' roll sources on the street.

The guy tells me that he had a quick chat with a couple of members of AC/DC in downtown Vancouver this morning. One of the rockers that he talked to was Stevie Young, Angus Young's nephew, who took over the rhythm-guitar spot in AC/DC from Angus's brother Malcolm in 2014 when Mal started suffering from the health problems, including dementia, that he would succumb to last November.

I'd like to announce that the other rocker my source chatted with briefly today was Axl Rose, the Guns N' Roses frontman who took over the lead-vocals position from Brian Johnson on AC/DC's last tour when Johnson started suffering hearing problems.

I can't announce that, though, because the other rocker my source talked to was none other than, get this: Phil Rudd! Yes, Phil Rudd, the longtime AC/DC drummer who was himself replaced behind the kit by Chris "Thunderstruck" Slade in 2015 for the band's Rock or Bust World Tour. (In 2014 Rudd had been charged with various crimes, including "attempting to procure a murder", although that charge was quickly dropped.)

Maybe it's just a coincidence that Rudd and the younger Young were spotted today in the city where AC/DC recorded its last three albums. Maybe they just travelled over from Australia for a little vacay or something.

But it's also possible that they were laying down tracks for the next AC/DC album at the same location (Gastown's Warehouse Studio) with the same engineer-mixer (Langley's Mike Fraser) as the last three times.

All I know for sure is: I hope the new album is as good as Back in Black.
And I'd like a free vinyl copy, please.

I'd be very surprised if Rudd is back. In fact I'd be surprised if Rudd can get into Canada.

Angus Young - lead guitar

Stevie Young - rhythm guitar

Axl Rose - lead vocals

Mark Evans - bass guitar

Phil Rudd - drums

It would be awesome if he could recapture the voice he used 2 years ago. His current vocals will be torn to shit by AC/DC fans.

He will be using Shadow and Nightrain voice + propably vocal couch. Nothing to recapture, it's still there

And singing live is whole different thing than in studio

His ACDC rasp was not only Shadow and Nightrain rasp. It was a totally different (and bigger) monster. It was so powerful that you could think he was about to break his vocal chords. That power and rasp ain’t coming back unless he meets with his vocal couch again. But we also know that Axl in the studio is different because he doesn’t have to be moving and can also record sentences separatedly. He needs to work his ass like he did in early-mid 2016 if he wants to sound that strong again.

He will. But maybe not now. We'll see in Mexico.

It will be the same album as Rock or Bust or Black Ice. Similiar riffs, lyrics, solos but just with other vocalist. Axl fuckin Rose and this making me excited :headbang: First Axl's appearence in studio in many years

I think that this album will be a mixture of early Bon albums (Let There Be Rock, Powerage) and some of the Brian albums (Blow Up Your Video, The Razors Edge).

It depends if Angus want to use Axl as composer or let him come with some ideas. Then surely it will be similiar to what you're talking about. If not and Axl will be used just as a singer then I think it will be very similiar to BI and ROB.

We will see. It can be interesting album or very predictable album.

If this happens and AC/DC tours next year, could they manage stadiums again or would they have to look at playing arenas in most places?

Good question. Hard to predict. If they will do World Tour propably firstly they'll do arena shows and if selling will be good next legs will be at the stadiums.

I still feel sorry for Chris. But maybe it was his own decision to step back? Who knows.
