VPN recommendations

Recommended Posts

I've been downloading from torrents for years. Recently my ISP has been cutting me off for it. Is there a safe way to do this? Any recommendations for a good VPN? Are they free or should I pay? Advice on how to use one would be helpful also.

I use Nord VPN and it works really well. Offer on at the moment. $99 for a 3 year subscription.

All you need to do is install it, select your chosen server location and you're all good.

Hmm, that price seems kinda' high for a guy like me who likes to download stuff for free  Seems like it would be cheaper to Redbox a movie for 1.99 than to pay 100 dollars. lol.

Yeah but it's $99 for 3 years. That works out as less than $3 a month and it's totally worth it.

On Nord is it easy to switch IP on the fly - say to access US Netflix from a different country? And then switch back?

Really easy. You just bring up the server map and select your preferred country. Another cool feature it has is a kill switch where you can select programs to shut down automatically if your proxy connection is lost. Basically if your VPN drops out it will close any open browsers and torrent clients you identify in the settings menu.

Sorry to jump on the back of @31illusions post but does anyone know if I can access UK tv channels like bbc Iview, all4, etc from nordvpn? I've had vpns before, albeit free, and it never seems to work on certain things.

I didn't know you could do that? As this is new to me, I've read free VPN's don't work as well as the paid ones, possible malware, ads and such. I'm still debating on what to do.

Most countries tv sites only let you watch the programs if you're based in the country. So if you're running through a server in that country they think you're actually there and allow you to watch it. I think Netflix are the most active at trying to block VPN servers. As I'm in Australia I can download torrents with no problems but I would pay to be able to watch Match of the day on bbc every week as well as all the other quality programming. $2.75  a month seems very reasonable, I think I'll get this in the next few days, will let you know if it works if you're interested in viewing British tv!

I use Nord in the UK and it works fine for US Netflix and all the other foreign streaming sites. Bizarrely it does have a problem viewing BBC iPlayer if I connect to a UK based server.

Thanks for letting me know,  Nord has a 30 day trial so I'll give it a shot and see if I can get it to work, bbc is the one player I could never get to work with vpns and it's really the one I want.

I'm pretty sure that when an ISP is cutting you it is because your using a lot of bandwidth and by using a VPN your not gonna solve that. I mean the bandwidth usage doesn't stop, it's only harder to find out who's behind the ip address, making it very useful for uploading illegal files. Your own ISP won't have much trouble finding out it's you who's behind it and it's more for external parties to see who's uploading their content.

I have been seeing into VPNs lately to get one for me but there are some questions I still can't answer and maybe you can help me out - how do you guys know that a VPN is so safe after all? Doesn't it actually work as a big key logger? You pay somebody to be the middle man between you and the internet, and you pay somebody to screen all the stuff you do online and collect all the typing you do, the e-mails (if  you still use 'em) etc etc, and you trust 'em with it?

What do you want the VPN for?

I use it because here in the UK things are getting closed down pretty quick.

IPTV is being throttled and or blocked by the big ISP's

Torrents are being tracked like a bastard and shitty letters sent.

And are Netflix catalog is wank compared to USA.

VPN will slow your speeds down however depending on what you need it to do it is the only choice.
