PS4 vs Xbone

Birthday coming up. Don’t know which to get. Xbox has the features such as backwards compatibility with OG and 360 which make me drool, but PS4 has Spidey and will be getting Shenmue III which I eventually want to play after I beat the first two. Anyone have any opinion that could help me out here?

It comes down to two things, in my book.

  1. What do your friends have?
  2. Which system has the better games?

I was a big Xbox 360 fan but I sort of jumped ship to PS3 towards the end of the last console generation.

PS4 has The Last of Us II and Uncharted 4 and developer precedence in many cases. I'm going with that.

The only Microsoft exclusive that really intrigued me was Sunset Overdrive.

So it's your choice.

This, imo what your friends use would trump exclusive titles, but that is only if you game online with friends to begin with.

I might add button layout in the mix, what controller do you prefer?

If you are asking because you are afraid to buy "the wrong one" I don't think there is a wrong answer. Both systems are close enough that it's not like one will outlast the other or have "much better" games later etc.

I've stuck with XBox basically because I prefer the controller and I don't play online so it doesn't matter to me what anybody else owns.

PS4 does seem to have the stronger exclusives this gen but I've only just got around to playing Last of Us on the PS3 so I'm in no rush to play the sequel just yet.

The one and only reason I chose PS4 over Xbox was because a ton of my friends were playing Destiny at the time. In the time since I bought my PS4, pretty much everyone I know that was playing Destiny (for obvious reasons we don't need to get into here) so now I basically just play whatever is out there by myself.

I upgraded to a PS4 Pro not long ago but that was due to a large payout from a casino lol. I just stuck with PS4 Pro over Xbox One X due to already having titles on PlayStation.

Also, you’ll soon be able to play the entire Yakuza series on PS4 (3-5 are being ported from PS3 to PS4). They’re different enough from Shenmue and Sleeping Dogs that I would recommend them, or at least Yakuza 0 (only one I’ve played so far as it’s the only one on Steam).

My friends aren’t gamers so that doesn’t dictate anything for me. After reading this thread, I think I’m leaning towards PS4. The games and reasons listed by you guys are swaying me in that direction

If you can afford it, I would go for the Pro as I've heard the framerate of games like Yakuza and The Last Guardian are not so great on the base PS4.

Been thinking about splurging for a Pro. Potentially would try to get a pre owned one at that point or a bundled deal to get some kind of savings at that point. Then again...I don’t own a 4K Tv. So how much would I truly benefit besides frame rates and other little perks?

It depends on what kind of games you want to play. I would google the titles you are looking at + Pro mode to see what benefits you get. I know if I were to get a PS4 I would want a Pro as I've heard The Last Guardian (one of the exclusives I would want to play) has a poor frame rate on the base model, while it maintains a pretty steady 30fps on the Pro (at 1080p).

It sorta depends on your budget and games you like imo. I honestly feel the Switch is the best console of this generation (but that's off topic).

As for Xbox vs PS, I have been researching it myself, and here is what I've learned.

1. The SINGLE best/most powerful console on the market IS the Xbox One X (dont let PS fanboys delude you, lots of videos have been made about this topic). But you ALSO have to pay for this power, so you probably need a 4K TV to really appreciate all that power as well.

2. PS4 Pro. As others have said, the games ARE a selling point, if those exclusives interest you. It's also a very powerful console.

3. Xbox One S. This is the best "budget" system out there imo. If you want a new system, to play all the new multiport games, this is the way to go. Also, Microsoft REALLY is doing a good job with backwards compatibility, so most of your 360 games will work, as well as nice selection of OG Xbox games.

4. Regular PS4 or regular Xbox one. You are probably a little silly to buy either one of these at this point imo.

A plus point for both the Xbox One S and the One X is that they come with 4K Blu-Ray support. I was almost thinking of getting a PS4 Pro despite having a PC as I thought it'd come with 4K Blu-Ray support; maddening to think that Microsoft's budget console can fork out for it but Sony can't for their Pro model.

For those looking to upgrade to the Xbox One X in Canada, the $299 trade-in promotion at EB Games starts up again tomorrow (October 12th).  Trade in any working Xbox One, PS4, Switch and get an Xbox One X for $299 (plus tax).  Tried to do this last time in August but the stores sold out in a few days.

With RDR 2 just around the corner, great time to upgrade to an X or a PS4 Pro.

I finally decided to switch over to Xbox One X. All of my co-workers and friends have that system, so it'll give me a lot more options to play online with others. It won't be delivered til Friday but I'm excited about it. It'll also help me slim down the entertainment options currently hooked up to my TV. I can get rid of the Roku Ultra and 4K blu-ray player at the very least as the same funtionality will be built into the Xbox.

Welcome to the club.  RDR2 is a visual onslaught on the X.

Xbox just arrived. It takes 2 hours to factory reset a PS4 but I started the process at least. Really hoping to get everything changed over by the end of the day but it's looking like I may not be ready to rock until tomorrow.

Yeah, it took awhile when I got my X to get things rolling.  I get why they can't update every console going out the factory but it's a tad anticlimactic to get a new video game console and then have to wait for hours to play it.

Are there any PS4 games that you have already played that you plan on playing again on the X?  I'm curious how much of a graphical bump you notice when comparing the two.  I've heard the difference with RDR2 is quite noticeable.
