Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile - with James Hetfield

Hetfield is in it for like 2 minutes, tops.

It's too bad that this project settled for Zac Efron instead of a real actor who could get under the skin of Bundy. But, all that seems to be required to play Bundy is blue eyes and a supermodel face - I don't think they've ever got his casting right in the various movies and TV specials. He was a creepy dude with eyes that were beady and powerful; his eyes gave away the evil inside him.

I also don't like the tone that this trailer seems to be going for: it's the same, quasi-comedy, David O. Russell thing that a lot of crime related films have done recently. A lot like I, Tonya. It should be serious and grim.

And please...the abs...is this the Matthew McConaughey tradition of sneaking the abs into every movie? Bundy didn't have abs. If he did, he probably would have felt a lot better about himself and wouldn't have killed women.

I heard an interview with the director. He seemed a bit uncomfortable with the fuzzy reality thats produced when film trailers (sensational by nature) meet social media commentary (sensational by nature).

He said what motivates him most is unmasking the fact that systems such as patriarchy and white hegemony have given cover to monsters like Bundy - that people need to earn your trust individually, not by community stature. And generally speaking that resonates with me. Because I get driven up the wall with the 'youd never think a good looking professional would be a murderer' talking point. Thats exactly one of the types I figure would be a murderer, personally! lol

He said that though the USA represents 5% of the Worlds population, it has over 65% of the serial killers since stats were kept. Seemed like he thought that Americans need to ask themselves "why?" and that the US audience responds far better to entertainment to ask these questions of themselves.

After watching The Bundy Tapes I realized that he wasn't as intelligent as he is made out to be. He got lucky many times, even when he was still in Washington the police already had him as a suspect but because of the times and flaws in the system, he managed to get away with it. He did have a certain charm of course, even the judge seemed to be almost apologetic when he sentenced him to death.

Its not even so much lucky as the system of dealing with these motherfuckers weren't so evolved, they kinda made their bones over people like Bundy.  None of these guys are fucking geniuses, Bundy was manipulative sure but not any more manipulative than any number of people, he was just using it to certain ends.  The truth is he had some semblence of education and was obssessed with talking about himself on those Bundy tapes, it was just him prevaricating and avoiding certain key points because he knew that he was in a position of power with those talking to him because he had what they wanted i.e. information so they didn't want to ruffle his feathers in case he clammed up...but he just used that shit to sound off about himself, textbook psychopath really, vain, self obssessed, high opinion of himself and his own intellect etc.

Also is a way to sell newspapers, thats where a lot of the 'he's so intelligent' thing came from...but lets face it the guy never saw anything through that he did academically, there's nothing substantial to suggest a higher than average intellect, nothing whatsoever, it just makes for a good bogeyman, 'the boy next door killer' and all those wonderful quotables like 'he was one of us', it makes him all the more scary and the papers just fly off the shelves and we end up 35 years down the line talking about this shit like it was some kind of a fact before now but you're spot on right, he ain't that fuckin' intelligent, he just has some semblence of an education and spoke reasonably well, which is a contrast to a lot of other killers and such like.

Quite frankly, and this is the most damning indictment of him in terms of his intelligence...he could've gotten away with that shit but he didn't cuz he was so fuckin' stupid that he fucked up his own defence.  Charlie Manson was the same, the evidence against him was flimsy but when you try and stab the judge with a pencil then the defence counsel are kinda pissing in the wind after that

Exactly, that's what I meant. He didn't even use a different name when he approached women, that's how the police found out his first name rather fast. When he got arrested in Florida it took them ages to find out that the ''mystery man'' without an ID was actually Ted Bundy who had escaped jail two times. That would be incomprehensible now, but I guess back in the 70s that could happen.

He didn't even get into the law school that he wanted because of his grades. The reason why people are still fascinated is because he managed to kill so many young women, escaped jail not once but two times, and he seemed rather normal at first impression, and like you said, he spoke rather eloquently. The fact that he defended himself in court and started interrogating the witnesses like some hotshot lawyer was disturbing and comical at the same time. I doubt that had ever happened before.

Yeah. I was watching the documentary "Abducted In Plain Sight" on Netflix. Its about a kidnapping in the USA in the 1970's. I got so angry with the peoples stupidity that I had to stop watching it! First the parents waited 5 days to call authorities because the child was last seen with a family friend . Both parents had sexual encounters with the abductor, before the event. And then what really got me yelling at the screen was that the retired FBI Officer who lead the investigation gave a current day interview where he said somethng like 'The FBI Academy trained us in "stranger danger" but I had no concept of what a pedophile was.' Stranger danger is what some adults teach to toddlers. Its crazy to think this wasnt long ago that the FBI was training to a toddler level.

these fucking wankers all have delusions of grandeur about their own fuckin' intelligence.  Take Dennis Rader, the BTK killer, kills people in the 70s and 80s and gets away with it due to the authorities being not as well versed in this shit as they would later become...he suddenly stops murdering then in 2000 and something gets a hankering to start communicating with the coppers again, taunting him and such, ends up sending them a floppy disk with some shit on it, they go file, properties, says the shits registered to his church, bang, caught, thats how much of a genius that dickhead was

It really is crazy... the 70's don't feel like that long ago (I wasn't even born yet, but still...) but technology has changed so much since then. In Bundy's case... I believe that he was already on the FBI's most wanted list, then he got his picture in the newspaper in Florida as ''mystery man without a valid ID'' because he was arrested for driving too slow if I'm not mistaken, and it still took them a long time to find out he was infamous fugitive Ted Bundy. Bizarre.

The time for roam-about-the-country mass killers like Ted Bundy has come and gone.

That's why they're even more fascinating in this day and age. Because technology has evolved to such a place that people are more or less always traceable and even if you pulled off the perfect murder, everybody has to be somewhere at any given time and if you were there, chances are there's some minutiae piece of evidence for it.

The killers that exist today are more terrorists than serial murderers. The type of go-down-in-flames mass shooters or drive a car into a crowd wackos who never try to get away. The Ted Bundy's of the world can only kill so few before the technology catches them. There's no hope for them to live a dual identity where they're sociable in everyday life and on the weekends, killing with impunity.

Ted Bundy hunted in his own backyard and was frequently spotted by people he knew, that's why he would use his real name when he approached girls. As much as he was wary about being caught, he was also worried about creating a character and then being recognized by somebody in the middle of it who would walk up to him and say, "Yo Ted! What's up? Hey what's with the crutches?" He couldn't be telling people his name was Leland or some shit. Too many people knew Bundy.

I have to dispute that last statement, it's well documented that Jack the Ripper had great abs.

The movie looks like it's treating this guy like a rock star.

Seen it on Sky a few days ago, but yes it does.

He comes across more as a TV anti hero, than a evil mass serial killer. I think it's misjudged. It's the wrong tone.

The film is fine, but it's nothing go out for your way for.

The trailer might make it all seem exciting. But the movie is boring and they don't glorify him in the slightest, imo. The movie depicts him as being an idiot - he was absolutely convinced that there was no way that the system would ever convict him; a handsome white professional man.

He was suave, handsome, confident, intelligent and sharp witted. He did have groupies. He did break out of jail twice. He was the first televised murder trial and he was able to rep himself. They cant ignore all that and still say its a movie about Ted Bundy. Outside of those realities the film is a slow moving procedural that does all it can to focus on his impact on others more then him.

My major complaint is that they didnt depict his public confession in a one-on-one interview the day of (before?) his execution where he talks about why he feels he was so damaged (violent porn). I guess the movie's not about him to that extent, even. Its about his partners experience. It based on her book after all.

That he was a well liked, perfected American and a horrifically brutal serial killer is a point well made imho. People shouldnt be well regarded because they are well paid. Or trusted because they are a professional. But thats how it goes, and this is what can result from that privilege. In this movie we hear from the women and girl left in the wake of that 'American Success Story' world view.

Bundy was tested and shown to have an IQ of 124 or some shit. Not hugely above average at all. Been blown out of proportion over the years - same with his looks.

There was research done a while back on serial killer IQ's and their average IQ was shown to be lower than that of the general population.

There are always exceptions of course like Ed Kemper, Jeffrey Dahmer, Rodney Alcala and the unabomber.

The Ted Bundy Tapes gave very little new information at all. Been able to find all that stuff on YouTube for years.

Anyone can be charming when they're trying to get what they want, its when someone puts it on em that you see what they are really like i.e. in court where he came off like an arrogant cunt or when he was in front of the press when that Florida dude paraded him around as he was getting nicked.  The truth he is looked average, which was part of why he was so good at what he did, average height, average hair colour, average looks, if he was fuckin' stunningly good looking he'd be a lot more noticeable.

More bullshit, he was just copping that Christian plea, manipulating, passing the blame off on shit.  The truth is, with these psychos, they do it cuz they like it, simple as that.  As for why they like it, I don't think they are any the wiser about that stuff, they are far to arrogant and self involved to be able to work something like that out.

I just wanted to see the scene since its like, the end of the story. Dont mean I believe him! I think for the reasons that you say, it actually adds to the story. These exchanges of power between white men, archetypal transactional relationships. And within my analysis that I put forward, the televangelist giving him a platform is the perfect end to the tale of 'patriarchy as cover.'
