“Get in the Ring” Schmoose leather jacket - help needed with info please

Hi all! Newb to this forum and joined as it seemed the best place for informed opinions. Apologies if this is the wrong area.

I’ve acquired a made in USA Schmoose leather jacket with non bleeding bullet embroided back patch with Guns n’ Roses, Get in the Ring, World Tour over the right breast in red thread. Despite extensive searching I’ve only ever previously seen the black denim “get in the ring” tour jackets, allegedely crew only items. I have seen very similar Scmoose jackets for Metallica and Megadeth, but not G n R.

Has anyone seen one before or know whether they were general merch items or if they are crew (or even band items only - there are pics of megadeth wearing theirs so I can dream!)

Any info or opinions gratefully received. I can probably post pics later today if that helps.

cheers Erswell

Thanks for the reply - much appreciated.

I was 16 when AFD came out and it was the cornerstone to pretty much all of our parties so its a great bit of memorabilia for an aging rocker like me! I just wish I could find out more about it (maybe a photo of Slash wearing one.....that’d be cool 😀) but as I said I’ve drawn a blank. Probably why I’m not a private detective!

I think it looks like something someone had customized themselves, but i'm no expert

I was older than you when AFD came out. Yay! for us aging rockers :headbang:

Whats swaying me more towards official is that Schmoose did make the same jackets for other metal bands of the era. It doesnt come out very well in the photos but the stitching and back patch are extremely high quality and very similar in position to the Megadeth and Metallica ones I’ve seen. All in all its a very well made heavy duty leather jacket (it weighs several pounds more than my battered old biker!)

Of course it doesnt rule out someone getting a Schmoose jacket and doing it themselves - a lot of superfans out there! Its a pity the company doesn't seem to exist anymore as I’d give them a call.

And aging rockers never die.....they just have to headbang more slowly. Whiplash is a thing 😳

What i mean is they paid a professional person to do the embroidered writing and attach the patch. Which would cost a bit as it's on leather.

Thanks very much - thats the same model Schmoose as the Megadeth jackets I’ve seen with side laces and a complete belt (minus the harley patch) whereas mine has flat sides and a belt that starts just back from the sides. A couple of the Metallica ones from 91-93 tour have the partial belt too but with laces. The Schmoose label on mine is also in the style of the Megadeth and Metallica jackets that were on Reverb with a steer crossed by an S plus phone and fax number, rather than a face with just phone.

The writing is exactly the same font/colour/position and the patch is identical with every vein on every leaf the same, thorns in same place, rose petals etc. If its a custom they’ve gone to extraordinary lengths.

The story behing mine was that it was given to the guy I got it from by a relative of the Australian leg of the tour management, at the end of the tour. He chose this one from a box of them as it was in the best condition and has had it in a cupboard ever since, hence its pristine condition. He’s not even vaguely intetested in music and wanted me to have it. I know all jackets have similar stories but I’ve known him for years and have no reason to doubt him as to how he came by it. He also vaguely remembers being told “that one was the singers” but its 26 years ago so he cant be sure. He’s not a Gunners fan - doesnt even know Axel’s name - so I don't think he was making it up for effect. I suspect it may easily have been “they were the bands” or “they were the crews.”

Now as to whether what he was told is true or remembered correctly - thats the question! I get the feeling that Schmoose might have made jackets in this vein with slight variations in model (laces/belt etc) that were supplied to the bands of the era and I’m hoping mine is one of these crew only jackets. And hence my asking for help from the experts here. Thanks to all who’ve helped so far and/or chatted and have a great weekend!

Were you able to find out anything? No worries if not - as above I appreciate the offer. I also realised I mispelt Schmooze in the title which dosent help! 😀

He said he only got 1 leather motorcycle style jacket his whole time with the band. It was like 1988, it had the Cross patch and his name sewn into it. He's not sure of the brand but said he will take a look and ill ask him for a pic also. He's sure this was the only swag like this the crew/backline got.

Thanks very much! I think I’ve seen a few of the cross patch ones - I presume from the AFD era - made by Brockum (some with crew name, some not.) There’s one for sale at the mo at Wyco Vintage that is identical in construction to mine  except for the AFD logo and being made (or distributed by) Brockum, rather than Schmooze. There’s also a few on the net with Franco labels (IIRC) with a Use Your Illusion logo.

I wonder if the actual jackets came from the same factory but went to different distributers who then labelled, embroided and patched them for different tours. It would explain why the same two or three variations of essentially the same jacket are floating around for several metal bands and for several of their tours. Interesting!

and again, thank you for your input.
