Gordon Comstock 3,686 Posted April 18 It's an early contender for Album Of The Year. Dr. Dre mixed it, and it was recorded around the same time as his last album Oxnard (released 5 months ago) but Anderson had more control over the production on Ventura, and... it's a lot better than his last album. His voice and drumming sound great. He got Andre 3000 and Nate Dogg on the record (thanks Dre!) and all the other features fit seamlessly. It's a 'return' to his best sound (Malibu) but it's an improvement, this album is smooth as fuck, catchy, it's a great 'summertime' record. I know most people on a rock forum might not be into this, but for those that are:
highvoltage 2,633 Posted April 18 I have been waiting for this! I really liked Oxnard, but I'm a bigger fan of his soulful stuff than the hip-hop. I absolutely LOVE Malibu, listened to it almost every day for a good 6 months at one point.
Zeppelin 755 Posted April 18 Love it. A lot of the tracks are just buttery smooth and I was glad to hear a little bit of that Bubblin flavour at the end of Winners Circle. Just a smooth as fuck, 40-minute, summer vibes album, which is perfect coming from .Paak. And I really enjoyed Oxnard. But this just seems more concise and flavourful.
Gordon Comstock 3,686 Posted April 18 Oxnard was cool for what it was, but this is what I was hoping for when he first started working with Dre. 'Reachin 2 Much' and 'Jet Black' have kind of a Venice vibe to them, but they're a level above that record, they're like the culmination of everything he's done since then. There's echoes of Malibu throughout the album too but again, he's on another level right now. Can't wait to see what these songs are like in a live setting, that's where .Paak really shines.
andrew032302 76 Posted April 22 (edited) Never thought we’d talk about Andy here. Being honest, I enjoy this album more than Oxnard. This one is a lot smoother, a lot more laid back, and some great music to study/relax to. Speculation says he’s playing ACL Fest this year so I can’t wait to see him there. Gordon Comstock 3,686 Posted May 8 This track came out today, it's pretty cool. One of his better features, I think:
