USA almost attacked Iran

Apparently, the Pentagon was urging for retaliation after Iran allegedly shot down a US drone over international waters. So Pentagon seems to be the problem here, urging for overblown escalation of a tense situation. We don't need escalation. Escalation leads to war. Over a drone. Which might have been over Iranian territory.

Still if there is a war or something pretty close to it. Trump is going to be blamed. He is the Comander in Chief. The Pentagon can't act on their own. Americans don't want a war nor any kind of international conflict. Having said that if Trump and The Pentagon want a war. Well, that's Congress job

Trump handles war like he's picking out a film at Blockbusters like 'that one...nah, actually, fuck that one'.

Just a reminder for some here. We'd be following the US if this happened. It'd be the USA with it's allies the peace living Saudi's, Israel and Tory Britian. Hunt was talking up the prospect just days ago. Yet someone the Tory leadership race was further up the headlines.

I think it's outrageous that we're in danger of being dragged into another war by team America, just over a decade since Iraq. One that'd be many times more costly likely.

Don't think shooting that boat helped either

Worth pointing out that although the Iranians probably were responsible, that isn't the conclusion the French, Germans, Japanese ect. drew. The EU wanted more proof. The UK's stance was just that there's no reason to doubt the Americans.

Actually even some of the us news channels here in the UK had people questioning why, the US was flying a millitary drone where it was even if it wasn't in Iran airspace and if it was then they'd be within their rights.

It was likely an attempt to bait them and it worked.

Not trying to defend Iran here, but I remember very vividly how Iraq played out and that was under governments less prone to hyperbole and mcarthyism (bush and blair).

There support for global terrorism might be a starting point.

Who's to say that next time it isn't a drone they shoot down.

When's the last terrorist attack where they hit the US? Why is Iran more of a problem for the US than Saudi Arabia?

I'm actually surprised Iran hasn't attacked the US. Look at what the US has done to Iran over the years. Overthrew their government twice. Crushing sanctions. The US even shot down a civilian Iranian airliner in the 80's!

I'm also not saying a conflict wouldn't hurt innocent people I don't condone a war in any sense.

But who is Iran hitting, let's get specific.

Y'know what I don't get about Trump?  You could forgive an under-informed younger generation for perhaps not knowing who this guy is or what he's about but for anyone who was concious during the 90s and 80s etc, Trump was just a known crook.  He had all the integrity and all the reputation of someone like Don King.  Even if you're some outright right wing fuckin' racist (and this is not to say that makes up the bulk or even a significant portion of his voters btw) there are better people to enact right wing policy than Donald Trump.  His getting voted in just kinda corroborated my lifelong cynicism about politics.  I honestly never thought it'd happen, I thought it was a joke, I'm not even sure Trump thought it would happen or had a decent idea of what he wanted to do with a presidency...but it did.  There are a number of reasons why it actually came to pass politically speaking, especially when you're presented with a bunch of shit options but, fuck me, Donald Trump, Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino, that fuckin' guy?!  The fuckin' real estate shark, the gold tower guy, Jesus, could you pick anyone more vulgar?

Below from Wiki is an example.

Shi'ite Militias in Iraq[edit]

Iranian proxies killed an estimated 1,100 US troops in Iraq.[43] In addition, insurgents supported by Iran reportedly committed acts of terrorism.[37][44][45] The United States State Department states that weapons are smuggled into Iraq and used to arm Iran's allies among the Shiite militias, including those of the anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and his Mahdi army.[46]

During his address to the United States Congress on September 11, 2007, Commanding Officer for the United States forces in Iraq, General David Petraeus noted that the multinational forces in Iraq found that Iran's Quds force had provided training, equipment, funding, and direction to Shi'ite militia groups. “When we captured the leaders of these so-called special groups … and the deputy commander of a Lebanese Hezbollah department that was created to support their efforts in Iraq, we’ve learned a great deal about how Iran has, in fact, supported these elements and how those elements have carried out violent acts against our forces, Iraqi forces and innocent civilians.”[44]

In 2015, Michael Weiss and Michael Pregent accused the Popular Mobilization Units, an organization of 40 mainly-Shi'ite militias backed by Iran, of committing extensive atrocities against Sunni civilians in the course of their war against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, including "burning people alive in their houses, playing soccer with severed human heads, and ethnically cleansing and razing whole villages to the ground." Weiss and Pregent even suggested that "Iran's Shi'ite militias aren't a whole lot better than the Islamic State."[47]

Kenya[edit]

Aggrey Adoli, police chief in Kenya's coastal region, said on 22 June 2012 that two Iranians, Ahmad Abolfathi Mohammad and Sayed Mansour Mousavi, believed to members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards' Quds Force,[48] were arrested and suspected of being involved in terrorism. One of the Iranians led counter-terrorism officers to recover 15 kilograms of a powdery substance believed to be explosive.[49] The two Iranians allegedly admitted to plotting to attack United States, Israeli, Saudi, or British targets in Kenya.[48] In court, Police Sgt. Erick Opagal, an investigator with Kenya's Anti-Terrorism Police Unit, said that the two Iranians had shipped over 100 kilograms of powerful explosives into Kenya.[50]

It was later revealed that the targets included Gil Haskel, Israel's ambassador to Kenya. During a visit to Kenya in August, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon praised Kenya for its efforts in stopping Iranian terror threats against Israeli and Jewish targets. Uganda, Ethiopia, and Kenya all expressed concern with Ayalon regarding Iran's attempts to increase terror activity in Africa.[51]

Argentina[edit]

Main article: AMIA bombing

On 18 July 1994, there was an attack on the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA) building in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which killed 85 people and injured hundreds. It was Argentina's deadliest bombing ever. Argentina accused Tehran in 2006 of being behind the attacks, and indicted several senior Iranian officials, including Hashemi Rafsanjani and Ahmad Vahidi, as well as Hezbollah's Imad Mughniyah.

Thailand[edit]

Main article: 2012 Bangkok bombings

On 14 February 2012, a series of explosions occurred in Bangkok, Thailand. Thai authorities said that the bombings were a botched attempt by Iranian nationals to assassinate Israeli diplomats. Several Iranians were arrested and charged for the attacks, one of whom was badly injured.

France[edit]

In October 2018, France froze Iranian financial assets in response to an alleged bomb plot to be carried out against an opposition group at a rally in Paris. The plot was said to be against the National Council of Resistance of Iran, which styles itself as Iran’s government-in-exile.[52] Assadollah Assadi, an Iranian diplomat in the Vienna embassy, was arrested in Germany in connection with the alleged plot to blow up a meeting of Iranian dissidents in Paris in June.[53]

Denmark[edit]

In October 2018, Denmark said the Iranian government intelligence service had tried to carry out a plot to assassinate an Iranian Arab opposition figure on its soil.[54] The planned assassination was of an exiled leader of the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz (ASMLA). Sweden extradited a Norwegian national of Iranian background to Denmark in connection with the foiled plot against the ASMLA leader.[53]

Ah so they've never actually attacked the US homeland. Related to the US they only attack when the US sticks it's nose in the middle east. And they also attack Israel related targets a lot. I wonder if that's what all the over the top rhetoric in the US against Iran is really about *big think emoji*

So it's already to attack places and kill people as long as it isn't too close to home??

So if someone assaults my next door neighbor I just do what not get involved?

Just call the cops. Depending on where you live they might even show up.

Trump's acting on decades of history with smaller incidents and tough talking from Iran - yet targeted attacks on Iranian territories is taking it too far. It is at times like these one must do everything to not escalate a volatile situation.

But wait a minute. What about the crimes of Saudi Arabia and Israel? Why is Iran always first on the hit list and not them?

Trump said he was ready to attack but after hearing that it would likely result in about 150 Iranians dying he called off the attacks, saying it wasn't in proportion to what Iran had (allegedly) done to them by shooting down the drone.

This must the only good thing I can remember Trump having done. Maybe it even was just a feint from him, all planned out as a threat? No, he's not that smart. Still, very happy he realized the planned attacks would be out of proportion.

Israel gets a free pass, because of the Bible. The Saudi's because they're a good source of income for the west and because the countries they commit warcrimes in tend to be countries the US wants bombed anyway.

Isn't that it?

I mean the right wing argument for arm sales is always, if we (the UK) don't sell them bombs to drop... someone else will

Honestly think we should't be selling arms to anyone.

I would say that Israel gets a free pass because there is a tremendously strong lobby on the US Government that comes down hard on any politician that goes against the Zionist agenda. Even Democrats are afraid of being against that agenda, even though the evangelicals mostly vote Republican. That's the lobby at work.

Regarding it just being arms sales regarding Saudi Arabia. We could also sell arms to Iran, why not do that? Again, this goes back to Iran being an enemy of Israel and Saudi Arabia being allied to Israel.

Imagine if Iran flew a Drone 21 miles from our land. Americans we have freaked out and shot it down too. Thinking it could have been a bomb! To me it was to close to their territory.
