The Irishman

I don't know what it is, maybe I expected far too much from the technology, but I expected these dudes to look like young men, not old guys with no wrinkles.

I'd heard so much about this "revolutionary" technology that was going to de-age Pacino and De Niro...I guess I expected a miracle, because they look like they just shaved a decade off them.

As to how good this movie will be, I'm sure it will be amazing, but the trailer is kinda ho-hum. This isn't the kind of extravagant, throw-it-in-the-blender mob movie that Goodfellas and Casino were. This looks like it is serious and dour.

I heard Jamie Foxx recently say that Scorsese was still interested in doing the Mike Tyson biopic with Jamie, but wanted to see how successful the "youth technology" is, as it is going to be the basis they make Jamie look like an early twenties Mike Tyson.

This looks amazing. De Niro and Pacino is always a great combination.

Are they really though?  i think its a fallacy that two great actors necessarily make for a great combination, those two are a good illustration of that, unless you were saying just having two great actors in the film as opposed to any kind of interplay.  They've made, what, Heat, Righteous Kill?

Excited as fuck for the film though, looks good!

How the fuck is that Texan chipmunk gonna play Mike Tyson?

I loved Heat! Big fan of their work from the 80’s and some beyond. I see what you’re saying though, I could’ve worded it better - chuck those two into something with a good enough script and you’re winning.

They’re going to gas him up with juice, feed him like a horse and put a bunch of digital dots on his face. At least, that’s the hope. Jamie doesn’t get younger every year the movie isn’t made but they think the technology gets better.

In all sincerity, Jamie has been doing the Mike character since the beginning of his career when he was just a comic. He’s got the dramatic stuff down now and I don’t doubt he can do Mike better than any other marquee name. At least as good as Smith did Ali.

One thing is for sure, only Robin Givens can play Robin Givens. I bet she’d do it in a fucking second, too.

I'm suspicious of this CGI shit.  I mean fuck it, if we're doing that just go the whole hog and make a fuckin' cartoon Mike Tyson.  I don't think Mike needs a biopic.  I think the ones who need a biopic are the ones  who like...y'know, there's perhaps a lack of actual footage out there but there's a wealth of shit on Mike.

They've already made a cartoon Mike Tyson. 😄  Have you seen Mike Tyson Mysteries on Cartoon Network?  Some seriously hilarious stuff.

Nah I never seen that shit but I do remember the idea and thinking it was pretty cool, like the Muhammad Ali cartoon or an A Team cartoon (which i think there was but I might be imagining it), I can see how that shit would work!

My favourite episode is Mike Tyson and the Mystery of the Indianapolis Hotel Room. It's the finale of Season 1. Season 2 didn't air for another 3 years.

I actually went onto youtube after my man up there mentioned it and watched 5 mins before work, it actually looks pretty good   Like actually funny and not what I thought it'd be, which was like Scooby Doo only with Mike Tyson instead of a dog thats more pussy than hound.

Watched this over two nights (don't have time to sit through a three hour movie in one go).

Loved it.

Pesci was fantastic, probably the best performance of the movie.  It's a shame he's been in retirement; he was unreal in this.

Will have to watch this a few times to decipher everything that's going on.  It's equal parts Goodfellas/Casio along with Scorcese's more contemplative and introspective films like The Last Temptation of Chris and Silence.

When I first watched the trailer I was fascinated about Pesci too. But when I watched the whole movie I watched it synchronized in german. The german dude couldn't do Pesci justice.

Maybe I watch the original version too.

The whole movie moves pretty briskly - up until the point where Hoffa is whacked, then it slows to a crawl. It's like the film has two paces and once it goes into funeral mode, you're kind of just waiting for it to wrap itself up.

Overall it was great. Some characters didn't completely work for me and the de-aging stuff was mostly a bag of air - I couldn't tell that these guys were supposed to be young. It was very marginal in its success.

As far as the historical perspective - I kind of prefer Jack Nicholson's portrayal of Jimmy Hoffa in Danny Devito's 1992 movie about the man. Al Pacino was good but he didn't deviate from the Al Pacino persona - I feel that as much as Nicholson like's to lean into his own persona, he did Hoffa much more convincingly.

But you like Once Upon A Time In Hollywood more, right? 😄

They both have Pacino in common.

That turd lasts 2 hours 40 mins and it was so boring I had to split it into three chunks to watch it all; I also kept doing other things, like faffing on with my phone, making endless cups of tea and clipping my toenails. The Irishman lasts 3 hours 30 mins and I couldn't keep my eyes off it. But then Scorsese is a different class entire from Tarantino.

I liked Joe Pesci in this, it's a shame he was mostly inactive for a long time. Still got it. Also this was the first De Niro movie in years where he actually gave a fuck imo. Pacino was great, casting was cool. Some of the prosthetic makeup was truly awful though. De Niro's blue contacts were ridiculous and when someone called him a kid early in the movie when he looked like a 50 year old man was funny.

Also: I can't believe "Faffing" is an actual word.

Scorsese very much to his vintage style of Fellini-esque baroque camera movements, slow-motion, voice overs and a stunning soundtrack which seems to encapsulate that entire era. It is full of, what we could call now I suppose although they're all historic characters, ''Scorsese types'': ''Fat Tony'' Salerno,''Sally Bug'' Briguglio, ''Crazy'' Joe Gallo. Scorsese weaves his camera around like a magician. And the cast is ''Scorsese royalty'' - Keitel with a brief role there (must have found the time from flogging car insurance in the United Kingdom); with the greatest respect to DiCaprio who is a fine actor, move over, the big boys are back.

Great film. Tempted to call it a masterpiece but I will have to see it again.
