2018 CD Leaks Discussion Thread **NO LINKS, NO ASKING / HINTING FOR LEAKS**

CD is definately NOT the result of one professional hiding in the studio...

It's the result of one professional sitting at home going through whatever dozens of musicians, producers and some mysterious guy with a Bucket on his head sitting in a custom built chicken coop watching porn came up with, after years of recording in multiple studio's.

The number of professionals who have worked on music for CD is crazy.

Art cannot be forced... it has to flow naturally. That's why one person with only a guitar can perform his own song and blow everyone away, while others have a band with 10 people on stage and still sound like a mess.

Dude, it was a joke.

So, most of these big guns so far are in the Queen/Beatles mold, ala TWAT & Catcher.  Based on what I'm hearing (and taking into account that these are obviously unfinished), I'd say the correct selections were made for CD.  There's no way to tell, of course, how they would've ended up, as one great solo or part, along with a decent mix/master, could've elevated any one of these onto a higher level.

Speaking of which, I know I'm a little biased, but, another batch of leaks, and, once again, yet more proof that Buckethead was the perfect magic touch needed to take these songs at least a little bit closer to where they needed to be.

Love or hate the gimmick, his future additions to these tracks are, I think, undeniable, at this point.  I liken it to when Zappa used Adrien Belew & Steve Vai as what he would affectionately call, "Stunt Guitarists."

Axl definitely had this in mind for Buckethead's role in the band, and, I think it worked wonders.

These leaks are fine, some sturdy song structures and good ideas here, but they lack a bit of sparkle.  Hope to hear some more post-99 Bucket-era leaks from his tenure at some point .

EDIT: As an aside, with some work, I think Hard School/Checkmate/Jackie Chan could make a decent return single for the current line-up.

The only songs of these leaks that have some kind of rock n roll feeling are Hard School and Going down.

I wonder if Axl is still into stuff like State of grace or Silkworms. I hope not. :D

I do. Out of these leaks, Hard School is the one I like the least. I hope there is more stuff like Silkworms and Oh My God out there.

I thought State of Grace had great potential as a song with a slightly different sound. I wouldn’t put it in the same category as Silkworms though, I hope that song died a death many years ago. If they released that now it would sound 20 years out of date on day 1 which would hardly be a good start to “new” material.

With all these leaks coming out, do we know which, including last year’s, has the most recent Axl studio vocals minus Rock the Rock? Is it the TIL Remix? Going Down that was leaked in 2013? Or do we just not know. I’ve been really curious about this for a while.

To me, TIL is the only one that sounds notably different to most of Axl's other CD-era vocal takes. I feel any deciphering beyond that is just speculation. Goin' down is hard to judge with the mix and the fact that Axl only does bits, but it sounds fairly high pitched/not raspy.

We don’t really know. My guess would be the TIL remix, which I would put around 2009 or 2010 if I had to guess. As @Amir pointed I think earlier in this thread, with all of this late 90’s/early 00’s stuff that’s leaking, that we’re seeing pics of, etc. it seems clear that TIL was not a given to be on CD for a while and it likely became part of the track list pretty late in the game. Nothing from the early CD era actually supports the fact that it was in consideration for the album, as such I think it’s unlikely the vocals for the remix were recorded before the album was released.

Scraped is very underrated. Riad is a weak track with a lot of potential shown by the 1999 leak, but got ruined along the way.

I started listening Scraped again after the new leaks. Like Rhiad, I'm sure it got ruined by all the remixes.

Scraped is great but i hate that they left that Axl mistake in on the 2nd verse. They worked on this album for more than a decade & they couldn't re-record that part?

That’s the only real problem I have with the song too. How the fuck did ANYONE listen to that and say “yup, that’s it!”? Also wish it had the live intro, but that doesn’t ruin the song necessarily. Otherwise I think it’s a solid song with good attitude.

Scrapped has Axl's best vocal production ... The "ayo's" are recorded with 3 different voices (high, mid, low) and then there may even be more ... It's a ridiculous song in terms of production ... But the music is also super kickass and chords sound very AFD ... Will never understand why the song gets the hate it does ...

Been a while since I listened to Scraped but, aren't there noticeable clips and obvious copy/paste sections? I mean I like the ideas in Scraped, the dual-chorus thing at the end is alright, the bipolar feeling of the verses is cool but production wise that song is a mess...

Not sure exactly what you mean but I think it's pretty fucking cool how he has multiple voices singing the same part at once, that's what I meant by "production"

In regard to the TIL remix vocals, during the chats Axl said he initially wrote TIL to a hiphop beat, which is essentially what the remix is. Bc of that I’ve always wondered if those vocals actually predate the album version.

I think he said he wrote just the chorus to a hiphop beat but I'm not 100% sure on that. But there definitely could be an alt. version of TIL, there's plenty of versions of the other songs

They sound more recent than the CD vocals though, they're more like his live voice between 2006-2010 and especially his features on Angel Down. I would guess that TIL is one of the songs he re-recorded vocals for in 2006-2007 and it's entirely possible he did the album version and remix at the same time. I would guess they're from 2009-2010 though, whenever they were seriously considering a remix album.

It’s not a good song. The lyrics are ridiculous. I still cannot understand why scraped and Riad made the album. With that many songs in the can these are really B sides that you could stick on EP somewhere.  Can you imagine how much better CD would have been with a finished Hard School and State of Grace in those two slots......🤤
