First ever GnR song that you heard?

Recommended Posts

Think there may have been a few of these kind of threads before.... 🤔 but here goes me.

I remember seeing/hearing PC and SCOM on tv/radio in 1989 or so, but I was too hooked on Dire Straits and Queen back then (I was 9 yo) to really appreciate what was going on (although shirts and all sorts of gadgets were already circulating in Italy as well, I always thought what a strange name for a band 😂)... until I saw YCBM with Arnold. Immediate new heroes. 🥳

1988, when I had started to listen to music more "seriously." I think I heard SCOM first, on a radio show that played the new entries in the US and UK charts. I wasn't impressed, though, before I saw the WTTJ video (I don't remember if I saw the SCOM video before the WTTJ one) and then PC.

Mr. Brownstone when I was maybe 8 or 9, in my sister's room.  She was playing it for her friend and they turned it down because of "motherfucker" and I said "what's motherfucker?" and they were like "SHHHH don't ever say that!"  I didn't care much about any music except soft piano music until I was about 17, and I went to a friend's house and he had Guns playing and I was like "oh yeah, isn't this guy crazy as shit?  Like does drugs and beats his girlfriends and stuff?" And he was like "yeah but the music is good."  I still didn't take notice, but he played it over and over and I couldn't get "Patience" out of my head, and that's when I realized that Paradise City was from the same band, and I remembered hearing Brownstone back in the day, and I thought they must have two singers...anyway, from there I did my research online, found out Axl might be crazy but he wasn't a wasted drug abuser and the girlfriend beating stuff definitely had another side to it, and boom, a GNR fan was born.

not to mention the little sexual interlude near the end.

Who else skipped that song when it would reach that part, fearing that mom would otherwise think I was watching porn again?

Knockin' On Heaven's Door when I was about 6 or 7. It was the only song I knew from them until I randomly bought a Use Your Illusion II for my 13th birthday. I was also into Nirvana, Rolling Stones, Oasis and Marilyn Manson. In just a few days after purchasing UYI II I considered Guns N' Roses my favourite band. Civil War just blew me away. And it went from there.

Here we are 20 years later and GN'R are still untouchable at the very top. :)

When the first buggy downloadapps like Kazaa, (Emule?) and Limewire appeared my mom became all into hearing music she likes but never bought. So she let me download all kinds of stuff. She wanted me to download a Bob Dylan cover, which turned out to be Knockin' On Heaven's Door. That song got me into GN'R and now I can't stand hearing it.

The song, not their entire catalogue.

This was somewhere in the early 2000's. Imagine my disappointment when I found at that GN'R wasn't GN'R no more and Rock In Rio 2001 happened.

I probably heard Jungle, PC or SCOM before. But this is my first real memory of hearing GN'R.

Come to think of it, it's the song that got me into all the bands and artists I listen to today.

Paradise City was played here on the radio back in 1987 here in Minneapolis before it was officially released in January 1989. I heard it on the radio and loved the tune, then it wasn't played for a long time.

Jungle came out in October 1987 and that was the song you heard on the radio.

Paradise came back on the radio after its "official" release in January 1989.

Jungle.

Family trip to Cedar Point in Ohio. My brother always had cooler cassettes than I did but I wasn't allowed to touch them of course lol.

When he fell asleep, I went through his cassettes, found a super bad ass looking one (AFD) and started listening.

The moment I heard Jungle I was like "holy shit. This is a amazing"

I was living in Atlanta in an apartment near the airport in 1987 and 1988.  I heard JUNGLE for the first time while watching MTV with a friend that lived in another building.  Her boyfriend and my girlfriend didn't get it at all but the two of us were fucking hooked by the song and the look of these aliens.  Absolutely positively hooked.  I probably should have married that girl...

I do wish i was one of those people that seen the WTTJ video on MTV or something but unfortunately i wasn't. I heard WTTJ/SCOM/PC long before i became a fan, so i can't pinpoint when exactly. It was the solo on SCOM that caught my ear later on. I was mesmerized by how it was able to evoke emotions. When i took a deeper look i noticed Appetite had the 3 aforementioned songs and thought wow they were on their game  So i checked it out and after i heard Nightrain i was hooked.

Don´t Cry, then YCBM on MTV. They played them both constantly. I was 11. Then I can clearly remember there was the GNR weekend on MTV. I recorded everything that was Guns related from that era. From the Freddy Tribute to concert in Paris. Had it all on VHS. My biggest regret is that I couldn't see them live on tour, my parents wouldn't let me go to the concert in Vienna. I'm still pissed at them about it. And I tell them all the time.

I remember I first moved up to New England when I was 6, and while driving in the mountains Paradise City came on the radio. It’s become my all time favorite song since, but I remember looking through all my parents CD’s and always seeing AFD on the shelf and it always looked cool to me, and that is now my all time favorite album

1990 On a bus to soccer training I was 16, seen a lot of pictures of GNR and thought I would check them out by buying cassettes of Use your Illusion 1 & 2.

Played Illusion 2 first as it had the best review in a magazine.

First track Civil War......completely blown away!!

Hooked ever since then, there will never ever be another Guns N Rose's.

Still play all the songs most days now with Use your Illusion 1 my favourite ever masterpiece!

If only they can release something new soon?!
