With all due respect, coming from a guy who travels to the UK often for work and has many friends there, why do people like you feel the need to attack/trash/insult an entire country?  Yet, here you are, on a forum for a band from the USA (a rather drab band at this point, mind you), insulting all Americans.  I can confidently say you don't speak for all Brits, as the ones I know have a lot more common sense to not blindly throw insults like this around.  But I digress.

I, too, find these tributes to Kobe quite tacky.  All low-flying aircraft that day were grounded in LA due to the weather.  Someone made a foolish and selfish decision to fly... probably Kobe himself... and it cost him and 8 others their lives.   It's a tragedy, but tragedy's happen every day to common people all over the world, including 'classless' Americans, as you've so dubbed all of us.  They're all a shame, but tributes to the uber-privileged are just so tiresome.  We can agree there.

That aside, did you ever consider that Axl lives in LA and is a HUGE Lakers fan?  As is others in the band?  Kobe was known to be quite the stubborn arse, just like Axl, so they, I'm sure, connected on that level in a way we couldn't possibly understand.  If I could offer a bit of advice, if they want to pay a tribute to somebody they admired, whether you or I think it's tacky or not, let them do it and try not attack an entire populus of people from another country... on a forum for a band from that country.

Does anybody on here ever attack Brits for their obsession with a defunct monarchy?   Can I insult you because all that's all over the papers and news channels in your country is all about Harry and Meghan?  Two people that have absolutely no bearing on any of our lives.  Is it tacky when your country pays tribute to Princess Dianna at every turn, to this day?  Can we Americans call all Brits lifeless fools for the constant obsession over the royal family... the most uber-privileged group of people in the world that your hard earned money supports via taxation?

Will you be upset when Elizabeth kicks the bucket?  Will you be okay with the 'tacky' tributes to her when the time comes?

This is my first post ever on this forum, and probably the last (I like GNR and like to see photos and videos from their concerts... this forum seems to be a good place to find that stuff), but I just had to chime in when I read this comment.  It's incredibly insulting coming from someone in a country where it's people do the same types of things, and practically adore anything American.   A quick look at the 20 most popular websites visited by people in Britan in 2019 based on user traffic (https://www.lexiconnect.co.uk/top-20-uk-websites.html) finds that just about all of them have their home or origins in America (Google, Youtube, Facebook, etc.).  #16 on that list?  Pornhub.  That's classy.  American too!

So, what's really tacky here is someone from across the pond who feels the need to attack/insult an entire nation because he doesn't like some tribute to some American sports hero at some American band's concert, in America, on a forum for said American rock band.

As if his people never put their celebrities up on a pedestal as if they're some kind of Queen or King or Prince or something.   How silly would that be in the 21st century?

Pot, meet kettle.

I watched it up to Rocket Queen and enjoyed it.  Might be time to stop following the threads on this site. The band isn't perfect but it was a good show.. This was more like a one off show warm up show and was better than others like it in the past.  The tour isn't even for another month on a half.  They changed the order around a bit.. The dropped a couple covers. They added the slow version of You're Crazy for the first time in 27 years and did a damn fine job with it.  The last handful of shows played before this they brought in Locomotive and Dead Horse. Most of their peer hard rock bands don't change one song for a whole tour.

It is what it is at this point.. Take it or leave it because it isn't going to last forever.  These threads are like a morgue but I can tell you while watching it real time all you see is a constant stream of Facebook Hearts being clicked the entire stream.

Better was the only song played all night that I don't care for.  Looking at that setlist, I would have had a blast the whole night. I love those songs..

I am as outspoken as anyone but this place is definitely getting old

I understand what you are saying, but you have also openly stated that you don’t care for new music. Many of here follow because we want to hear new music, and people on the forum do anticipate a follow up of CD, or just want to hear what the current band could bring to a record. I think it’s fair to be disappointed considering the last record was almost 12 years ago, the show was included in the new chapter bullshit, and it would’ve been the perfect one off show to drop a new song at...

In Axl's case slowing down the tempo definitely wouldn't help. Axl's at his best in fast paced songs like SOYL. It's much easier for him to sing with rasp in quick bursts of screams instead of long dragged out singing. Nice Boys is a good example of this. He always sounds great, strong and raspy in Nice Boys EXCEPT when he had to sing it in a much slower pace when he sang it with Angry Anderson. He sounded like Mickey when he had to sing it in a slower pace, but he always sounds badass on that song when they do it in fast tempo.

Rocket Queen is a good example of a slower paced GNR song. Axl never sounds good on it.

Going out of breath is not really Axl's problem. He has just permanently lost a bit of his voice and there's nothing he or anyone else can do about it.

Not talking about slowing the tempo, I'm talking about rushing the beat. Two different things and a thing that definitely prevents singers from getting in the air they need to hit notes with power. Better for example is already a very tough song to sing, but if you shorten the breaks between words even more you're constantly on catch up. Even when Axl was considered shit in 2011 he didn't have this kind of trouble with the song. And that's because that line up of gnr played the songs with the correct pace and groove.

Now, firey Axl does come out when the tempo is up for out ta get me, shadow etc.. not saying that it doesn't seem to suit him, but they are fast songs written purposefully in that style... better is a mid paced rocker, different songs need different approaches.

Also, getting breathless is definitely an Axl problem. Listen to him on the end of some of the phrases of jungle, coma, estranged. He can't hold the notes and it sounds like he's pushing for air when he's already spent it.

People love to be disappointed. My GNR motto is always hope never expect.

It's far nicer to be pleasantly surprised a few times every decade than be disappointed at each and every show.

That being said, the animation for ISE and the outro of RQ are absolutely atrocious and there's no excuse for that in this day and age.

Listening to You're Crazy again now... Melissa's vocals and the slightly faster tempo (compared to 2012-14) are some nice changes. Sounds like Axl didn't really rehearse it but the end is pretty awesome. The drum intro is still weird though.

I will give you that they switched up the opening song but they still basically played the same songs every night. Different order or not...

It was ever so slightly different last night. I mean, the changes weren't made because they thought we should shake it up for the crowd. It was done because the songs didn't work on the old positions and should have been swapped around 3-4 nights (not years) in to the tour.

Anyway, I agree with you this is just lazy. They played You're crazy and if sounded like a cover band pulling it out of their arse on the fly.

This is crazy. You should expect a pro band to put on a pro show, when you pay pro show prices. End of.

A few times every decade?🤣 can your bar be any lower for what is acceptable?

I and other people voicing opinions don't love being disappointed! I'm not disappointed at all (by last night), because they did exactly what I expected them to do...

It is disappointing that they have chosen to squander the goodwill of an entire fanbase by beating us over the head with repetitive touring though. Yes, loads still enjoy on the day and loads still want to see them come to their countries every year with or without a new show.

Well trying to sing the ending of Coma makes anyone out of breath.

Not gonna argue about details though. My point was that in general fast paced songs suit Axl's voice better and in many cases he would sound much worse, if they performed the songs in a slower pace.

I think they put on a pro show. That's my opinion, you can have yours.

All the drama with people being done with the band for the umpteenth time (not saying you said that, I don't know if you did)

It's not about lowering my bar. I will follow GNR and the forum as long as I enjoy it. I would love new music, but I don't see the point in endlessly repeating the same complaints at every opportunity. (Even if they are legit.)

The clip of Crazy I saw sounded pretty good. No secret lower registers are Axl's strength these days but even the high parts had some good rasp coming through IMO. Sure the break wasn't as long this time but from what I've heard online they all sounded pretty solid for a first show.

Anyone who expected a new song to drop at this leg or any leg of this tour really should look at themselves in the mirror 😂

playing you’re crazy is cool though! I’d like to see them rip out a few oldies, that’s about the best we can realistically hope for imo

Any time I feel negative about the state of GNR, I put on a video of GNR in 2012 and as soon as I see DJ Ashba doing Hulk Hugan ears with a top hat and gold top Les Paul - I always end up thinking to myself "hey at least Slash and Duff are back still" and I always feel a bit better about GNR lol

That is how I look on the bright side. Was this show what we hoped? No.  But they did bust out YC with Slash and Duff for the first time since '93 so hey, I'll take it

@Tom-Ass FWIW, there are always little jokes about Brits having bad teeth etc, do I give a monkeys? No, it's called having a laugh.

@jonbradley As for the royals, I think you'll find most Americans are far more interested in that bunch of benefit-scrounging inbreds than your average Brit. It's not as if we all sit around the dinnertable of an evening and discuss Harry and Meghan or how much we miss Princess Diana.

Joke about the royals all you like, I don't care. Brits have a knack of being quite self-deprecating, it's not my fault @jonbradley seems incapable of laughing at himself.

Take it on the chin (or chins if you're American!).

At least you can say you saw Estranged performed live for the first time in 18 years.

EDIT: sorry, didn’t see that someone else already mentioned that!

GNR has performed Estranged many times before this show. I've seen them perform it with the other GNR and also with Slash and Duff. Love that song.

So how was the show?

Do you think GNR will have their own box at the Super Bowl?

Saw the footage on youtube.

The band sounded great. Axl was in great shape. The only problem was you could hear the fans singing along too.

Looked like fans were having a blast!

Here in the states if you didn’t know that more died, you’d think it was just Kobe.  Hardly even a mention of the 8 others.  There was another family who lost the mom, dad and daughter leaving an  orphaned sister behind.  This tragedy involved more that the Bryant’s.

Yeah they did flash a photo of all of them at the end, they were regular citizens who dont have a load of imagery that can be used in the same way.
