Promoter axes tour of Axl's band But rocker wasn't only one blamed for melee By JONATHAN TAKIFF takiffj@phillynews.com Major rock 'n' roll screw-up Axl Rose won't be causing any more riots for a while. Yesterday, Interscope Records announced a cancellation of the U.S. tour for Rose's revamped Guns N' Roses, the first shows he'd attempted in almost a decade. Still, this news didn't quiet the anger of Philadelphia concertgoers, who flooded newspapers and radio stations with communiques yesterday concerning the 11th-hour (literally) cancellation of the Guns N' Roses show Friday night at the First Union Center. In the melee that followed, bar stools and TV sets were thrown out of luxury boxes, guards tussled with spectators and five people wound up in the hospital with minor injuries, though there were no arrests. "Clearly, there were a lot of people at fault - the concert promoters for not clearing the house earlier, the facility for trying to whitewash that there were no problems, the fans for getting out of hand and especially Axl for not showing," said WMMR's Pierre Robert. "People knew from 9 p.m. that he wasn't there, and the chances were dim that he was going on." According to WPLY's (100.3- FM) Matt Cord, a friend of band member Tommy Stinson, the rest of the band was back at its hotel by 10:30 p.m., though the audience wasn't informed of Axl's "illness" until after 11 p.m. To its credit, the First Union Center did stop the sale of alcoholic beverages about 9:15 p.m., so as not to pile more fuel on the fire of the highly agitated crowd. We also hear that extra police were called in at 10:45 p.m. to prevent a repeat of the true riot that followed the cancellation of the group's scheduled Nov. 7 tour opener in Vancouver. Up until that point, the promoters were still hoping that Rose would miraculously heal and arrive late from New York via helicopter, as this perpetual bad boy has been known to do time and again, to play for the 14,000 spectators. A helicopter was standing by on the roof of Rose's New York hotel, but the rocker reportedly refused to get up from his sofa, where he was watching a basketball game on TV. First Union Center and Ticketmaster yesterday began issuing refunds to ticketholders, who paid $37 to $67 for the Friday show and also for Sunday's canceled First Union Spectrum show, which was stiffing so badly that tickets had been offered for as little as $10. A facility spokesman said it was "not policy" to refund parking fees for scrubbed events. Pile on the poor ticket sales for other Guns N' Roses shows with Rose's unreliable manic-depressive personality and vengeful fans, and is it any wonder that national tour promoter Clear Channel Entertainment reportedly declared it would never work with this time bomb again? As for the old "Axl's just trying to hype the new album" theory, WMMR (93.3-FM) program director Sam Milkman vowed yesterday that his station would not play the upcoming Guns N' Roses release, "Chinese Democracy," no matter how good it is. http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/news/l...cal/4705528.htm Axl fucked up big time.......... That way when Chinese Democracy comes out it will blow everybody away and sell more copy. Of course we know how biased the Newspapers/journalists/media are toward Axl Rose and how everybody hates a basta*rd that helps them sell copy and makes news. One begins to remember that old story about... if it walks like a duck...quacks like a duck and looks like a duck....chances are its a duck......I just downloaded the St. Louis riot.
