I'd say this not the sound itself, but your own feelings on what it represents.
I love AFD. Rocket Queen was my favorite GNR song for a long time. But the drums had that reverb and 80s sound that feel it way more dated than anything on CD in my opinion. I'm ok with that, I listen to Beatles and Hendrix a lot, both had some sound quality that feels exactly from the era they were recorded.
I do have a problem with Shadow of Your Love sound and mix though. I mean, by itself I think it sounds awesome. With the rest of AFD, it sticks out a lot.
It’s a thin line where you can’t scape the times and technology you have available and can make great use of it, but also not exaggerating too much so it sounds dated the next year. That’s what CD and Hardschool are for me. It’s so dated and it represents a sound that back then was already not very tasteful. The Illusions drums also bother me.

Besides being as important for the band’s existence as any of the other guys, Izzy is a great songwriter and wrote amazing songs with Axl, they’re a great match. I love his Rolling Stones style, his sense of humor, his laidback attitude, his coolness...I could go on. As anyone else, he has his problems, but it would be great to see him back because of what he brings to the table. But that’s life, I’m happy with what we have and I like Fortus, but he’s definitely no Izzy.

OIAM is a hard one. They’ve justified and explained the song through the years and still defend its existence - Duff talked about it on the RS podcast. I don’t think any of them are racists or homophobic and I guess when Axl wrote the lyrics he had some anger towards some people because of his personal experiences, so it seems that he had some mixed feelings and did not express himself in the best way.
The lyrics are well written because he’s a great lyricist, but I definitely don’t think it’s a cool one. It has so much space for interpretation and it often puts the wrong message out there, even if it is sung by a character as they’ve stated in the past. I don’t think it has any space in the world we live in today - not that it had once, but the boundaries were very different.
The music was controversial back then and surely is even more now. They are very different people these days, Slash has said recently that he’s ashamed of some of his interviews from the past, which is great because they were not the most intelligent, sensitive or mature people back then, so I’m sure they would do it in a different way today.
Regarding the use of specific words, for me it’s very simple: besides the fact that private conversations are not made for public consumption, doesn’t matter what it’s about, if any word is offensive for someone or some community, I won’t use it, not because I’m trying to be politically correct, but because why should I? For me It’s like saying “thank you”, that’s what you do in life, you just treat people with respect.

You know those youtubers making videos like “reacting to xyz”? Axl should do a video “reacting to my old rants”! That would be amazing! Just imagine his face when he sees stuff like that “I saw that show in Toledo”. 😂

I can't hear her at all. I believe what you are referring to is the layered vocal during teh chorus and "sweetness is a virtue part". Dizzy is attempting to do that. You can see him singing in the video but you can't hear him at all. I think that is a good thing though because it sounds better with just Axl during that part. In my opinion, those overly exaggerated layered vocals are the only flaw of the studio version.
Yes. I can hear two layers of Axl’s voice: his live singing and also him doing the backing vocals, just like they did in the album. I suppose it’s Melissa controlling this recording?

She adds nothing to Locomotive or 95% of the other stuff she plays.. It is dumb to have her onstage looking like an Anime Doll for 3 1/2 hours...
Axl’s voice from the album in the background (sorry, don’t know how to explain)...it’s Melissa doing that, right?

Once there was this rock n roll band rolling on the streets
Time went by and it became a joke
This is basically the NuGNR period.
But yeah, when you get older, becomes successful and gets shit loaded of money, you instantly starts to be seen as a corporate thing etc. There’s no way a band can pretend their lives hasn’t changed after success. With GNR in the 90s, Axl’s excesses helped a lot with that perception.

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw the setlist last night. The opener is definitely from AFD.
Uhhh, another case of GNR insider trading!

And I think that's exactly what this is about. I'm sure they're making an example of Rick because he was the only one dumb enough to brag about it publicly.
He wanted to be a “celebrity fan”, now he will pay the price apparently. Congrats to him!

Hahaha, so album sales data are down for the last 25 years, that's hardly new. What about the revenue and shareholder return against Capex and greedy (I mean, % of what the artist can have now for their own work)? We can talk about those facts too. I honestly don't know, but I'm sure this would be interesting to look at.
I dont think is the same as movies, though. Different media, different ways of consume the product. The thing with GNR is that they did something: they banned Rick for life and made a scene. I agree, it would be better for them to do nothing instead of this. At the same time, I think they could profit out of an unfortunate situation of the leaks.
I like you. I couldnt have said it better.
Also, if some management does something wrong, it's not just their responsability. The company also needs to be accountable. Axl Rose is the owner. If he doesnt know anything (and he should in this case), it's still his responsability.
I find it bizarre how many people think of Axl as a puppet, basically controlled by anyone, since we all know his history and personality!

You assume Axl knows about any of this in detail. Let alone he himself demanding a ban. That could simply come just from mgmt for example. We don’t know the extent of it. To comment at this point is a bit unfair.
Im sure it sucks to have music that wasn’t meant for public critique/consumption suddenly made available. I also don’t think it’s fair to ask for an artist to simply “get over it”. He’s can feel whatever way he wants about it. It’s his songs...
There’s not much to compare between artists and how they’ve reacted. Different circumstances, different industry dynamics, etc... While I agree to an extent that it’s easier to play along in some instances, we don’t get to see the bottom line on what it affects. Perhaps they won’t even see it for another 5 yrs. Time will tell
Also we all want Axl to be this “don’t give a fuck” type of artist and be this rockstar, yet some constantly complain why he’s not doing things by the book and not acting within some type of perceived box. I just think it’s funny when people say “he should this or that”. People have been trying to make him do things for the majority of his life. Label executives, A&R, Promoters, Agents, Managers, etc... I don’t think that starts now
Ground zero of any GNR conversation we have here is that we don’t know anything, never, we’re always speculating, so we can wonder and think whatever we want. Based on what we know, if I was him, I would let it go, because there’s not much he can do apparently.
I’ve said that a hundred times, but I don’t believe that a guy known for his desire of controlling everything doesn’t know about what’s going on with his music, business etc.

The thing is, if I was a musician and my music was leaked on the wilds of the internet without my permission, I would be pretty pissed. If Axl did not release the material it was because he thought it wasn’t good enough, wasn’t ready, whatever.
That said, once it was out there’s not much you can do about it, you’re chasing the dragon, like Metallica was with Napster. And it’s not that the new GNR album was leaked, one that’s ready to go. As far as I know, it’s music from 100 years ago, instrumental, unfinished, played with random people. This is the kind of stuff that’s only interesting to people like us here, the general public doesn’t care, they don’t even bother to stay after the band plays SCOM for christ sake! I’m not particularly interested in these pieces of music from that bizarre era, the only thing I’ve listened was Hardschool because you talked so much about it.
So, imo Axl should let it go, live his life, be happy with his buddies, write new music and forget about Rick and that ridiculous ban. Just learn to choose your battles, this one doesn’t worth it. And be careful with your stuff next time so it doesn’t happen again.

That’s funny. It looks like Myles is a little kid who did something wrong and Slash’s security guy is keeping an eye on him, making sure he’s thinking about what he’s done. 😄

Yeah - I think he would need to lower it a fair bit (which parts are anyway) but it could be cool. I guess it’s all about using his voice the best way these days and that’s ok. There are plenty of others in the catalog which would suit him better if they would be brave and go for them.
I don’t care about him not being able to sing high as he used to or not using his rasp the whole song, every song. I completely understand that if I want to enjoy that kind of performance, I have to go back to the old 90s videos.
What bothers me is that he doesn’t adapt many songs to his abilities today (and his low voice is so cool!) and also the out of breath situation. When I’m watching all I want to do is bring him a chair and the oxygen mask, I can’t even enjoy the song.

Just saw a shitty video, but Axl seemed much more comfortable with the song.

Listen to this then if you think his singing is fake
I don’t like it, it’s theatrical, to me doesn’t sound like he’s singing from his heart. It’s just a matter of taste, doesn’t mean the guy isn’t a good singer. I respect him, but it’s not for me.

I can't understand how anyone can think that Axl and Myles together on one stage wouldn't be cool, no matter how it would sound
It would be very friendly on Axl’s part because of Slash.

Miles sounds overcoached - a bit like a Broadway producer's idea of a rock singer.
Yeah, it’s very theatrical, it’s like he personally doesn’t relate to anything he’s singing. Sounds fake. Besides I don’t like his tone.

The stuff in bold. That's what it's all about. That... is the Alfa and Omega. : D
If they are touring and not working on new material (which I don’t believe), it’s because they want to. Staying away from the road won’t make them work on new material if they don’t want to.
Maybe they are working on new ideas while they are touring and then when they come back to LA they will record them. There’s no way of knowing how the process is with Axl these days, but Slash and Duff are always writing while on tour.
In the end of the day it’s up to them, how they prefer to do things. And they do seem very interested in releasing new material, they just don’t want to give details.

You're not alone. Like I said before, Axl is accountable. At the very least, he chose to have those kind of people around him.
Do I like TB? I dont care about them. I dont know them personally. I do think their behavior towards fans to be very fucked up. But people keep blaming them for every single bad decision with the band. Isnt that just an excuse to not blame Axl himself?
I don't believe things work that way, but what I said was more about the band as an entity. Slash and Duff (and even the other members) chose to be there, it's their face that people see representing the band.
But the best part is: GNR is known for making bad decisions since forever, even before TB was a thing, Axl (and the other guys) always loved to blame management. The only thing that all these managers throughout the years have in common? A guy named Axl. Isn’t that funny? But somehow TB gets all the blame for anything, from Axl’s clothes to new music being released.
By the way, I’m not a TB fan, I just don’t care about them and think it’s bizarre the attention they get. I’m sure they have their own opinions, as we do, and talk to Axl about them, but ultimately it’s the guy’s call.
In one of his recent interviews, Duff made it pretty clear that the big three deal with everything/decide everything together and that’s one of the things they changed in their relationship. But regarding this leak, I don’t think they got much involved, since it’s all Axl’s material. Don’t know, I’m not a lawyer.

Guns n Roses Ban Fan From Shows Due to Song Leaks (Link)

Sure, no problem.
I think some songs have potential, but I don’t like the final product. Axl has a tendency to get lost, make everything too big, dramatic and overproduced, which I don’t like at all. He lacks in objectivity and that’s why he works great with Duff, Slash and Izzy.
I love the Illusions, it’s the album that made me fall in love with the band, but not so much the drums, which I think still has that 80s drums sound, but the albums are great anyway.
