Axl playing some rhythm guitar would be a piss take but imagine him playing some cool blues on the piano with Slash all over it, probably Steven Tyler doing harmonica as well. That could be cool as fuck and I’m not kidding.
Dude I'd love to hear them do a long, piano-driven instrumental song. If they got Steven on harmonica, or even Richard to trade some solos, that would be great. An 8-10 minute instrumental could be amazing.

A little added update on this, I've messaged someone who allegedly worked as an engineer on the album who says Axl played on Metal Chesnut waiting to hear back again to see if it's legit or a troll, likely a troll imo
'Played on' meaning piano? Imagine we finally hear a new Axl and Slash collab... and it's an instrumental with Axl playing a little bit of rhythm guitar or something random. Will he be credited for the sub-bass?

Not what I expect from Brian Johnson but I like it, it sounds good

He announced some shows in New York and Philly... the pikes website says 'Live shows on the way with special guests'... I really hope he tours with a band again, and comes close enough that I can see him.

A behind the scenes documentary of the making of Chinese Democracy spanning the different lineups of that era would be amazing, especially if bundled with various different versions of the albums, CD2 and CD3 songs, etc.
I don't think it would sell very well, but the hard cores would appreciate it for sure. They would need to release it after they are done with the slow drip of singles, for obvious reasons.
I wonder if they filmed any parts of the 01-02 tour. Some combination of that, the 2006 footage and Forever Together (SA 2010) would be great. Of course any studio footage would be great, but I doubt there's much of that...

Perhaps probably just like the 2000 version, Hard School probably just like the 2000 version, Silkworms probably a hybrid of the 2021 version and 2000 version, The General probably close to the same arrangement with totally different guitar sound, Atlas probably like 2008 CITR way too much bumble, Soul Monster from the cell phone recording sounds like a completely different song, nothing who knows. The 2000 version like a sketch
Silkworms had been re-structured into Absurd by 2006, the demo with Bumblefoot leaked around the same time as OMG and Going Down. I'd guess Perhaps was close to the Village demo but Hardschool was probably closer to the NITL single around that time.
If Atlas was extended and enhanced like TWAT it might be salvageable, but I think we've already heard the best version of it...

How the mighty have fallen
I know you're not a fan of the CD sound, but Monsters is a top 5 song from that era. It isn't really comparable to anything else in their catalogue but for what it is, it's great. It's not WTTJ or Estranged and people shouldn't be expecting 'classic' songs at this stage anyway. But Monsters is a good, album-worthy song, which is more than I can say for the other singles...

Fixed for you…
No.
Obviously the quality is shit on the phone recording, but the structure is different, which makes it interesting. And I definitely wouldn't say they've all been improved...

That cell phone recording sounds almost like a completely different song. The guitars on the Slash version are so different. Love the version we have though
The phone clip sounds really interesting, hopefully we hear a 2004-06 mix eventually, in a box set or a leak. All the singles have been simplified compared to the demos, but Monsters is such a good song that even the NITL version is strong.

I was hoping for more songs like this tbh...
Only really listened to the album once so far but this was the other highlight

I feel like he was trolling the current band/fans with that but if he was actually serious- that’s really funny
He doesn't seem to take things like titles very seriously. This is a guy who named his album Kevin's Noodle House because he saw it advertised on a sign as he was driving to the studio

Well thats what I remember him saying in a interview somewhere

I don't mind the quotes, they just go on way too long. Drop a couple in over a bar or two for effect. We don't need like 16 bars of it.
It's a bit much, but it also works as a sort of '3rd verse' and is over the top in a very Axl kind of way. Imagine hearing 'I wanna tell you a story' then the quotes end like 3 bars later. The solo underneath is great though, I'd be happy if they cut the quote montage from the live versions...

hi, sorry if it was asked before, I'm entering the discussion on page 253, can anybody say what does the title The General mean? Does it refer to the army rank, as in - daddy was the boss, the commander? If you know and answer, can you tag me so I'm notified? thanks
According to Brain, it's just a working title that stuck. They wrote it while eating General Tso's fried chicken, so they called that instrumental The General.

I don't know if my expectations are too low, but I was pleasantly surprised by the solo. Definitely better than whatever he was doing to Don't Damn Me...
I've always thought Bad Apples is one of, if not their most underrated song. Great to see Slash bring it out.

But it wasn’t hyped by Axl or the band. It was hyped by the fanbase, all because of some euphoric statements by Sebastian Bach although nobody knows if he confused songs he heard.
I could imagine the hype is one reason why this song gets treated like it this. It simply can’t live up to the hype
Yea Baz was the only one that talked about it, but we'd heard the orchestration which made it seem like the song would be an 'epic' like the other Beltrami songs...
I don't necessarily agree about not being able to live up to the hype. On one hand the song had become kind of mythical, of course those who were expecting Estranged Pt 2 were bound to be disappointed. But before 2008, Prostitute was probably the most 'mythical' song and it's my favourite CD era track. Monsters lived up to the hype. A good song will be well-received even if it isn't exactly what was expected... The General is a good idea that falls way short of what it could've been.

I like the chorus on Monsters, it's a bit jarring at first but it actually works pretty well. GNR albums (aside from UYI II) all have great closing tracks, and I think Monsters is good enough to be an album closer.
Madagascar might have simple, repetitive lyrics but they work for the song. It's not just literally copy/pasting the first half of the song, like Perhaps, The General or Absurd.
I'm listening to a CD playlist now with the 25~ songs we've heard with vocals, just listened to The General again and honestly, there's a good song buried somewhere in there. I would've mixed it completely differently - crank up the orchestral parts and turn the guitars down (at least in the verses). But again with the simple copy/paste vocals, it feels incomplete. For something that was hyped as an epic, with lyrics about such a serious subject, it feels more incomplete than anything else they've released.

The big crowds only care about Axl and Slash though.
Yea, it's crazy that some people still seem to think AFD5 is an ace up their sleeve. Bringing back Izzy and Steven, or Matt and Gilby (LOL), would make zero difference to the stadium crowds.
They could do a theatre tour with obscene prices, but they could also do that with the NITL lineup. In reality, they'd still play CD and UYI songs, they'd still have at least Dizzy and probably Melissa, they'd probably even keep Frank (obviously Steven's great but I don't think he's physically capable of playing 3+ hours a night for months at a time, people conveniently forget he's had his own issues in recent years)...

An AFD5 reunion isn't gonna happen, and Axl can't sing most of the 80s songs anymore anyway... but I'd actually love to hear Steven's drumming on Shackler's.
