  1. Stranger things have happened, GNR almost had Michael Bland from Prince's band:

I auditioned for them in '97. I think Josh Freese was originally supposed to do the gig. I went to the NAMM show [on 01/16-19/97], and I ran into Axl at the Anaheim Convention Center in California, and then I went to the audition later that night. He was very cool to me. He didn't seem at all like the person the press makes him out to be. The audition went well, but I knew they weren't going to hire me, with them being a bunch of skinny white dudes...[laughs]

Imagine a version of GNR with Bland on drums and Derek Trucks on guitar, would be wild

  2. 1. TWAT: Perfection. The nuGNR masterpiece.

    2. Madagascar: Axl's voice on this is what made me a GNR/Axl fan, so impressed by his versatility. Was surprised people hated his vocals on the album version.

    3. Sorry: This along with Maddy were the first two ChiDem songs I really got into. Love the lyrics as well ("it's harder to live with the truth about you than to live with the lies about me").

    4. Prostitute: Epic drumming from Brain and those Bucket solos in the outro are great, love the lyrics, too (when I can make them out).

    5. TIL: I know hardcore GNR fans hate it but I'm certain this could've been a crossover hit if it had been released as a single à la November Rain.

    6. Chinese Democracy: I love the extended intro and Bucket solo on the album version, but the punchy bass and numetal sound of the 2000 mix is cool, too.

    7. Better

    8. IRS: Love this, happy I got to hear it twice in London 2010, some great guitar work and Axl's screams are epic.

    9. Eye On You: some guitars in the outro could bump this up a spot or two, love the groove.

    10. ABSURD: Would never expect that THIS would be the song that Slash improved the most, but he 100% did in my eyes.

    11. Perhaps (2000 Village mix)

    12. Shackler's: I love that "no one is a-stopping you" refrain

    13. Catcher: Evader made a mix for me where the intro is less busy, makes it a lot easier to listen to, and I love Bumble's solo.

    14. Oh My God: The disco beat is funky, Navarro solo is out there, a fun rocker, pissed off though that the copy I paid for off iTunes has been removed. Wasn't a fan of the changes to the later leak.

    15. Atlas (New Brain drums): Man, that intro is epic.

    16. Hard Skool (with Freese drums + Slash guitar - school bell)

    17. Scraped: I dig this, wish I got to hear it live, Axl really goes for it, really captures his bipolar nature.

    18. ITW: Used to listen to this a lot more,  I dig the funky '70s "Black Bond" vibe.

    19. State of Grace: Axl at his most NIN'y, obviously dig the screaming, wish he would enunciate a bit more, hopefully this was a scratch take

    20. Riad: 2000 Village mix is fun with the bass and no extended intro, the one song where I unreservedly prefer the 2000 mix to the album version.

    21. The General: Indivdual elements are cool, it just doesn't come together as a whole. I'm sure if I'd have heard 15 second leaks à la Hard Skool I'd have been dying to hear it only to be disappointed with the full song.

    22. SOD: I actually prefer the album version as it has the added outro vocals, but no version of this song really does anything for me.

    23. Monsters: the chorus does not work for me at all, I do like the infamous screaming bridge, though. Really want to hear the Finck/Bucket version of this.

Taylor swift also does 44 song setlists https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/taylor-swift/2024/melbourne-cricket-ground-melbourne-australia-33ad9425.html

I thought that might be the one thing GnR was better at. Turns out she's got us covered there too

I was doing the maths on this a few months back and in 33 GNR gigs I've heard fewer than 44 different songs

  4. So far I've got a "Chinese Supremacy" best-of playlist:

    1. ChiDem (album version)

    2. Shackler's (album version)

    3. Better (album version)

    4. Catcher (mix of the album version where it's just vocals and additional instruments before the BBF solo so it sounds less "busy", thanks @evader 👍🏼)

    5. Eye On You (Village leak)

    6. TWAT (album version)

    7. Atlas (New Brain drums)

    8. ABSURD (official release)

    9. Perhaps (Village leak)

    10. Hard Skool 1.5 (official release with Josh drums, both solos layered over each other, and no school bell, thanks @cosmicblues 👍🏼)

    11. Sorry (album version)

    12. Madagascar (album version)

    13. TIL (album version)

    14. Prostitute (album version)

Comes to 73 minutes so it could still fit on a CD as well. If we ever get the Bucket/Finck version of Monsters in full then that could squeeze in there on an 80 minute CD, would probably slot it in between Maddy and TIL.

  5. Definitely the setlists in 2023. My first time hearing PTU, Bad Obsession, DOTF, Anything Goes, Locomotive, Prostitute, and, most important of all, TWAT live. Perhaps was pretty good live as well, at least at the Seattle show I went to, though I prefer the Village leak to the released version. Music video was nice. The General doesn't really do much for me and I prefer (what I can hear) of the Bucket/Finck version of Monsters from the Vienna afterparty phone recording, would love to hear the full version of that one day. Definitely the most exciting year for GNR since 2019 and the Village leaks, which itself was the most exciting year since 2016.

  6. The absolute essentials for 80+% of the audience are WTTJ, SCOM, NR, KOHD, and PC. The rest can be subbed in and out as alternates. Here's a condensed setlist where Axl gets the same number of breaks as he does now:

    WTTJ
    ISE/YCBM/Slither
    My Michelle/Anything Goes/OTGM/Reckless/SOYL
RQ/DTJ (Axl break song in second half)
    CD/Better/TIL/Shackler's/IRS
    Locomotive/Coma/Estranged
    Duff Solo (Axl break)
    TWAT/Prostitute/Madagascar/Sorry/ITW/SoD/Catcher
    Civil War/Breakdown/PTU/The Garden/Bad Obsession/Down on the Farm/Yesterdays
    ABSURD/Hard Skool/Scraped/Dead Horse
    Perhaps/The General/Monsters/Atlas
    KOHD
    Slash Solo (Axl break)
    SCOM
    NR
    Nightrain

    Encore:
    Don't Cry/Patience
    PC

That's 16 songs for Axl to sing. Iron Maiden do 15-16 songs on their tours. Between a shorter set and keeping at least two nights rest between shows, Axl's voice should be in OK shape for a few more years. With just one night rest between Seattle and Vancouver this year, I could tell Axl was struggling a lot more at the latter show, and then there was the two nights back-to-back in LA later which really took its toll on him. Could bump it up to 17 or 18 songs depending on how Axl feels on the night.

    June 6th 1992 - Paris France.

One of the best visually and audio recorded performances of the band.  Great song choices and some really good guest appereances this was the band at the the peak of their game.  Although the Ritz show from 1988 is also a good one.

Baffles me that they included a bunch of songs from that on the UYI Deluxe CDs... but not the epic performance of Civil War :/
