  1. Just back from seeing B.B. King at the Royal Albert Hall and none other than Slash guested for a few songs along with Derek Trucks, Ronnie Wood and Mick Hucknall. Fantastic show and some mighty fine playing on Slash's part. The show was shot for a DVD.

  2. I'm not a huge fan of the new Sixx: AM album either, which is a shame as it was THE album I was waiting for this year. It has a few good tracks but not as good as the last album. It seems they went for a more generic radio friendly sound.

Still, Ashba has proven himself to be a great songwriter in the past, Saints Of Los Angeles was awsome so I still have high hopes for anything Ashba is writing for GN'R.

  3. Imagine a situation like this: the guitarist Ritchie Blackmore left DP in 1994. Let's say that he releases a new solo album (Blackmore's Night) and he puts there a cover/remix of Perfect Strangers song (1984) with rappers and a pop star on vocals.

Possible? What would the DP fans say?

    Now think what Slash did.

All hell would break loose if Blackmore did this.

People may be happy he were playing electric guitar again though.

  4. Yeah I noticed the similarities between DP and GNR a while ago and wrote about it on somewhere else...

Ian Paice is the only original member still playing with DP... the difference is the DP fans don't call their band as Paice's solo act

    and a question:

Imagine a situation like this: the guitarist Ritchie Blackmore left DP in 1994. Let's say that he releases a new solo album (Blackmore's Night) and he puts there a cover/remix of Perfect Strangers song (1984) with rappers and a pop star on vocals.

Whilst this is true it's the Mk II lineup which is seen as the "classic" lineup and there are three out out of five members of that in the group.

There are similarities between Purple and Guns; revolving door of musicians, feud between singer and guitarist but Purple seem to have stabilised now, in fact they've had pretty much the same lineup since 93 apart from Jon Lord's amicable departure from the band and now and again he does shows with them.

  5. Don't forget to vote. I can have Freddie and MJ before him, but allthough I love Lennon, he is no better singer!

Seconded, Lennon above Plant is ridiculous. Sure Lennon was a great songwriter and lyricist but as a singer no way.

  6. I voted.

Personally, vocal skills wise I'd put Axl above Freddie and MJ.

For me in terms of how good a singer they are I'd put it:

    1) Axl

    2) Plant

    3) Freddie

    4) MJ

Now in terms of performing I'd agree that Freddie and Jackson should probably be ahead of Axl and Plant but this is about singing not performing. Doesn't surprise me the way the results are though because many people see singing skill as synonymous with performance skill.

  7. At the end of the day if you go and see a band or an artist who's been around for a long time you expect to hear the hits. Its what the vast majority at the concert want.

Plant still plays Zeppelin songs, Waters and Gilmour still play Floyd songs (hell Waters' past two tours have had little or no solo songs), Deep Purple still play mainly the old stuff and Peter Hook is now only playing Joy Division songs. And also lets not forget Slash also plays GN'R songs.

In fact the only band I've seen play the whole of a new album was Iron Maiden in 2006.

Naturally with the bands I'm really into I would rather hear the new songs because I've usually seen them a few times before. I remember being slightly disappointed when I saw Alice Cooper in 2005 and he only played one or two songs off Dirty Diamonds as I loved that album. Same goes with GN'R, I'd rather they play all of CD but hey I'm hardly complaining when they play all the hits.

  8. Also, lets not forget that Classic Rock Magazine made it album of the year in 2007 based on the leaks and their reviews of GN'R shows in 2006 were HIGHLY positive. So the fact that the album did make album (albeit early) of the year in the main rock magazine in the UK and there was a whole article earlier in the year praising the new music shows it wasn't a complete failure.

  9. Wasn't there an interview recently with someone who was in the GN'R camp at the time who said there was a boxset of all the GN'R stuff re-recorded by the '02 band? Seem to remember reading that here.

I'd love to hear it, I bet that the people who say they really don't want to are at least curious.

As a standalone release it would be a flop but as a download only thing it could work. Slash did some iTunes originals which featured some rerecorded stuff, would love NuGuns to do the same, maybe if/when there is a new album could do a few iTunes exclusives rerecorded tracks which are mixed up with the new stuff.

  10. I'd like to hear it out of curiosity but it wouldn't sell well at all.

I've always thought the best way to release it would be to do what KISS and Journey did and bundle some re-recordings with a new album. In both cases I enjoyed the new versions.

  11. That was really hard for the last 3 days to get tickets. Too many touts have priority on ticketmaster as they're always buying tickets so they get access first.

Anyway, these places have less than 3000, I don't think he would have sold out arena's, but near enough judging by how fast these dates sold out!!

    Anyway, can't wait. :D

Me neither. :D Download was so great but far too short, can't wait to see a full set. If he plays Dime Store Rock in London or Birmingham I may die of happiness.

  12. Well Zeppelin didn't really reunite without Plant as the thing never got off the ground, which, having seen Myles with Slash, is a crying shame because Myles with Zeppelin would have been epic. Although one of the songs from those sessions is coming out on the new Black Country Communion album (Jason Bonham's current band).

I'd love to see the four guys together again but a) Steven is too much of a liability and b.) Izzy doesn't like touring so you have Duff, Slash, Matt and a new rhythm guitarist which is (or rather was) Velvet Revolver.

I think VR is/was the closest we got and probably will get to a classic GN'R reunion, although who knows what will happen at the Rock And Roll Halll of Fame? Having said that it would be awsome if Izzy at least co-wrote some VR stuff even if he didn't tour it.

  13. Being late wouldn't be a problem if it was printed on the tickets.

Saw Peter Hook and his current band 'The Light' live in London the other week, he came on stage at midnight, off at 2am. No one complained because the advert clearly stated "7pm-2am," the ticket had "till late" and the band said on their Facebook page they would be on at 12. I'm seeing him again in Manchester in a couple of weeks, ticket says the show finishes at 3am. Another difference is there was no waiting around for ages there were bands up until around 11:30 and then DJ sets until 3am.

That's how you do it. No one was looking at watches and getting pissed off, no one booing the lateness. However, has to be said that Hook isn't playing large venues. However you can bet that ticket sales would go down if Guns put the end time on the ticket or a warning it will finish late.

End of the day it is unprofessional and I couldn't condone it but personally it doesn't bother me, I, being a huge Guns fan know what time Axl usually hits the stage and know its going to be a late night so I book a hotel. But people who don't follow the band probably expect it to be done by 11pm like most rock concerts so probably assume they'll be able to get the last train home or whatever. At the end of the day though it is the best damn rock show you will ever see.

  14. Given the recent history of this band, I'll believe it when the record is out in stores; and hopefully they scrap the rest of the Democracy recordings and bring in fresh ideas with Ron and DJ, rather than rehash all of Robin's and Bucket's shit

    This.

But it is great news that something is happening.

  15. I agree I think Deep Purple is a better example but I don't consider the current band to really be Deep Purple. For me that band died when Ritchie Blackmore left........

even if ppl get past the name thing, they don't really even sound much like Purple

I think Purple is a good comparison as they are a band who had a very iconic guitar player leave, after which they lost some of the fanbase. They also replaced Blackmore with Steve Morse who has a very different playing style, the same way Bucket and Finck were very different to Slash.

  16. still no clarification by Ron/Richard/Anyone?

I could imagine Ron, Frank, Richard, Dj and Dizzy workin' together.

I don't think Ron likes to give updates on plans that may not work out as it just frustrates people. As for working on new material it may just be Ashba and Axl, who knows? I mean Ron has his solo songs coming out and Fortus shall be touring with Lizzy soon.

  17. One BIG HUGE difference between Black Sabbath and GnR is Iommi was ALWAYS the main songwriter of the band. That is a huge discrepancy that is often overlooked.

Depends on how you define "main songwriter" since Tony Iommi did not wrie the lyrics for BS songs. Tony is a human riff machine but during the Ozzy era Gezzer Butler wrote most if not all the lyrics for BS songs. During the Dio (RIP) years RJD wrote many of the lyrics and the other misc vocalists wrote lyrcs with the exception of Ray Gillen who I read had a hard time writing so I don't know that I would clasify Iommi as the "main songwriter" for BS. Sure he wrote the riffs but not the lyrics.

In any case does anyone still consider the band to be Black Sabbath after Ozzy was sacked? I have great respect for the Dio era but was it really Black Sabbath? and when it was just Iommi in the band I thought he still made some good music but I never considered the band to really be Black Sabbath...Personally I was happy to see the recent short lived reunion band with Dio not called Black Sabbath. And personally it did not seem to effect the music at all as I thought the last album was great....

The name issue will never be resolved in many fans minds so trying to define a set of rules seems impossible.....

I think the Dio era Sabbath was still Sabbath as for the Heaven and Hell album it was the original band minus Ozzy. Also as for not calling the reunion "Black Sabbath" I assume it was for legal reasons but it didn't bother me as it meant nobody went expecting to hear "Paranoid" and it was great seeing the Dio era songs getting played live.

I think the best parallel to the Guns situation is Deep Purple in that you have a band who were/are a band in that they were all involved in the writing process and yet underwent many lineup changes.
