  1. 90% of groups always have lineup changes i mean look at deep purple, black sabbath, iron maiden, lynyrd skynyrd etc since 2006 this band has been pretty stable and since 2002 you have axl/dizzy/fortus/stinson/pitman have all been in gnr almost 10 years or over 10 years and since 2006 you have bumble/frank so the band has been pretty much stable for atleast 5 years now

There are lineup changes, and there are lineup changes.

The clusterfuck that became GNR is not a lineup change in the form that has happened in the bands you mention...

(not to mention that the bands you´re counting up also has a back-catalogue of music that gnr doesn´t come across due to the low release-activity 1999-2011)

black sabbath has had like 6 singers and 4 drummers how many bass players? the only difference between the bands i mentioned and gnr is the bands i mentioned they somewhat came back to the original lineup or the most memorable lineup like maiden with dickinson

Black Sabbath is a perfect comparison to GNR. The only consistent member has been Iommi and by most peoples account he had no right to keep calling the band Black Sabbath after EVERYONE had left.

The only difference is that he didn't create any Allure with his new bands like Axl did with his...

One BIG HUGE difference between Black Sabbath and GnR is Iommi was ALWAYS the main songwriter of the band. That is a huge discrepancy that is often overlooked. This is why no one really makes a big deal that Megadeth has had many different line ups, or Smashing Pumpkins, or NIN, or Black Sabbath, because the main songwriters are still there. Guns N' Roses were originally 5 parts that all contributed to the sound, now it's only one. Guns stopped being "Guns" after Izzy left, my opinion. Did they have the right to carry on? Sure, but it hasn't been "Guns" since then".

Also to the OP, Guns can't keep a steady line up due to long bouts of inactivity, Axl barely being in the studio, band/label conflict, band/management conflict, inter-band conflict, canceled tours, bouts of uncertainty. etc etc etc etc.

    THIS

The main difference between say the Pumpkins and GN'R is that Corgan played all the guitar and bass tracks, wrote all the songs and of course sung them. So an album like Zeitgeist was as much the Pumpkins as before as in the studio the Pumpkins was Billy and Jimmy. So you can argue the only major lineup change came when Chamberlain quit (or was fired depending on who you believe).

GN'R on the other hand wasn't like that which is why there is more negativity, hell Corgan still gets it in the neck for James and D'arcy not being in the band even though they didn't write and play on the records.

If Axl did everything in the studio and was the main musical leader there wouldn't be as big an issue but GN'R always was and is a band. So when people say "GN'R is like NIN now" it really isn't.

  2. I was thinking the same the other day. The hardcore fans of any band certainly are the harshest critics. As for the late starts I don't think thats just something the fans talk about though but yeah especially on the subject of new material.

I think casual fans aren't really bothered about a new album, they see GN'R is in town and go to hear all the hits (as is the case with many bands), certainly they weren't bemoaning the lack of CD songs when I saw GN'R live, if anything they'd rather they weren't there if Reading is anything to go by.

I think a parallel can be drawn with the Joy Division/New Order fanbase in relation to Peter Hook's new Joy Division shows. People are generally over the moon to see the guy playing all their favourite songs (myself included), especially given as New Order didn't play that many Joy Division songs. However he has gotten loads of criticism from fans saying they'd rather have new material and that he should stop living in the past.

Another parallel with Peter Hook is the start times of shows (I was thinking of GN'R when I went to his London show at the weekend). The guy came on at 12am, off at 2. Nobody complained about it because there was constant entertainment before and then from 2-3am DJ sets. I'd love to see Axl/GN'R do something like this, I don't think its the late finish that annoys people but the waiting around for ages. If anything I'd rather Axl came on stage at 12 not 10 as it would be less waiting around for a train!

Of course it was easier for Hook as he was playing a club which has a late license so wasn't fined or anything.

Maybe I shouldn't have used the late starts as an example, but everything else I think is very valid. We complain because we care about how Guns is handled, perceived and delivered. Why wouldn't we want the best for Guns? It's not like we want no promotion or silence or years between albums, and yet, Axl makes it as if simply asking about a follow up album or status is not something a fan should do. "There will still be the same idiots demanding a release date", shit sorry Axl, sorry for having an interest in your work.

I think that's the ironic thing, GN'R (and bands in general) don't realise that fans are critical and demanding (to an extent) because they care.

  4. Huge Pistols/PiL fan and don't know if I can see Lydon doing this. Whilst he was seen as having 'sold out' in doing the butter ad, as has been said that had a point in financing the PiL reunion. He doesn't strike me as a 'part of the establishment' kind of guy at all so whether he'll do this I don't know. It would be cool if it happened though.

The Olympic organisers try to get lots of people to do things, I think they said at one point they wanted Zeppelin to get together for it, now Plant would never reunite with Zeppelin again and definitely not for something like this. Apparently he was asked to perform with Page at the closing ceremony back in '08 but refused (and rightfully so IMO). That rumour could have been total bull though.

  5. Even if there were no sideprojects, the GNR train still wouldnt run smoothly. Like a real band.

    This.

I think if GN'R were a regular band there wouldn't be sideprojects because the band members would be too busy working on stuff but the reality is they have a lot of time to kill and seeing as they're musicians why shouldn't they fill that time with what they enjoy the most and what they do best - making music.

At the end of the day if this were a band which was very productive and releasing albums every few years I'd understand the annoyance at band members doing other things meaning less time to be spent on GN'R stuff but it isn't like that. For example Fortus touring with Thin Lizzy doesn't cause GN'R to be on hold but rather that because there are no GN'R plans until Rio (that we know of) he may as well use the dead space by taking up the offer to join Lizzy. Same with the other members.

It seems that the members of nuGN'R that left did so because they were annoyed at the periods of inactivity, the current band members are getting around that by touring and releasing new music.

  6. The solo projects aren't stopping anything.

When Axl wants to work on a new album, they'll be there. They have solo projects because they're musicians.

No, you don't have "solo projects because you are musicians". A band is a band! It's ONE band. Why do they have to have so many stuff? It's like dating multiple chicks at the same time, it's not good.

My guess is they have solo projects because that stuff is bound to get released without any hassle. Odds are their compositions will be released more quickly on a solo album than a GN'R album. Also its not unusual for people to have solo careers alongside being in a band - look at Mick Jagger and Eddie Vedder.

  7. You REALLY believe that there is no new album because DJ and Bumblefoot are busy doing something else ?

Do you REALLY think Axl is dying to work on something but can't because DJ is promoting the Sixx AM album etc... ?

The bottom line is: these side projects aren't helping.

As for Snakepit, Axl WAS interested in some songs but wanted to rework them, Slash didn't accept that and thank god because it was mostly garbage (except "Serial Killer").

Axl is a perfectionnist, if what Bumble gave to Axl was a mediocre as his last single, then I understand why Axl turned it down. I think they should take the time to sit and make some proper good music and accept the fact it's not going to be gold instantly.

It's not all up to Axl, it's also up to them, like Karri said, what is preventing the band from recording together a full album and proposing it to Axl?

Nothing, but what would be the point?

Of course they could all put their heads together come up with something amazing, Axl would be completely blown away and go away right away and write lyrics and vocal melodies however I'd wager this isn't likely.

It seems that Bucket and Finck (at least the first time) left because they were tired of working on music that (it seemed) wasn't going to see the light of day and if the current band went into the studio together and came up with stuff they risk the same frustration, not to mention the fact that money spent on studio time would seem to be wasted.

I'd imagine ownership of songs/music also comes into play here. Say Ashba or Bumble write songs themselves, propose them to Axl, he says no, at the end of the day they have written the songs on their own so can put them out on a solo record. If however the whole band were to hire a studio and co-write together and Axl were to say no there would be a problem in that its not a song/piece of music written by one person and as such the music wouldn't be able to be released easily as it would be an album by GN'R without Axl something I imagine he wouldn't take kindly to being released. (Also I'd imagine the press would have a field day). So the music gets unreleased and this frustrates the band as they've worked hard on music that would never get released.

By doing their side projects this doesn't happen.

  8. I think if Axl were focused on a new album then there wouldn't be the solo projects. The solo/side projects are a way for the band members to keep themselves occupied whilst they wait for a call from Axl saying there's a tour coming up or an album in the works. Seeing as how its seen as a given that the next album will be more stuff from the CD era and therefore that wouldn't require a huge amount of input from the band as one can assume the songs are already written (and possibly fully recorded) what is there for the band to do now?

As others have said there's no evidence that Axl is interested in making a new album anytime soon, especially a completely new album from scratch as a collective effort from the band. I don't see the side projects as holding up GN'R at all, if there were something GN'R related for them to be doing they'd be doing it.

As it stands I really hope we see an album from the current lineup but I'm not getting my hopes up.

  9. Why don't they just share for free, like most people do. And actually you aren't allowed to sell bootlegs like that on ebay. Or I may be completely wrong now..?

I'm pretty sure it's against ebay rules but many do. Wouldn't be surprised if ebay takes it off before long.

  10. Also Thin Lizzy's Live And Dangerous, often hailed as one of the best live albums of all time was heavily touched up in the studio. I'd say a heck of a lot of live albums are. Axl's hardly the first guy to have rerecorded vocals in the studio.

  11. He'd never do it and I don't think there's any need. Behind the scenes and in the administration side of stuff it may not be your typical band but that's the way GN'R is it won't change any time soon.

You can call it Axl's solo band if it makes you feel better but at the end of the day it's a fact that Guns N' Roses put out an album in 2008 called Chinese Democracy. As long as the music and live shows are good that's all that matters IMO.

  12. Most of these rumours are pretty believable. Always thought there was (at least) another album pretty much good to go from the Bucket/Finck/Brain era. Also wouldn't surprise me if Bumble added parts to a lot more songs than those on Chinese. Which means that Ashba would just need to do a few solos here and there. Ashba said the next album isn't ages away and I took Bumble's statement as meaning new, new material, ie not CD era stuff.

It's annoying if Universal are holding it up, just wonder why? Whilst GN'R's popularity may have dwindled somewhat there's still demand for a new album and it could still make money for Universal so why the hell not?

  13. The amount of Axl nut-swinging by 2 people here in this thread in particular is absolutely insane... Seriously that kind of fan devotion and defense is downright scary..

Funny how all of Axl's bitching about litigation that he seems more then willing to want to go after this. Not to mention the Irving Azoff case, and the Dr Pepper thing...

so if you own something anyone can use it for profit? Ok cool!

I aint swinging myself I see the mans point, I also now see why he is so careful with the band name and imagery. At the end of the day though I don't care much really it is a battle fought between lawyers about something that does not involve me except for the fact that this likely destroys any chance of a cool game with the current line up :shrugs:

I highly doubt there will ever be a game featuring the current line up. They're just not that well known to the general public.

What about the Chinese Democracy DLC on RB2? The whole album....

I'll give you that but I was referring to the likelyhood of a Guitar Hero: Guns N' Roses game like the Metallica, Van Halen, Aerosmith ones. I can't see a fully blown GN'R game featuring CG versions of the current lineup. It would be awsome though. Animated Bumble in Guitar Hero would be awsome, even if I don't like the games.
