  1. The only thing I don't get is what would a Deluxe version really have??

We know there's no "vault" from that era... there's no B-sides... they all ended up on UYI. The actual released music doesn't need sound alterations or remastering...

What's the best case scenario? A new live set? The historical lack of music from this band has meant we the community know every scrap of stuff that was created during that time, as far as I know haha. There's really no AFD holy grails left is there?

And I don't want to hear about Crash Diet..

Slash wrote some great solos in Snakepit (Back and Forth Again, I Hate Everybody But You, Serial Killer, Back To The Moment), VR (Fall to Pieces, The Last Fight) and his Solo stuff (Mother Maria, I Hold On, Nothing to Say, Starlight, Far and Away, No More Heroes, Bent To Fly, Battleground - both solos) not to mention all straight rock/bluesy solos he did in faster songs. I wouldn't match them with GNR era solos, because caliber of those songs is massively smaller, but I'm sure some of them if released as GNR would've become classics.

Bolded ones I would rank as Slash's peak, seriously, those solos are so unlike to his style and yet so thought-out and perfectly phrased that I admire him even more and I know what he's capable of. It drives me because I know that he may write a solo that will flip the world again :)

I think the You Got No Right solo is criminally underrated. The build up... so good!

Do newer fans know about ...

'Cause that is also killer... so emotive. Similar to the Battleground tempo but I think far superior.

  3. Mutt Lange was considered before being deemed too expensive... I would love to have an alternate universe copy of that just for the fun of it. I imagine the Clink version is probably the one I'd prefer but I mean... GNR with hand claps, stomps... maybe some cannons.

Welcome to thaaa jungaaaaaheellll.... *explosion*... got fun an' games... HEEEY!!!

  4. Even lyrically AFD compared to its genre companions isn’t dated or cliche in my opinion. Bands like Aerosmith, AC/DC, Motley Crue you can guess the verses and rhymes before you’ve heard them haha.

The misogyny is probably the most glaring relic but even then if you view it as a portrait of LA and that scene it’s not like it’s inaccurate.

But with respect to the production I’ve read multiple times the mixing is held up as an achievement and there’s really nothing to fix with a remastering. The separation and sound...sounds big not overly compressed... it’s just phenomenal... timeless.

UYI is the one that is always discussed as being prime for a redo.  I’m not really sure how much of that is the mixing and how much is just wanting to trim the fat Axl introduced.

I for one want a version of Garden of Eden without that god damn synth :). That song rocks! It was even better with Popcorn... ah well...

  5. GNR needed to swing!

Replacing Steven with Matt was a hit to that, losing Izzy was a hit to that.

Zakk would have made them into a poor mans Thrash band I reckon... and I don't think Slash is a harmony dual attack type guitarist.... Axl's voice was quickly losing it's balls to the wall abilities. It didn't happen 'cause it didn't work!

The most realistic scenario is a 2nd Slash album featuring Axl on 2 songs.

I never even considered that but I think that actually sounds really plausible.

Sidesteps all the baggage of legacy and fleshing out an entire album and lineup concerns etc.

  7. If you're a Slash fan Contraband is pretty fun. He's really going out of his way to modernize his sound on it and some of it works really well. He played Do It For The Kids on his solo tour and it really drives....Big Machine was a beast live on the Contraband tour... Duff's bass just cracking pavement. The solo on YGNR is epic! I love the Loving the Alien solo as well. Sorum has some cool shit going on too.

The compression of the production does suck though as it causes major ear fatigue.

Libertad is really musically interesting but I feel like Scott was the weak link on that one... boring choruses vocal melodies and generic lyrics -- contrived as can be. The production is also too clean haha... overcorrection from Contraband.

  8. I joined this forum like 13 years ago and GNR will always be my favorite band... but this reunion is fucking boring, man!

I mean god bless Axl, Slash and Duff -- they've given me so much; they owe me nothing. I think they're amazing and always will haha. I just... I thought they would want more as creative entities than what is currently being offered. If they just wanted to feel the love one more time and get massive cash I don't blame them... but I might not even go to the Vancouver show.... which is crazy if you know me! :)

I can deal without AFD5.... but instead of just trying to offer glimpses of their past greatness I want to see them as musicians *now*. Covering all kinds of songs and creating new stuff! Working together... bein' a band.

  9. I still feel like there's something about the AC/DC songs that is allowing him to unleash the beast. Like GNR songs require more middle-low vocals which he can't do but AC/DC is all shrill high stuff?

I dunno... it doesn't make sense! If he can do thunderstruck like that, why not perfect crime?
