  1. Article in Dutch newspaper after the Weert concert: (https://www.ad.nl/show/is-de-broze-stem-van-axl-rose-61-nog-te-repareren-ik-geloof-dat-het-kan-lukken~a210adf1/) Can the fragile voice of Axl Rose (61) still be fixed? 'I believe it can be done' Rose (61) joined Guns N' Roses 38 years after they were formed on Dutch ground and what stood out, was again the fragile vocal cords of the singer. He also surprised everyone with a breakable appearance at the funeral of Lisa Marie Presley. What’s going on with the voice of the iconic rock singer? Nienke van den Berg, who as a singing coach was involved in the program ‘The masked singer’ and ‘Holland's got talent’, gives an explanation. What did you think of Axl Rose’s singing in Weert? ,,I didn't care much for what I heard at Lisa Marie Presley's funeral. I was really shocked there. Anyone of my generation, I’m 40 years old, remembers Guns N' Roses and then you do ask yourself: why does no one protect that guy from himself? But in Weert he did make a noise. It’s losing power but it’s not totally crap.” It’s mainly the higher notes where it goes wrong. How come? ,,It is good to know how vocal cords work. With the chest voice you use the complete fold in the vocal chord. The vocal cord is actually called the vocal fold. They close together. Because of this, they create a big sound and you can really shine as a singer. As soon as you switch to the head voice, the vocal fold will no longer vibrate across the entire length, but only the edges. Especially with pop- and rock singers that creates a somewhat smaller sound. Less full and fierce.” And why does it the sound less good for Axl Rose? ,,If only the edges vibrate, your voice gets more vulnerable. When you’ve lived like Axl Rose, your voice is even more vulnerable. Of course, he has always been singing with many effects. He has a rather bizarre voice. When you hear him sing Welcome to the jungle, he goes all the way up and has a sort of sharpness. You could call it a kind of distortion, like with a guitar. He’s done that for years and you can absolutely do that in a healthy way, but it does ask a lot of those vocal cords. It is only natural that after an amount of time it becomes harder for the cords. Hit sounds a bit like wear and tear, what you hear with him.” What advice would you give Axl Rose if he came to your door tomorrow? "First, an ENT specialist must check how the vocal cords look. If they are ok, you take a singer back to the base of breathing technique. And then steadily let the vocal cords again make those vibrations again. Vocal cords need to make a good trill and then they will produce the sound. When they do that in a stressed way, they get tired, resulting in problems. They are very vulnerable muscles” But is that fixable for a 61-year-old with a hard lifestyle? "I believe that if you go back to technique, you can succeed. Maybe not like to what it was thirty years ago. Your voice will change but you keep your energy. He made those songs and always something of that will hold up. I found that funny to see in Weert. They are older guys of course and he’s got a bit of a gut, but there is something happening there. It is Guns N’ Roses after all.” That was a little bit the case at the ceremony for Lisa Marie Presley. "At the service for Lisa Marie it was too fragile. He never was that little singer. The whole setting was weird. He often performs November Rain on piano, but then the whole band joins him. Then something happens in terms of energy and emotion. Now he just sat behind that piano and nothing more. Also don’t forget that emotion influences a voice a lot. If you are sad yourself, you also notice that in your breathing first. Your emotions go to your throat. ‘A lump in your throat’ is an expression for a reason.” Is the time of Axl Rose just over? Are we longing to much for something that just isn’t there no more? ,,I’m sappy like that, but it is Guns N' Roses we’re talking about. Maybe we just need to turn a blind eye now and again. Enjoy the the moment where he shines in a song. And accept that some parts are a bit shaky.” Autotune is no solution? "No! It's about the energy and the person. Go on, convince me. Those songs are solid as a rock. When it gets polished up completely? No, no, no!”
