My review:
Overall an awesome gig. Thoroughly enjoyed the GNR show and the day itself. My 11th Guns gig since 2006. Download is a brilliant festival to go to. For those considering day tickets in the future, i used the 'big green coach' service and it was spot on. I was home by 1.30am. The crowd at Download is a much more mature audience than other festivals in the UK, i'm 33 and felt like i the average age was probably late 30s.
Axl was in a good mood and on form. I spotted a helicopter circling the site and thought to myself that it could be Axl... turned out to be right!
Slither got the biggest reaction of any song i think... went down really well and people were rocking out more to that than Jungle. No joke. Axl smashed it.
I watched the first half of the show from near the front / centre about 30m back. They came on 2 mins early which was a surprise. Sound quality was good and Axl sounded great on all the usual songs he finds easier to sing. As usual he didn't sound brilliant on aspects of some songs but this did not detract from the overall quality of the show. The crowd was on side throughout and i didn't hear anyone moaning about his voice etc. He is not the same as years ago and never will be but he is still the best front man in rock history in my opinion and does still have a fucking brilliant voice but it isn't as consistent on GNR tracks anymore. My view is that generally people know this now and go to the gig with more realistic expectations than in the past.
The second half i watched from further away, the sound quality was good and it was nice to have 2 different perspectives on the stage etc...
The only issue with this show and is that there is a big 'dip' in the middle where it slows down for the solos etc which does take a bit of steam of it. For me it could be a 2.5 hour show and just as good. I didn't notice this as much in London last year but it was probably because it was an extremely long day yesterday!
He struggled the most on TIL and it was noticeable. I love the song and have seen it performed live many times but this was poor. I would drop it. He used literally about 4 of his voices on it! I actually had a little chuckle to myself about that!
Why they don't include out to get me i don't know... Axl sounds great on this and it would suit his current vocal style.
I'm travelling to Tallinn for the Estonia gig and can't wait to do it all over again!
For anyone going to see GNR in the coming months, you will have an awesome time, ignore negative shit on here... it is a great show and Axl (mostly) sounds great!
Anyone know how many people were there yesterday? I think it was the largest crowd i have ever seen at any festival / concert. It was enormous!
Agree with everything you have said here. It was an excellent day and an excellent performance.

Sat waiting to leave the car park for the last hour and a half, but the show was excellent. He did have some cracking voice on TIL and Coma, but he gave it all 110% band was in great spirits

I was 14, and just not old enough to travel to Slane from Dublin to make the ’92 concert. I was gutted that day, but instead I went to help my dad at work. I never held it against him but I promised myself if they ever played Slane again I would make the journey. Fast forward to 2017 and I live in the UK. I’ve seen nu’GNR several times, Twice in 2006, the infamous 2010 Dublin gig, then again in Birmingham soon after that. I’ve also been to see Slash and Miles K several times. So as I made my way to Slane last Saturday I thought I knew what to expect.
I’ve also been a member of this forum for many years. I’m quiet in real life and this is reflected here also. I’m certainly a lurker, but I check in every day. Back in 2006 Axl responded to one of my comments regarding the 2006 Dublin concert Reading through nearly every thread on every concert, watching the YouTube clips, knowing the setlist and the criticisms on voice, you think you have a fairly good idea of what the concert is going to be like. But nothing can quite prepare you for the experience of seeing something on this scale. It genuinely was magical.
Slane is a great venue, with traffic issues for sure, but I thought the sound in there was fantastic. Royal blood were great, and loud, but the first idea I had of how loud GnR would be was during the promo and logo animations before the band had even arrived. The robot character walked across the screen and the sound of it “shooting” was just insanely crisp and loud. I was stood stage middle about half way back in the field. I saw the helicopters circle the crowd a few times, land and then saw the blacked out busses arrive stage left. The almost immediately the gun animations played out and the looney tunes music. You could feel the anticipation in the crowd.
You know the setlist, so I won’t go into it here again. What I will say is that these guys are putting in everything they have to these shows. You can see it in their faces, their reactions, their movements. Axl hardly stands still, does he sing perfectly each and every note? no, but I wouldn’t expect him to. His performance is not just his voice its his movement and interactions. If I was to call out a weak moment it would be “There was a time” but it was still enjoyable in the context of the concert and the atmosphere, and took nothing away from the show.
Anyway already looking to see if I can make a UK $how. Any questions about Slane ask away

Watching the 'late late show' on tv here in Dublin, presenter just said they have a very special surprise later in the show for someone in the audience and then said the words 'it's so easy' was for sure a reference to GNR

Any chance for streaming?
I'll certainly try. I watched many a concert over periscope so would like to return the favour for sure.

Hi
long, long time lurker. Where's the best place to pick up a ticket for the Slane show. I need a ticket for a friend who wants to come. Prefer to pay face value and not to be ripped off best sites to purchase from?
Thanks!

Not forgetting it'll be 20 years and 1 day since their appearance at Slane castle.
