That Slash Estranged solo was pretty brutal.
-
I know it's a different setup entirely but there's like half the crowd that was there for the Metallica shows last weekend.

Oh cool. Yeah, that's what I was thinking. He may overpower his lower register too if the mix isn't right for that, which would explain his extremely loud ABSURD shouts.
Exactly. Which is why the AC/DC guy did it manually, that along with the previous commenter's point of not wanting to have an unused "open" mic gained up when between vocal lines. This was probably more the case with AC/DC since there wasn't much baritone in that set.
I have a strong suspicion that the new Gnr FOH guy is not riding it manually and that's precisely what's causing the somewhat sloppy sounding extreme peaks and valleys in vocal signal this tour.

That's some very cool info, thanks for sharing. What do you mean by "less than hearty signal"?
Sorry it was a typo, I meant hardy. Basically a less robust signal.
He was pretty much saying that by blasting the vox in Axl's ear it gives Axl the somewhat false impression that he's singing with enough force at times when he's actually not putting out much signal at all. When he said this it made a ton of sense to me especially if you listen to how Axl sings some parts of Estranged sometimes. He's barely moving the needle he's singing so quietly.

FWIW I was lucky enough to do some work a few years back with AC/DC's FOH guy for the Axl tour and he said that's exactly what he did with Axl. He manually rode the compression gain all show. He said that in his opinion Axl's IEM guy blasts the vox too much which leads to Axl sometimes giving a less than hearty signal. If he said this about Axl on the AC/DC tour you can imagine it's 100x more problematic on the guns material where at times Axl is singing in the whispiest of falsetto.

Why does Axl sing Prostitute in that manner? It could be a half decent song but it's doomed from the start when he approaches it with that no power kinda off key mewing. He doesn't even sound like a professional singer.
This is not complaints complaints complaints, I generally think he's sounding decent for his age just wonder about his approach to this song. The style he chooses has zero chance for success.

I wish they would rotate in a few more VR songs. Especially since VR is dead now.

I saw the band in Raleigh in 2021. I'm a bit biased in favor of that show since it was closer to the end of the run (Axl sounded better than he did at the beginning) and it also had what I would argue is one of the best set-lists they've ever played (it was the second performance of "Hard Skool" and we also got "Madagascar", "Catcher in the Rye", "Sorry", and "Absurd"), but Axl seemed on fire in a way I had not seen him in years. At this point, I have just accepted his voice is what it is, but the dude's energy was off the charts, and he talked between almost every song. For me, the fact that he was energized made all the difference and allowed me to overcome any shortcomings in his voice, and he apparently was at this level of energy more or less the whole tour. On the other hand, those 2019/2020 shows were about the only time I can accuse Axl of seeming like he was phoning it in, so seeing the drastic difference was stunning - absurd even
Again, I saw the band towards the end of the tour, but I honestly thought his voice was not as bad as people made it out to be. The only song he truly seems incapable of singing consistently anymore is "Better" (which I do not take lightly, since that's one of my favorite songs), which is funny because he can do well on other songs that I would argue are more taxing.
I was at that show too! Great setlist and great energy from Axl. He really did seem into it. My non Gn'R friend turned to me towards the end and said "They have too many hits." lol

They played So Fine in 2020 although I don't think Axl participated.

Wow dude, that's pretty incredible. It's such a haunting and iconic song, you more than do it justice. Are you doing the backing tracks also?
Thanks! Yes I did the guitars, synths and vox and my brother did bass and I hired someone from fiverr to do drums.

That's GnR to me. VR + CD is essentially what GnR would have evolved to naturally.

Mix is terrible. Duffs intro is great though. Very velvet revolver. Gotta hand it to Slash for taking the parts that Finck wrote as "Slash like parts" and actually making them Slash parts. At least Axl still wants to sound like Axl on the studio shit even though he's given up on that live. It's funny because instead of sounding like Gn'R it sounds like VR + CHIDEM.
I can't wait for Atlas Shrugged. Love that song.

They played the exact same set as the night before?
So fucking lazy lol

I was hoping that they would have rehearsed the following songs even as alts to round out the setlist:
The Blues
Shacklers
If The World
Oh My God
Breakdown
Move to The city
Mama Kin
Pretty Tied Up
Think About You
Perfect Crime
Right Next Door To Hell
Shotgun Blues
Don't Cry (Alt.)
Bad Obsession
The Garden

Why? Why are they so bad? And they are objectively bad. I feel like this was a missed layup by everyone involved. They systematically destroyed any footage of the NITL tour on YouTube and replaced it with this. Ok fine, no matter how ignorant of a move that may have been, that was their strategy. But to replace it with this? These mixes are not even close to broadcast quality. What is going on here?

The Slash solo before Godfather is a jammy slowed down You Could Be Mine.

The 16 and 17 shows had some ups and downs but mostly good. When the band started the 18 tour in Europe the wheels started falling off then, and were never consistantly good. Especially berlin.
Then we get to late 2019 with big axl, with the fruitbowl haircut that reminded me of elvis's vegas gigs before the end of his life.
Hearing the LA 17 shows as the last of the shows was a long setlist, and would have been an excellent way to end the tour and work on a new record beginning 2018.
Great post! You're absolutely right. My complaints were more specifically about how they sound as a band. Specifically playing everything too fast, having timing issues, tuning issues, and generally sounding chugging without any of that gnr swing. That's not to mention the obvious of Axl sounding like a caricature at times. And the mixes are doing them no favors. I was always a fan of Caram's work but Jesus dude these Selects are mixed embarrassingly.
But you're absolutely right. They were still riding the momentum even after a noticeable drop in quality in 2017 and that would have been the perfect time to take a pause and come out with new material.

The NITL version of GNR is just not a very good band.
-
I like the album but the vocals seem buried to me for some reason.

If I would hazard a guess I think we'll be getting the Estranged from Philly because I saw a bunch of requests for that and probably Dead Horse although hopefully not the first time they played it where half the band fucked up. Other than I'm not sure although I would love to get the Catcher in the Rye from Boston. I think that's the best they played it.
As far as the theories that they're purposely putting out low quality stuff, I would say yes and no. Yes they are not putting this audio/video through that expensive final production layer to get that DVD release sheen. But no they are not purposely putting out content with such obvious rookie mistakes as mono audio and unbalanced mixes.
Just my 2 cents.

Ugghh I hate to be negative all the time, and I applaud the band for playing the song and management for putting it out... But I would be fired if I submitted this mix to even my lowliest clients. I mean Jesus what kind of rank amateurs are involved with this and what kind of narcissism is at play where they think that the bare minimum they do is always good enough?
Just to put my money where my my mouth is. Here's my mix. Mods delete this if it's against the rules.

Singing the verses like that sure is a choice. I hope someday in his autobiography we learn why he thinks that weak clean falsetto is the way to go. It's got to be either A) it's a last resort and the only way he can consistently sing at his age or B) too many yes men around him telling him it sounds good.
