Did anyone indulge in Record Store Day?

    Pulls for me:

    Faces BBC Sessions

The Replacements Not Ready For Prime Time TV

    The Stones self titled

    Yes. My stash:

    - Steven Wilson

    - Bill Evans

    - Parliament

    - Mansun

    - Kenny Dorham

Pretty much for everything I wanted and spent a lot less than last year (budget was blown last year as Van Halen live was £95).

Was busier than last year as well. Possibly the busiest ever RSD I can remember. I got up at 4.45am, left the house at 5am, got to the store around 6am and there was already 30 people in the queue.

I just picked that one up. Do you know what shows it has? Paradise City seems to be Leeds 2002, but the album also has My Michelle which i don’t think they did that night

What's the sound quality like on that one? Soundboard?

And he did just the right thing with that. Guys like Slash or Bonamassa just can't play authentic blues, it's Blues rock.

It's not that easy to do that right without getting into cringe territory (looking at you, Joe B.) 😁

Just out of interest, which songs do you think are more cringe in Joe B's repertoire? I can kind of see your point but equally I've always thought Joe did a good job of modernising blues, and his business model seems to work very well (frequently release music, tour regularly, have a live album for every tour etc).

That's genuinely the first I've heard of this.

So he did AFD and they decided to ditch it, then they got him back for UYI and did exactly the same? That's utterly bonkers.

I read Wilson saying that he was baffled by them rejecting UYI but that they paid him and that's all he knew of the matter.

Seems like it. Or maybe he did AFD and UYI at the same time? He has a podcast with his No-Man band partner and they recorded a trail for it in instagram - in the trail he said how remixing AFD got him into Guns N Roses and he now really likes the album, but the band rejected Atmos outright.

Theres Atmos mixes on Amazon Music (Unlimited?l of SCOM and WTTJ for those interested

    Good to know thanks!

  5. Apologies if this is old news (in which case - mods feel free to move / delete this) but it was new news to me and a quick search couldn't find anything on this topic.

Steven Wilson said on Insta today that he remixed AFD in Atmos but it will never be released as the band decided they don't like Atmos.

I new about his UYI work but not AFD.

Damn shame. I'd love to hear that. SW is a legend musically and his mixes are normally outstanding.

  6. Sons of Apollo was a very good band and that was one of a few downsides of Portnoy rejoining Dream Theater. This sounds better than the Scott album so will check it out more. I like Jeff Scott Soto. The first few Art of Anarchy albums though sounded like excellent singer and guitarist with a bum backing band. Possibly harsh but I never could get into it.

  7. Seems a genuine reason.

    Albeit I am not surprised.

Hopefully they quickly announce it's still on and get a new date locked in.

I see Usyk agreeing a fight in between though.

You should watch Zhang fight against Hgrovic. That was also a good one

Zhang won that one from my perspective. Thought the decision was an appalling one.

Reckon it will be a very tough test for Parker.

What player did you get? I’ve been thinking about getting a record player for ages, but don’t know which to get. I want a quality sound but my budget isn’t huge.

Depending on your budget I’d highly recommend Rega Planar 1 or the Planar 1 Plus. The only difference is the “plus” has an inbuilt phono stage so you can plug it directly into powered speakers without needing to buy a separate phono (standard setup would be: record player, phono, amp, speakers - but if you buy a record player with inbuilt phono and then couple that with powered speakers you’re good to go). When I first got into vinyl for years I had that exact set up (Rega Planar 1 Plus) with a set of Edifier bookcase speakers off Amazon - sounded great.

Whatever you do though I wouldn’t go too budget - the really cheap ones have such poor cartridges that they actually damage your records as the needles are poorly designed / too big and can permanently scratch the grooves (not to mention sound dreadful). Go with a proper vinyl if budget allows.

Reach out if you get stuck or need help - there’s a vinyl thread on the forum 👍

  10. Wilder looked hopeless and should retire. AJ looked good albeit against average opposition. Bring on Fury v AJ in 2024 - we need some proper fights in the heavyweight division. This card has been excellent and hopefully is a sign of things to come.

I am honest. Why do you suggest I am not?

Apologies I typed that quickly and broke my own personal forum rule of criticism of opinions. I’m not suggesting you’re not being honest at all. It was just a phrase I misused.

I think the song is great and agree it is deserving of an album spot - I just struggle to see how that would be possible given the poor production.

I’m a big fan of Steven Wilson / Porcupine Tree and his production is always excellent (regardless of what you think of the songs), so it just annoys me that Guns could have such poor QC and / or standards on that front.

I think The General is absolutely good enough for an album and could have replaced many songs off UYIs or CD and made a better album. So no, "we" won't look back at this and laugh because I didn't have unrealistic expectations nor do I share your opinion on the song. I will, though, probably look back at this thread and all the hysterics and laugh.

It is good enough for an album, but not in the released version. The song itself is good, but the production, mixing and mastering are not great at all let’s be honest, and I think the band would struggle to place it, at least as released, alongside Hardskool etc and get away with it sonically. The album would sound like a mess. They should have re-recorded it from scratch as a fresh production with a decent studio engineer, producer etc.
