  1. Billy Joel - The Stranger

I adore this song. The sly backstreet alley piano intro, the bass, the lyrics...just fantastic. There's a certain groove to the verses that just fucking gets me going every time.

Billy Joel - Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out on Broadway)

I debated on whether to post the studio version or the much more lively, well, live version from Songs in the Attic. I went with the studio version. I think it's the worst produced and mixed song Billy Joel has ever released. Yet I feel like it's sort of part of the charm.

  2. It's hypnotic and haunting. I played it for my friend once while he smoked some weed in the woods and he described it as sounding like he was trekking through Vietnam. Sometimes I feel like the answer to life itself is embedded somewhere within the depths of this song.

My fave NIN record to listen to whilst sailing in the ether so to speak is With Teeth, the last two on there, Beside You In Time and Right Where It Belongs (which I take it is about solipsism) are particularly provocative/evocative in that kinda state of mind, enthralling whilst sober of course but the times I've heard that conclusion to such a monumental piece of recording as that album and in a appropriately influenced context to rapport with such layered and suggestive pieces have been sublime. I've been listening to them long before and after and they were already powerful as fuck as a tandem, those two are def. up there in my faves.

Beside You In Time is fucking immense. Just absolutely beautiful music with an amazing climax.

  3. Discuss your absolute favorite songs - like songs that are in your top 10 or whatever. It doesn't have to be something you consider an all time classic or anything. Just songs that are your personal favorites, for whatever reason. I'll start off with two of mine.

Ozzy Osbourne - Diary of a Madman

Randy Rhoads had a terrible haircut, but unless I'm forgetting someone he's the best 80s guitarist there was hands down (which is pretty impressive considering he only lived until 1982). This song is his finest work. The culmination of his classical background combined with Ozzy's "I'm crazy!!" heavy metal.

Every part of this song is perfect. The acoustic classical intro, the RIFF from hell, the guitar during the verses, the orchestral middle section, the buildup, the riff before the solo (which is in my opinion the best guitar riff ever), the solo, the way Ozzy's voice cracks on the final verse - EVERYTHING. Fucking everything.

I confess I don't listen to it often. When I do it's usually at night in the car. But it'll always be held in the highest regard for me. I've gotten goosebumps listening to this song on multiple occasions. I know the lyrics can be viewed as kind of cheesy and stupid, but idgaf. It's amazing.

Nine Inch Nails - Me, I'm Not

Musically this is very different from the last song I posted, yet I find that my reasons for loving it are similar. It's all the pieces coming together to make something brilliant. But it's much more subtle and nuanced here.

It's all set among a one note bassline that just trudges along the whole time as layers come in and build on top and underneath. There's so much going on. Very rewarding with a good sound system or headphones. I hear new things in it every time I listen. Whether it be little percussion stuff like the high hat hits during the chorus or the crazy glitch electronics. Something about this tune puts me in a fucking trance every time. The way Reznor's voice cracks into a falsetto or falls to a whisper. The drop at the end. I could go on...

It's hypnotic and haunting. I played it for my friend once while he smoked some weed in the woods and he described it as sounding like he was trekking through Vietnam. Sometimes I feel like the answer to life itself is embedded somewhere within the depths of this song.

I'll try to think of some other tunes later. Anyways, what are some of your favorite songs?

  4. Can we have a facepalm feature? Similar to the likes system.

Don't have it public, but if a post reaches, say idk 7 facepalms a giant  gets displayed in the corner instead of a star.

  5. RIP Tupac. 10.

0/10. Awful video as well. Had to force myself to finish it.

WFA, I know your persona is to like the most horrible music imaginable but can you please not spam intentionally awful songs as it just makes things less enjoyable. I'm not saying that's what your doing*, but if it is - please don't.

    I'll go with another cover.

    *Actually I am.

  6. I enjoyed Russ's contributions and stories a lot and you were a really good host. Sounded very comfortable and like you've been doing this for a while when it was only the first podcast. WFA was just a disaster imo and really brought the whole thing down. I didn't say anything at first because I didn't want it to seem like I was just ragging on someone who I obviously dislike but since you asked for opinions...

He basically would just echo whatever Russ said. He started out pretty dismissive of Bumblefoot but then as it went on he kind of changed his entire tone to "no one else can do what he did, and I really appreciate him etc." It was kind of cringy.

I only listened to the first part about GNR because I just couldn't bear to hear WFA talk about the music industry...no offense to the other two, but like who cares what some 19 year old kid thinks about the music industry?

Also I think there should be a little more variety in the discussion. And maybe even for some of them have a couple different people call in to discuss different topics. Like, I'm considering doing this at some point but then I think "does anyone really want to hear me ramble about shit for an hour?"

All in all I really like the format and look forward to the upcoming podcasts.

  7. I don't feel comfortable with number ratings so I'm just going to go with Wouldn't Recommend

Yeah, I wasn't crazy about the number system either. Just couldn't think of anything else. I've never seen a thread like this but I'm sure it's been done on the internet before and probably in a better way. We'll figure it out. Rate them in any way you want.

  8. Rate the song above you on a scale of 1-10 (or however you want) and then post a song of your own. It can be a song you like, or a song you want to hear an opinion on from a fellow poster - whatever you want.

    RULES:

    1. If you choose to rate a song please actually listen to it all the way through (unless you are already familiar with it).

    2. Do not rate songs based on your opinion of the poster, the genre, the artist or any other irrelevant factors. This is meant to be a productive thread for fans of any genre of music.

    3. Always try to include audio whenever possible - Youtube, Soundcloud, etc.

    4. Goes without saying, but do not derail the thread with insults and jabs (as this has been happening on the forum a lot lately).

Ok, I'll start us off I guess. Here's a cover of Arcade Fire's The Suburbs by Mr. Little Jeans.

  9. The Slip is an underrated work of genius imo. Very distinct odd sound to it. Nice to draw comparisons to ChiDem as well. Both were released in 2008 and featured contributions by Freese and Finck yet they were recorded in drastically different circumstances.

The Slip was recorded and released in three weeks for free and void of any label interference. Their previous studio album was only two months old.

Chinese Democracy was recorded over 14 years, a massive budget, a multitude of musicians and released with an exclusive Best Buy deal. Their previous studio albums was 17 years old.

They're polarizing opposites, yet they share two band members and the year of release.
