  1. I’d guess the main reason he didn’t sound shit with AC/DC was that he knew he couldn’t get away with just coasting it. Having the honour of being called up by one of his favourite bands from youth meant putting everything into the performances. Also it would have actually been interesting and energising to sing that catalogue rather than doing same old SCOM and other ballads about women he doesn’t love anymore. Maybe there was a vocal coach involved too.

To improve the GnR performances, yes tune down a step, even a full octave like he did for some Locomotive parts, and maybe change voice for some, I’ve always thought November Rain would sound better with the Patience voice anyway..

  2. I would love it if they brought back The Garden. It’s one of the few greats on UYI, imo. The only thing is, it doesn’t really translate well to live. Like at Saskatoon 93, it’s cool to hear it, but even with the hq audio it’s a bit iffy.

It would’ve worked better with the Tracy, Roberta etc backing singers doing the ayyyyyyy vocal bits probably. Anyone know if it was played during their time, 92 ?

in a way, Garden is the opposite of DTJ. Garden done in the studio is reall good, but live it’s a bit sketchy. DTJ is great live, some of Slash’s best guitar work like Argentina 92 n 93, but album DTJ is a bit flat, doesn’t express the epic experience of the live UYI performances..

  3. Reading the parts from where he joins the band now; a few things that are noticeable:

The first offer he got, $1500 a week, was really bad, he negotiated s better one

He says Slash gave him a shit deal on the record, ‘half a point’ whatever that means?

He describes Slash as a cunning businessman, almost makes him sound a bit crafty

By contrast he describes Axl as a ‘giver’, financially generous with gifts etc

The story about Matt’s Mum stealing Axl’s weed pipe?! And his rabbi coke dealer?!

There’s some funny shit in this book so far..

  4. I did make a YouTube playlist of Lies, AFD and UYI once featuring all the best live versions 87-93 for audio and video. It still there but with blanks from some takedowns .. it’s a fun thing to do anyway.. (choose best live for all tracks)

Locomotive, Don’t Damn Me and Garden of Eden were problematic as I recall..

  5. I don’t know about best, but the funniest I’ve seen is from something like Toledo 1988.

He does the usual “do you know where the fuck you are ?” - Then after a pause says, still in the high rasp, “Good, then go home”, lol

Then he realises his pun might be taken the wrong way so adds “I’m joking!!” as a sort of disclaimer lol.

  6. Brownstone is one of the most played songs of all, and it’s not going anywhere. Personally it’s one of my favourites so I definitely don’t think it should, or will, be dropped. More to the point, the fact that it’s in low vocal register makes it easy for Axl to sing (same as ISE) so it’s perfect as an early set vocal warm up. It just wouldn’t make sense to drop it.

Much as I’ve long held that dropping and octave on some songs to avoid excessive Mickey is something Axl would never do for the sake of pride, I’m beginning to think it may be the only solution to his ever degenerating voice. It worked fine with Locomotive. I just listened to NITL Dead Horse and tbh he sounds awful. They should just have him do an octave drop, or just change key of the songs across the whole set list, pitch them down so he doesn’t have to force that Mickey so much. I don’t like moaning about it but it’s beyond a joke how bad it is now.

  7. Tbh sounds more like Elton John being a diva. He was demanding to see Axl and rehearse at that specific time. It could be understandable Axl might’ve been exhausted at that time and needed sleep to pull off the performance he did. I don’t think Axl would have been intentionally blanking his hero. He was probably genuinely not in a state to see anyone at that point, let alone rehearse. And he did eventually rehearse with Elton anyway, as he recounted in the Eddie Trunk interview.

  8. A little known aspect of this performance:

At the beginning of PC after the first ‘take me home’ you can see Axl point at some people in the crowd and scream ‘Shove it’!  - Those people were actually the protesters who had been trying to get GnR removed from the lineup because of homophobia on OIAM. They were unsuccessful but still attempted to disturb/provoke Axl with some banner in the crowd. He knew they would be there and hence tells them to shove it.

A bit later on you can see Duff and Axl share a warm handshake. That was Duff saying thank you to Axl for not going on a rant about the protestors. Duff had requested Axl remain calm and not rise to them on this occasion as it would spoil the event. Axl managed to abide by this and hence Duff was thankful.
