Something I’ve noticed that probably means sweet nothing but the date caught my attention, Biffy Clyro literally just announced an anniversary vinyl bundle, something I’d be interested in. The release date is December 8th, I don’t know why but I found that an odd coincidence considering the changed date of the Perhaps vinyl is also December 8th. Originally the release date for Perhaps was today obviously along with some other big releases today including a Prince SDE and a Taylor Swift album. They came out without a hitch. Are bigger artists or more popular/in demand releases getting priority over smaller releases? And that could be the issue Guns have run in to with Perhaps? And December 8th is a quieter time to release vinyl?

    … perhaps?

GNR is not some small indie band from their mothers basement. If they wanted a vinyl out today it would’ve been out.

Sure, I agree, Again, I don't disagree with the criticism, in this case I disagreed with the notion that they don't do anything good.

See, to me it makes it more of a gut punch. Because I’ll give credit where credit is due. The Perhaps rollout was pretty good (minus the small delay thing that I’m willing to look past). We had a well edited music video. Actual promotion with the radio talk shows. And then a release planned of their most mysterious song?

To me, I was excited because it felt like there was a chance of this band breaking its reputation and doing things right. And then they just went back to the pain and suffering we as fans go through.

This is all a part of that stringing us along method they’ve developed. Paying their fans small service to promote their overpriced tour tickets and merchandise. If we would stop shelling out thousands of our hard earned money the market might correct itself.

It’s all a fraud game. I gave my money this tour because it seems like they were doing things right. New songs, promotion, new setlist. Only for them to announce one of the new songs isn’t coming for 6 weeks with zero communication. I’ve already posted it twice today but it really is the Charlie Brown meme.

You think he’ll address the delay tomorrow night in Denver? Fuck I would like to hear an explanation. But we all know, we all highly doubt it.

No. He’ll trot on stage Mickey-ing the entire setlist as thousands of soccer moms say he’s better than ever. He’ll say “this is a new song. This is Hard Skool” and “this is a loving, happy song” before YCBM. And then this cycle will continue until he retires and us fans get fucking lied to frequently off stage.

Trying to see the funny side of this debacle but can't help the feeling of thinking we won't ever get The General now and that it really is time to move on from hoping from anything new from the band for good.

This feels like the straw that broke the camels back for some reason. I don't think the delay was related to the pressing at all anymore, as even though it's slow to get stuff made, the pressing plants will have given them a realistic timeframe.

Which leaves the reason being that they simply don't want to, or aren't ready to release The General, for whatever weird reason has stopped them releasing anything else.

This is basically how I feel.

After years and years of no new music, we finally get our first unheard song in 15 years. We’re all excited and impressed GNR did something cool and unexpected. They released a music video. They actually promoted their song. A delay is one thing. But the sheer audacity of delaying it 6 weeks the day off without telling anyone is downright disrespectful. I really don’t think it’s going to be released anymore at all.

I almost think GNR management has had enough with our side of the fanbase and is trying to just get rid of us. A lot of the hardcore fans seem very burned over this, and I don’t think I’m really going to be supporting the band anymore myself. People will write this off as a conspiracy, and it may be, but there’s almost no other explanation that makes sense. It really feels like the hardcore fans are just hated and something management and the band would rather be without.

I still see the General as the R Side on the US store. Where did you see this absurd (acoustic) bs?

I’m HUGELY disappointed but keeping my order, as am keen on physical media. This absurd acoustic business may cause me to reconsider though..

In other news… Looks like the Beatles will beat GnR to the punch on the next release.

Stones released an album. Beatles released an album. GNR can’t even release a single properly.

    But why?

How does or will the “success” of The General affect your enjoyment of the song?

Moreover, if the guy who helped to create the song and laboured for years to get it to where they want doesn’t care  about achieving maximum success for it, why should any of us?

Because if it does well, maybe we get more, instead of having just 1/3rd of an album spaced out over two years. I’ll also say that it’s more of the logistics that’s pissing me off too. I would like to have a digital release so I could listen to it easier. Share it with family members who care about GNR without telling them to check out a weird audio file. Why restrict that from the fans? And if they were gonna restrict that from the fans, why not make it a pivotal marketing point of the vinyl so it would sell better?

But you’re right that I’m giving GNR and Axl way too much credit and having too high of expectations for them to do anything in an optimal way at this point. Axl has been mentally checked out for years if not decades.

Do you think Axl cares all that much about money and publicity at this point?

If I had to guess, and it’s just a guess, an initial physical only release likely works for Axl’s desire to do something different; the mystique of it all and a throwback to how music use to be distributed.

I think concerns over marketing, exposure, and generating income from a 20+ year old song are misplaced.

You’re right. Axl doesn’t care and hasn’t for a while. But I want the band I’m a fan of to do things optimally and be as successful as they can possibly be. These weird obscure releases only makes “new” music less and less likely. With Perhaps they were rewarded with praise and good enough metrics for a band their size. No one will even know this song exists.

It floors me so many people are shocked by this. We have a song that’s a b-side to a 7”, which was never announced (as of yet) to be a part of anything else, and no mention to the fact that it would be streaming other than a cheeky, one word comment from Fernando on the day the 7” was announced which if taken literally at face value means “I don’t know, but maybe”. There was no reason to ever have a strong belief that it would be streaming - sure people on here are claiming there’s never been a studio GN’R song that hasn’t been released on streaming, but not taking into account the context; there’s not much historical precedent here since GN’R has hardly released anything since streaming became a dominant form of music consumption. Yes, almost all of the old b-sides have ended up on streaming also…because they were re-released as part of the various AFD reissues.

Whatever people on here think, this isn’t an uncommon practice for an artist to release a song as a vinyl exclusive. Plus you still get Japan getting exclusive tracks for many, many releases. The amount of records I’ve purchased because of exclusive tracks is sizeable, and this isn’t even a hard one to get a hold of. One of the bands I collect I had to track down a specific German pressing of an LP because the record label forgot to take a song off the 2x10” version that had been axed from all other releases internationally. If something similar happened here, then I could maybe understand the reaction people are having in this thread. On top of that, at least they’re choosing to give us actual new music on a record, unlike so many artists out there that release 20 different color variants of the same damn record hoping everybody goes “oh that’s pretty, I need it!”. There’s many, many things I critique GN’R over, and I’m quite vocal about it. This release is not one of those things.

As for the possible delays in shipping/release - the record pressing industry has been in absolute shambles since COVID, the delays on vinyls have been both frequent and lengthy across the board. If there are delays (which we still don’t entirely know), it’s not something you can hold against the band specifically. That said it’s true they could be communicating potential delays better.

But all of this…talk about turning an ant hill into a mountain

    Very well said
