The new season started last Sunday.  Since those that crazy guy shot off those missals most of the people are separated again. Strand has made a new society and he's in one of the best places so far.

The rest of the survivors are just trying to stay alive.  The world was bad enough before, now it's really bad.

It’s post, post apocalyptic. I like this direction.

Yes, they have their own projects to go to and write the way they want to.

Axl and Slash/Duff have been used to working in very different ways. Axl likely hasn't written in the "traditional" or so called "organic" way (or at least by "sitting as a band" and jamming) since the Illusions. He probably wrote some things on his own or with Tobias and, other than that, he mostly operated like a producer, having the members send him tapes of what they'd done, giving directions on how this or that part should be changed and then crafting songs by combining parts. That's how CD was created.

So, although I was hoping for at least one new song, I'm not surprised to hear that they haven't even gotten in the process of trying to write something new together. Maybe they are all afraid of it.

The big 3 have not written a song since 1989-90, so I would say that there is some fear involved in the lack of recording new material.

Axl had a great voice, he was musically talented, he wrote some great lyrics. But he’s one of dozens. I love GnR and it wouldn’t be it without him. But he’s a singer in a rock n roll band, there was almost 30 years of it before him. What did Axl do that others didn’t? Even fucking off for a few years under mysterious circumstances had been done by Brian Wilson. Brilliant as GnR were in their hey day, they were Zeppelin for the 80s. (Better than in my opinion, but that’s not a popular opinion).

Axls voice soundtracked a generation but so did and, have many others. His lyrics are interesting, but so were Jim Morrison’s. What he’s done had been done before.

You think GNR are a better band than Zeppelin?

For those who don't have the time to listen. Views/subscriptions on YouTube are still encouraged :)

I heard someone on here say you don’t ask enough GNR rebated questions, but there is always cool and unusual bits of information from these podcasts. If you compiled all the cool and unheard information you have gleamed from your guests about GNR I would more than say you’re doing great adding to the repository of GNR knowledge.

Definitely beautiful colours, but that seems to have contributed to how delicate these ones are. Seems like they are scuffed up by the time you get home from the show...

I haven’t seen a gem mint Columbus as of yet because of the fragility of the darker areas of the new lithos. But, I think the change was needed and appreciated by me.

Were you in a coma for 2016?

I believe this leg is consistently better than 2016 US lithos.

Well another leg of the never ending tour has come and gone. Frankly I'm surprised they got through it with the way lockdowns are coming back, but enough of that shit...we got a brand new crop of lithos to discuss!  And I for think this is the best batch in a long time!  Certainly better than the 2019 series which was clearly running out of gas.

Lots of them took inspiration from movies, and I'm OK with that cause I love movies and I love GNR...what could go together better?

I'm gonna list just a few that I thought were awesome...I'm taking pics from amaninjapan's amazing blog "lithorati" of course....your number one stop for everything you ever wanted to know about GNR lithos but were afraid to ask.....

    First up is Detroit.

I'm a child of the 80s and RoboCop is one of my favorite movies of all time and favorite characters.  What a match made in 1980s heaven....GNR and RoboCop!!

An added bonus is the "homemade" airbrushed look like you'd see on the back of a jean jacket at a county fair.  There's no nice way to say this....it just screams WHITE TRASH and I love it!   Love the subtle GNR references too, like GNR replacing the OCP logo from the movie.  It's so bright and garish and 1980s.  Love it...my favorite!

Next is Missoula, from the undisputed king of GNR lithos, Mr. Arian Buhler himself.  He stands head and shoulders above all other litho artists for good reason...dude is just a beast!

It's a gorgeous rendition of the rotting remains of Evel Knievel in his trademark stars n' stripes helmet.  Now I don't think I'd wanna hang it on my wall and have it be the first thing I see every morning when waking up, but the draftsmanship is impeccable.

Next one just kind of speaks for itself....Hollywood!!  Take one of the single most iconic movie posters of all time, and make it a GNR poster.   What do you get?  Forget it Jake, it's Chinatown.   Absolutely lovely and the colors are gorgeous.  Hats off once again to the one and only Arian Buhler.  This one should appeal to both music and movie collectors cause it's a given that the Chinatown movie poster is probably in the top ten of all time.

    2021-08-19-Los-Angeles.jpg

And now, one of the most flat out fun, whimsical, and just plain CUTE lithos on this leg or ANY leg going all the way back to 2016.....the St. Paul "Peanuts" tribute.  If you don't think this is adorable, you need a hug.

Slash's goofy signature Charles Schultz grin, Duff not giving a fuck on bass, and Axl as Shroeder in deep concentration on the keys, with his motorcycle/piano hybrid.   I love it.  I just love it.  It's 100% FUN, the way rock concerts and posters should be!  And it really stands out in a sea of skull imagery!!  What a winner!  (And again...Buhler is the man!)

    2021-09-21-St-Paul.jpg

Next up is a delightful mish-mash of some cool styles....Baltimore.   Obviously inspired by Edgar Allan Poe and the Raven, you get a three headed raven in the forefront representing GNR's "big three" but I also love the Ralph Steadman inspired font for the logo, and I'm a sucker for anything to do with Estranged, my all time favorite GNR song, supposedly being written out in fancy script by hand by the corpse of our pal Poe.  It's a little bit busy, but I still like it and it's unique enough to stand out from the rest.

    2021-09-26-Baltimore.jpg

And last but not least, I like the double spread from Hollywood.....FLORIDA?  The fuck, there's a Hollywood in Florida now??

Anyway, these two lithos don't really break any new ground....but they do the job.   Fun, big, bold, exciting, gets the point across.  What I'd consider a solid "B +" rock poster.  Something you'd like having hanging on your wall after the show.  Giant GNR robots are fun....almost a 70s throwback thing.   That's all really, I just think they were well executed and I like 'em!

    2021-10-02-Hollywood.jpg

So how'sabout you, fellow litho fanatics?  Agree, disagree, have your own radically different opinions?

I agree with all your points. This is the best leg for US lithos so far. And the colors are beautiful.  I’m really looking forward to Europe.

It's the most interesting the band has been since 2016. The reunion has had some clear phases.

NITL Part 1: OH MY GOD SLASH AND DUFF ARE BACK (16-17)
NITL Part 2: Appetite Boxset, Some small setlist changes, oh this acoustic version of Move to the City is intersting I guess (18-19)
F'n Everything has F'n in it: Lockdown silence and WTF SILKWORMS IS BACK?! (2020-Present)

We'll see what happens now. The reunion wow factor is definitely over and they pumped the AFD nostalgia well dry. Maybe they do something big for Illusions but they already play all the Illusions songs people want to hear. They either tour on the novelty of just existing for the next 2 years or they release more shit.

The F’N was kinda lame. It was in most of the lithos. Made them tacky.

So I’ve been on a SMKC kick tonight for the first time in years and it got me wondering..with GNR currently touring and releasing a few new songs and SMKC releasing music soon and likely touring…who do you honestly think is a better band musically in recent years? Not history or even necessarily songs in and of themselves..but say since 2016 to now who is a more impressive band live?

Martin, are you practicing material for open Mike night?

I don’t know if this has been talked about, but…

Listening to shows from 1986-87, demos from ’86 and of course Appetite, you can tell that Axl’s voice was young and “tender”, without much scraping and so on. Even on the Marquee show (June ’87) and Whiskey (August ’87, WTTJ video recording), his voice remains the same as on the album, demos, or LA club shows; But then at the Ritz show (October ’87) his voice is rougher, scrapedier, and less high-pitched (but still very good). Then in ’88 he kept singing that new way, and all the shows are incredible in terms of his voice (except Ritz ’88, which doesn’t sound very good even if it’s epic.)

Does anyone know why his voice changed in such a short time? It seems to me something very curious, because except for the acoustic show in October ’88, his voice never sounded like it did in 1983-87.

I assume he was still exploring his range and expression as an artist.

Looks like Josh is a touring member for Pearl Jam now. I believe he also plays on Eddie Vedder's new solo record. Kinda cool of them to embrace him like that after the Peppers canned him.

Wow. That’s unexpected but awesome, I love Josh and PJ.

Yes other bands would kill to have such monster albums in their discography. Only in GNR land is something like that ignored. I guess GNR is so huge they don't have to do anything, but it still seems awful to do absolutely nothing. As far as I'm concerned, GNRs legacy is AFD and the UYIs, the rest is for the dedicated.

Lies, too. Patience is a huge song.

Do what you want, just please don't associate my website with you. This isn't a case of you using a vague phrase or generic word like "screwdriver" or "Franklin" as your username - If you do a google search for Lithorati, there's less then two pages of results and they all have something to do with my website.

If you sell something using that username, it's not unreasonable for people to think it's me - which is unfair on me since I have nothing to do with it.

You knew it was me. You could have reached out to me. Your response was over the top. And after the warpig thing I still went out of my way to get you a Dallas litho. At the very least you could have heard me out. PM me and I’ll give you my info and you can change it. I don’t know how to.
