I didn’t care then and I don’t care now but Hawkins always seemed to have an ego beyond his talent. The Darkness had some great tunes and were great live but they were also a bit of a shit Spinal Tap. AC/DC riffs, Thin Lizzy guitars and a Freddie Mercury vocal style.. they just seemed a pastiche of the great bands before. I think Justin believes his band have a place at the big table but they’re at the kiddies table in reality. I guess it’s the worst thing you can say about someone but he’s just such a fucking idiot that I cant be annoyed by him.

I saw 1992 Axl & 2006 Axl and he was just as good in 06.

Were/Are The Darkness big outside the UK?

GnR were almost 2hrs30m late when I saw them in 92 it was my first big gig so I didn’t know it wasn’t the norm.

Weed as a solution to mental or physical pain alone isn’t a solution. For it to be of benefit I think its something to use as part of a list of things you do to help whatever the underlying cause is. Counselling, Physiotherapy, things like that need to be “used” as much as the weed in order to get well or better or live with whatever the underlying reasons your smoking it for. It’s not a replacement for other things. I think that’s more important with something like PTSD for example, talking to a person and having some support and a person who can empathize and give you skills to deal with situations is a must, the herb can’t help what a person can in those cases. With only 1 song off CD last night, is that the least they’ve played from that album this leg?

Duff did a turn with AIC before the Guns set, Guns were were pretty good, I think I enjoyed this more than the last BC Place gig. Axl was ropey at times, but no denying the man gives his all. It was a little weird sitting there before the gig thinking it’s 31 years since I’ve seen this band first…. I feel fucking old and will definitely feel older in the morning! AIC came on quicker than I expected, I was outside the stadium having a toke when Am I Inside kicked off, I just made it in for the end of Again, but they played a great set.

If you see a guy with long hair and a long beard in your vicinity it’s likely me! Alice are on about 6:30pm or so I’m guessing?

I just picked up a ticket for section A8, 5 rows back for $100 just now. Anyone have any idea how much those sections were before today?

For anyone who didn’t pick up a copy of this live in Heilbronn RSD release, I highly recommend it. This gig from Madrid is part of the lost tapes series also, and has this killer rare version of Silver Machine, a tune Motörhead didn’t perform too often.

Its a different sounding Motörhead on the debut, it’s almost a punk album. Lost Johnny, Vibrator, Motörhead, Iron Horse, a scorching version of Train Kept a Rollin… There’s some great stuff on there. “Motörhead” werent really born in my opinion until Overkill when Eddie & Phil started writing the stuff with Lemmy. I don’t think they wrote much of anything on the Motörhead record. Motorhead were absolutely the loudest band I saw live, My Bloody Valentine a close second.

I’m waiting for the album to be released to listen to any of the new stuff. I’ll pick up a copy on vinyl and spend the night with it. It’s kinda my ritual with certain bands. Listening to them describe the album on the Fallon thing, it sounded like a one album Exile type mix of songs, they mentioned a few styles that’ll be on there so I’m hoping it’s that type of range material.

Love Motörhead and was lucky to catch them 8/9 times over the years. The album I’ve spun by them the most over the years has to be the debut. They were such a killer band live. I picked up the Live in Heilbronn RSD release this year and much as I love Philthy & Mikkey I have a fondness for the Pete Gill era, it was a bit more chaotic live. There’s a little part of me that’s still in disbelief there’s a world without Motörhead in it. I’d love to catch Phil & The Bastard Sons but no gigs came my way yet. @Powerage5 really cool you got to meet Lemmy.

Way too many great gigs to remember them all…. Some nights the bands were a blur they were that good. Worst: too many to mention… Usually bands I suffered through at festivals or as support bands, the odd guy like Dylan who was incredible and terrible all at once, I don’t think I’ve ever walked out of a band in my life. Maybe as far as the bar. Seeing a band at its peak or better yet just before is unlike seeing any other band there’s a magic in the air at those shows. The 90s were full of those gigs. Some bands or artists like Neil Young, The Stones, AcDC, Pearl Jam, Sabbath, Maiden, Primal Scream…. I’ve never seen a bad gig by those guys, the album they’re touring might be a bit shit and the odd concession to age made, but live they always deliver. It’s hard pick 1 or 2 gigs by those guys, they’re great everytime I’ve seen them. I’ve seen Uncle Neil 12 times (possibly more) and every gig was different, he was a different version of Neil at each one.

Sorums sound on the Illusions tour made him sound more heavy handed and metronomic than he actually is. His sound with Velvet Revolver was 1000% better, you could hear Sorum can actually skip and bounce the kit, he can’t swing like Adler could but he was a better sounding drummer with VR.

And you don’t get the two guys you mentioned unless you appreciate the keys, he could have gotten regular session guys but he chose two guys who are part of the history of rock n roll, guys who played on records he grew up listening to…. he had an appreciation of piano/keys in that rock n roll way. I think the demo to 14 Years is probably what Izzy wanted GnR to sound like.

Mate count the songs Izzy has a co-write or wrote alone across the Illusions albums. Overrated sounds like some feeling you have rather than an actual reality. Izzy laid his rhythm parts and fucked off leaving some of the heavy work to Axl & Slash, but it’s likely Axl/Slash had the final say on the mix of those albums so the tunes on illusions were going to sound the way they wanted them to, but had Izzy not helped create those songs there’s nothing to record. It’s ok to dislike a personality or whatever, but to say Izzy was lazy and overrated just doesn’t make sense when you look at the writers credits across AFD, Lies & UYI….
