Please don't start using "facts" as the barometer of what's acceptable to discuss around here.  Take a look around. LOL

We're posting on a fan forum.  Everyone's take is subjective.

I think you're maybe intellectually cheating a bit, and aren't acknowledging what the word "fan" is the shortened version of.

These things are all part and parcel of being a fan(atic), to many folks.

Should I append every one of my posts with, "but, he's played guitar on stage at a professional level and I haven't?"  Of course not!

I feel like we all understand that we're talking about folks who have achieved a certain level in their given fields beyond what most humans have or will.

    Doesn't mean they're beyond reproach.

A sensible response, and agree with your final comment 100%. :) Perhaps not suited for this type of forum! There's a reason I don't use social media, and the same rule possibly applies here! Despite being a Man U fan, you've defo made me think! <that is a joke before anybody start fizzing> Cheers pal! :)

Feel like I've stumbled onto a people.com forum.  I come to music forums to discuss music and the musicians who make it.  Could give a toss about his wife or his bank account.

According to this shallow outlook, I can't criticize Manchester United when they give up a goal too many or make bad transfers, because I don't actual play football, don't have an instagram model wife, and every footballer has a larger bank account.

Based on my internal logic, Buckethead made a jazz album with Tony fucking Williams, who drummed for Miles Davis' mid-60s quintet, one of the greatest ensembles of all-time.

    He "wins."

No, that's not what I was saying at all. It's of course possible to not like what somebody does. But when you start saying they are nothing or completely shit just because you don't like it... then hang on a second that's purely subjective. It doesn't make it a fact. And on the topic of football you often hear football fans saying so and so is shit... yet that so and so has a professional contract and the fan doesn't.

Fuck you. You know nothing about me or my life. I do not aspire to be a crappy musician that people laugh at. If you think he's living the dream goody for you, but being shit at what you do is not something I envy.

Hey baby boo, it's all subjective! 🤣 What one person deems shit, another deems brilliant <spoiler alert>. Like I said... I am sure he'll not be caring one jot that somebody on an internet forum thinks he is shit when he likely lives a better life than you and I with a load of dough in the bank. Plus, ya seen his wife! Ooooft. He's got cringe factor for sure, I'll give you that.

Oh don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with getting it if you want it. But we all know that the material isn't that good so if the buying decision was just based on the song quality I don't think many would be interested. I think the majority are like you and they just want to complete the collection. Not shaming anybody😄

With you 100%. I'll likely stream the EP for an initial listen. But given I already know all 4 tracks, that I think 1 is utter utter dogshit, and the 2 live tracks are not exactly something to get me excited, I wouldn't bother my arse buying it.

Not really. I'd love to be a professional musician but I wouldn't wanna be DJ Ashba for all the money in the world tbh.

Suuuuuuuuuuure!!! 🤣🤣 I'm sure posting on an Internet forum more than makes up for it! 🤣

    Bingo.

There were aspects of DJ that I didn't hate.  He seemed like he cared about making GNR a better band (though, maybe not enough to learn his parts well enough).  But the incessant and transparent posing really did him in.

So much of DJ feels like an act.

    Would agree with that assessment.

  6. 2 hours ago, Towelie said:

So DJ "wins" because he toured the world and made a lot of money? Does it not matter a jot that he has no musicality and can't even complete the SCOM guitar solo without a more competant guitar player coming to the rescue handling the trickier bits? There are literally hundreds of YouTube guitarist more competent than Ashba. I guess it depends what you value in life, but as a musician, I don't think the amount of money in Ashba's bank account says anything about whether he "wins."

I'm sure he's not giving a flying fuck! 🤣 Let's be honest here... there's nobody talking about us on a public forum. He'll have a pretty good lifestyle, will have a pretty hot woman, and a few coppers in the bank... he lives a life we would likely take in a heartbeat.

And there is the Stockolm Syndrome level issue.

We know Rose has completed Silkworms/HardSkool/Atlas/Perhaps/General.

I've been telling everyone I think he has completed nothing else (fully).

I've been told I'm wrong countless times.

Now Slash has kindly announced they are gonna release the songs Axl has finished vocals for.

I explicitly state I believe they will be Atlas/Perhaps/General.

The same people are now saying even if they release Atlas/Perhaps/General, and absolutely nothing else, they'll still believe in all of these imaginary songs.

Aye, every man and their dug knows what you think pal! But there's no medal or victory lap for guessing something to be correct here. You've got a hunch, which may have some weight behind it, that's it. I don't think you're as mad as some folk think, but fuck me... you are bloody relentless!

I don't care about his personal life or "accomplishments", Ashba trying to insult someone far more relevant than himself for cool points only makes him look like an asshole.  Everyone sees through him, he's a waste of time with little to no talent to back his words up.

I don't think he did try to insult anybody. Read the interview! Given that Buckethead has cult status at best... DJ Ashba is likely more well known. I'm not particularly a fan of his but my word you seem a little bitter...

  9. 1 hour ago, Towelie said:

I wouldn't say that's something to brag about, buddy.

Well that's purely subjective really isn't it! I mean I haven't listened to that album in bloody years so can't even remember if it was any good or not. But point remains, very few people here have released multiple albums, toured the world, appeared on TV and earned a fuck a load of dough. So all in DJ Ashba, as cringey as he is, wins!

Also back on the original point... I agree with him. I don't think Buckethead was a good fit for GNR. An Axl solo project... perhaps a better fit. But I remember watching the 2002 MTV VMAs and being fucking horrified by what I saw (and heard). The change was too dramatic and ultimately failed as it didn't last.

There's absolutely no doubting BH's ability and he is outstandingly prolific, but possibly there in lies the problem... he was working with Axl Rose!

Shut the fuck up and go back into your hole of obscurity, Ashba.  Just go away.  You were nothing in GNR, and you continue to be nothing.

Whilst I am no DJ Ashba defender... chances are he's more minted, gets more poontang, and likely achieved more notoriety than your good self in life! Assuming you don't have writing credits on a Motley Crue album???!!!

Now, not so much. If you asked me one year ago, yes.

It all comes down to expectations. Your reaction to something is anchored to your expectations. I have never really expected much of Guns N' Roses. When Axl decided to reunite with Slash and Duff, I was sure that would be the end to new music. I expected it to be one cash grab tour and then Axl retiring and then maybe he would slowly work on releasing remaining songs from the CD sessions. I was obviously wrong but my point is that with this pretty negative background, it doesn't take much to give me a positive surprise.

Then there are those who always hoped for a reunion, that longed to see Axl and Slash back on stage, that thought Axl would deage and sing better and look thinner as soon as Slash was there, that they would start writing songs together and that Guns N' Roses would be the greatest band in the world again. I always argued against this, trying to adjust such wild expectations. Naturally, with this background it is hard to get positively surprised.

Going back to your question. To be surprised, something unexpected must happen, and I wouldn't be surprised if Perhaps and Atlas Shrugged, which were quite finished already back in 2001, are included among the songs to be released.

I like your vibe! That's really the best way of looking at it. I get where yer coming from now. Cheers! 👌🤘🙂

A positive surprise like another great song like Hard Skool being released? That chance is pretty good, I'd say.

Not to dampen your positivity one bit, but there is equally the same possibility of another Absurd! 😫😫 Hard Skool (in my opinion) is a decent enough track, but is it worth a 14 year wait or whatever it was... jury out on that for me. It's fine enough I guess but like so many other people have pointed out... piss poor production lets it down.

It's been discussed to death, but for some folk it will be a case of too little late from GNR.

Personally I don't see too much to get excited about with GNR these days. It is what it is.

Yeah, we’re going to have to get him an English translator.

Not sure it's a translator that's needed and more just an admission that this whole reunion gig has solely been about Slash and Duff reconnecting with Axl, and making some serious money. This was never about, and never will be about, becoming a functioning viable  creature unit again. If after 6 years of working together again and there's not one original new song to show for it, then it's a fair indication.

Whenever new music is brought up in interviews English becomes a foreign language to GNR members.

You mean Slash saying stuff like: "we are still trying to work out how to release stuff in this day and age". Whilst somehow managing to release 2 solo albums in the same period since being back in GNR! Yup it's an odd one that.

Yeah! Here they talk about Chinese as the greatest piece of music ever created. Move on , Slash is back so drink it in. We waited more than 20 years for this. Who cares if You like more a demo that You never suposed to hear i'm the first time.

Haha! I do agree that ChiDem is massively overhyped on GNR forums and the myth is almost greater than the reality. But then again it is totally subjective, right. And there are some really decent numbers on there! But agreed... it's no musical masterpiece to these ears either. That said, I reckon Better would make my top 10 GNR tracks easily.

Though they are by no means in the bracket, and I stress... I have a tendency to have a yearly listen to ChiDem much in the same way I do with St Anger.

Are the Stones working on new material or tinkering with 20+ year old leftovers?

I was taking the piss a bit but yes they were working on stuff the past few years. Though famously Tattoo You was made up of leftover tracks tarted up for release. The difference there though the leftovers were only 7 years old with the core band who recorded them still intact!

My ideal CD2 is an album with mostly Robin and Buckethead, with Duff parts and some Slash solos too. Wish this would be the case.

Aaaaaaaand there he is! 🤣 I'm sure they will cash in on a CD box set one day and you will be rewarded accordingly. Hopefully we'll get a track with Buckethead, Gary Sunshine, Dave Navarro, Brian May, Ron Thal, DJ Ashba, Slash, Paul Tobias, Robin Finck, and Richard Fortus all soloing, at the same time. Wish this could be the case!

Anyway better get myself back to The Stones forum. Heard they been working on new material. Time to post about my wish for unused Brian Jones parts to appear on a song or two.

See I can't stand the intro on the old version. Waaaaay too happy.

And I love CD because it is a very technical album

Hmmmm disagree there! It is hardly Dream Theatre or Tool! There's lots of technical guitar soloing but that's it. Let's not forget that the intro riff to the title track is pretty basic and common. There is literally nothing particularly technical about it all. Most of the chord structures on the album are fairly standard too like... e.g. Madagascar, There Was A Time, IRS. Nothing wrong that, but let's not paint it to be something it isn't!

But isn't that part of the life cycle of a fan? You start off being hugely invested in your favorite band, you "defend" it with your friends, act as a missionary to get others interested, spend a lot of time discussing the band and thinking about it; then years later you get less involved, you don't care as much and it takes a back seat to other things in your life. Whether you simply grow out of it or whether other things become more important (like career and family), I don't know. In that first period you would feel almost personally insulted when the band doesn't live up to expectations, in the later period it simply doesn't matter to you. So I am not saying it is wrong or abnormal to care so much that tacky merch affects you (and god knows it is shitty), it is entirely normal at a certain point in fandom. And I kind of like seeing that reaction here, because although I don't feel that way myself I probably recognize that I was like that, too, a long time ago and it is in a sense cute without meaning that in any condescending way. Then of course, some of us have invested so much in the band, emotionally, over the years that we still hang around and some of us still get emotionally affected by what this rock band of people we don't really know, do. Although that would be a bid sad because by now we should all have adjusted our expectations to the bare minimum. Personally, it's been many years since anything GN'R did bothered me. Don't get me wrong, I can still feel a short pang of disappointment if I feel the likelihood of new music shrinks (like when Axl decided to take Slash and Duff in again and go for the big reunion bucks), but all in all it is just irrelevant to what is important in my life.

You're absolutely correct in what you're saying here. I agree. Sadly I almost find GNR irritating now. Like they should've just called it a day on a high in 2017 or whatever. My level of investment has been low in context but when I saw them in 2017 in MSG, it peaked my interest levels again for sure. I've intermittently checked in here and there over the years (and possibly more through boredom during lockdown) but my expectation levels now are totally flat. So much so I sold ticket for Glasgow gig later this year. It's a shame how stale the reunion became.

And yeah, I cringe over the artwork and merch and over a thousand things in addition. No wait, I don't really cringe when I think about it. It is cringe-worthy, true, but I don't care enough to have that reaction; I am not personally invested in that sense where I feel ashamed about what the band does. I don't have that kind of ownership of it. I recognize it as bad, yes, but if I have any response at all it is more likely just a chuckle. It doesn't matter to me.

Aye... on point there again! Touche.

  21. 6 minutes ago, SoulMonster said:

Isn't that pretty much the consensus around here, haha?

Personally, I can't get frustrated about such things, it is just a rock band. It doesn't affect me. Additionally, I kind of expected nothing since UYI and everything we've got, CD, tours and entertainment, has just been a welcome bonus. The glass was half full decades ago.

I can't argue with what you said there! Good point, we'll presented. 🙂👌🤟👍🙂

Possibly some frustration comes from the sheer brazen cash grab of the past few years. And don't even get me started on the whole "we're f'n back" slogan... it is nauseating and embarrassing at best. I like the early GNR a lot and occasionally even listen to it! But when I see what it is today... I just cringe! It's difficult to accept them now as a serious band. Metallica are their peers and look how they do things. Night and day difference.
