I think it wasn't one thing that caused the band to implode and it seems it wasn't just one man responsible. Gn'R was the kind of band that was like a ticking bomb from the start and they kinda wanted different things artistically and in their own lives.

Izzy probably wanted for it to not continue to be ridiculously huge and with no internal band bullshit as his VR stint demonstrated, Slash wasn't interested when it came to straying too far from classic hard rock and Axl took over and became controlling and isolated himself. It wasn't like The Stones where you had certain principals that were agreed upon by the band members who had a say in how the band was going to operate.

at least all the gunners are still alive and the 3 of them found a way to get along, even if it took 20 years and some compromises had to be made.

    Interesting assessment.

I think after illusions they should have done what slash wanted to do, as getting back to basics,  was a straight up hard rock record, one ballad. Then after that album we go into potentially some of the CD songs that could of worked with the illusions lineup (the blues, CD, TWAT, better, CITR)  because to me, these have an illusions kind of feel. I firmly think what we got as part of the CD leaks last year would have worked with the illusions lineup. Shit, axl didnt know about pro tools, and drum loops until sorum showed him. Had the band stayed together we could have had illusions , hard rock record followup in 97 and axl could then branch out and record the songs that could have been potentially the CD intentions, released early 00s.

I call BS.  They were in control of releasing new music, and keeping the band together.  Other bands were performing with orchestras etc and still managed to live.  These are all just excuses, and sadly thats the only thing this band has kept consistent  through out the years.  They are great at creating them

Yep, and by the late 90s  metallica was doing it as part of their S&M album.

I’m really just curious if there’s any tracks that haven’t made an appearance in the last 20 years that could reasonably be considered as still on the table. So many deep Bon tracks got played across the SUL, 2003, and ROB tours I just don’t know what else we might be able to expect them to dig up that hasn’t been played on any of those tours. As far as I know, Ride On and Touch Too Much are the only ones that hadn’t been played prior to their respective airings in 2001 and 2016. Or had Get It Hot never been played before 2000?

The only Bon songs not played anytime during the last 20 years are:
    Baby Please Don't Go *
    She's Got Balls
    Little Lover *
    Stick Around *
You Ain't Got A Hold On Me *
    Soul Stripper *
    Love Song *
    Show Business *
It's A Long Way To The Top *
    Rock N' Roll Singer *
    Rocker
Can I Sit Next To You Girl *
    School Days *
    Ain't No Fun ^
There's Gonna Be Some Rockin' ^
    Squealer ^
    Big Balls ^
    Jailbreak
    Love At First Feel ^
    Go Down
    Overdose ^
    Crabsody In Blue ^
    Down Payment Blues
    Gimme A Bullet *
    Cold Hearted Man ^
    Kicked In The Teeth *
    Girls Got Rhythm
    Walk All Over You *
    Beating Around The Bush ^
    Love Hungry Man ^
    Night Prowler ^

    * - Never played after Bon's death
    ^ - Never played live

I just don't know how many of those songs I can see getting played again. I suppose the stuff played on the Ballbreaker tour (Go Down, Down Payment Blues, and Girls Got Rhythm) might have a chance. But none of the songs remaining on that list seem like viable options.

Interesting i thought jailbreak and "long way" would be staples when they tour in Aus.

Bruh. I have heard these boomers say countless times they don't want new music or they don't care about new music. It's one thing to just be all, "I'm stuck in 1987 forever." But it's another to actively say you hope they don't release new music as if it somehow erases their past work. These fans literally want to go hear "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" at every concert for the rest of their lives and relive that half decade of the '80s/early '90s for the rest of their time.

I can sort of get on board with that line of thinking if the band play a shitload of deep cuts, and zero covers but thats not possible.

I must admit that I can’t think of too many changes that I’ve noticed - he does do something odd at the start of Paradise City which sounds weird - misses a snare hit or something.

Im all for Iconic songs being faithful to the source material....although I do get why some folk would want to change it from time to time too - ‘just to freshen it up’.

Re Sorum - I think a lot of people forget how good a drummer he is because of all the attention his ‘ego’ gets.

Yep, i know people say his playing feels robotic but to me, his drumming on the illusion albums suited the songs.

Nope, he didn't left on his own. He was fired because of his drug issues and a fist fight with Mal.

The fist fight stuff i didnt know!. I always thought phil left or was asked to leave and the main contention was the direction of the music for the followup post BIB.

That’s interesting. I dunno - like you I was listening to stuff pre-reunion 09-12 and he sounded bang on the money. Not just tonally but also ‘locked in’ better?

Ill give him the kudos for not fucking up locomotive. But in terms of skill him and sorum seem miles apart. I just wonder if he feels more pressure on himself because of duff and slash. The previous members of nuguns didnt have the same status in the music community as slash. In nuguns the only person frank had to please was axl, but now there are extra bosses to please , duff and slash. So maybe frank just feels more internal  pressure.

My issues though is that he would do things on the kit that wernt needed or required.  An extra cymbal hit that just isnt required. Just stick to how it sounds on the record.

Phil Rudd is the problem. He didn't wanted play to the songs from Fly on the Wall to The Razors Edge. He was forced to play Thunderstruck regulary but that's it.

Really?. That's petty and really shit. You would think he would have no issues , considering he left voluntarily from when simon wright joined.

Variations of the band still tour. As original members pass away or are no longer up to touring, they've tried to substitute other people who played with Elvis and so on.

I got the see it in person 3 times about 20 years ago and I gotta tell you, it was fucking amazing. I saw it in an arena twice and once in a theater. All 3 shows really made you feel like Elvis himself was there.

Good they did the shows justice, rather than the embarassing Ronnie James Dio hologram thing Ronnies wife was involved in.

The actual tour promoter said that it’s an “all new show” but the same old songs.

So this translates to that there’ll be even more annoying shit going on in the screens behind the band, to distract you from how shit they sound :D

As long as its not the same setlist with the covers again, and no CD songs ,  ill be down for whatever.

  11. Does elvis band still tour. I remember a few years ago the band were rehearsing for shows with a backdrop of elvis and didnt know if they were still doing this.

Charted higher too. But no, Brian says it's a stinker to sing! We need a change.org petition to bring Moneytalks back to its rightful place in the set! I don't care if Angus tunes down to A for it.

Whew. Needed to get that out.

I dont buy the whole difficult to sing. I personnaly think some songs on BIB take more effort to sing than "money". It was a well charted single, and a favourite amonv the fanbase, so i dont know why they dont bring it back in some vocal form.

this is so typical of this forum and such a BS thread.  shorter setlist, less shows.  period.  he plays for 3 hrs and tours like mad.

he is still a god of a live vocalist when he is on and better when he is off than people here comparing him to early 90s/2005/acdc etc want to admit

If the 18and 19 NITL selects have shown hes more off than on.

He could easily change the setlist to focus on his lower register, because his whispering grandma/mickey mouse helium voice wont cut it.

He sang excellent with ACDC but shit with his own band.

  14. 5 hours ago, Gordon Comstock said:

There's no reason other than stubbornness for the quality of later NITL shows. The guy could be singing Bad Obsession, Down On The Farm, You Ain't The First, Pretty Tied Up and others every night while still sounding like Axl Rose. He could do the Estranged intro in his speaking voice instead of that stupid fucking "whispering grandma" thing he does. The band could be playing relatively great 2~ hour shows. But he has no business singing Better or Rocket Queen or whatever every night just so the band can say they "play a 3+ hour show."

This. Plus lose a good 30kgs. No reason why he cant.

I've been revisiting some older AC/DC material for the first time in a while. A few thoughts...

High Voltage (Australian version) is the most interesting album they've released, simply because it doesn't fit the AC/DC mold. There's a few hints at where the band is heading - namely She's Got Balls and Stick Around, but most of it is a band that's very much still finding their sound and image. Love Song is cheesy as fuck, but it's not the worst song in their catalogue (Hell, it's not even the worst song on the album - that's Little Lover if you ask me). Baby Please Don't Go and Show Business are some nice bluesy numbers. It's really amazing how much the band evolved between here and TNT in a matter of months.

I'll fight anyone that doesn't think The Razor's Edge era is the band's live peak, at least in the Brian era. AC/DC Live is such a phenomenal live album - every band member is firing on all cylinders. Brian sounds like he's just chewed an entire back of razors and laying down some of the meanest vocals he's ever recorded, Slade pushing the tempos to breakneck speeds, the backing vocals from Cliff and Mal sounding extra gritty, and I love Angus' slightly heavier, more distorted tone in that era. The fact that it's a compilation live album actually does that lineup more justice because it shows it wasn't a one-off stellar gig they did.

Agree about TRE. Im glad they released moneytalks as a single. I felt it was a stronger single than thundrrstruck.

Taking my general impression here of Australia, formed only by visits so very far from authorative of course, the country doesn't get as many visits from bands compared to Europe, and sort of makes the most of what it does get.

Another impression I have (and I would stress here I really don't want to cause offence) is that Australia has quite a 'retro' attitude to entertainment products. A lot of British comedy acts, long past being of interest/selling anything in Britain, end up touring a lot in Australia for instance I've noticed. I get the impression thing are a bit different over there. I noticed UK bands playing on my visits there that were filling venues of sizes they haven't played in the UK for years.

I would imagine these things feed in a bit? I'm not saying there weren't some younger people at GNR gigs over here, but they were noticeable by being a big exception.

Your probably not wrong on a few things said.

Australia falls into trends. For an example what is big in NA usually makes its way to Australia. Whether its artists or whatever.

The UK not so much. Yes, alot of the comedy movies from the UK where hits in Aus due to the fact that the UK and Australia share the same sort of dry sense of humour. Thats why i can laugh at Ricky Gervasis comments at the Golden Globes or whatever the acting awards was earlier in the year where americans in the audience couldnt "get" what he was saying, i certainly could!

American comedy i find to tryhard to be funny.

Getting back on topic, we had alot of UK bands such as Def Leppard who didnt tour here until the GFC. They sold out playing here that they were back here 6 months later!.

We do usually get the odd washedup UK bands, and even UK stars appearing in certain reality shows. Yes we dont get alot of bands touring here, as distance and AUD conversion was never an enticing reason to visit. But i think thats starting to change.

Well, the gigs are hardly packing in the youths these days!

The younger generation would be truly horrified if they even scratched the surface of some of the lyrics/behaviour/attitudes.

The word 'problematic' would be the tip of the iceberg to a woke generation looking to 'cancel' artists who even express a mildly controversial opinion!. Good grief if they read some of the things GNR used to do and say, let alone hear some of the lyrics!

Sorry, I think GNR are an oldies act now I'm afraid. Time has moved on.

There will always be a few young people who idolise the past and like the idea of creating their own version of it in the present though. You see it in some of these bizaare 'cuddly Axl' homemade artwork things and how some elements like to present an image of him being a super-cute, puppy lovin' nice old father type. People love to fetishize the past and make it into something they find palatable. They invent their own truth, as you can only do with the past.

But GNR as a young people's band is a real reach, by any stretch of the imagination!

Gnr are very big in Australia.

The 2017 Sydney show i saw, had people in various age groups. The one thing with GNR like the stones is that the age of fans is across the generational divide.

So for the Sydney 2017 show night one the age differemce was young people 14/15 all the way to people in their 50s. Make no mistake the reason i feel for the shows being a sellout when they toured here was because of Slash.

Where i was in the crowd was a bunch of 16 year olds who knew every lyric of the songs that were played. I was surprised. People in their late teens the same as well.

This is the same with maiden and black sabbath who have toured here in the past. Its difficult to fathom.

There were some young people in the crowd that only knew the standard hits, but also from the CD songs as well. So i guess there was a mixture.

Its interesting that this same age group i also see whenever SMKC tour as well. Ive always been interested in asking those in their say mid teens how they got into GNR and to a certain extent,  SMKC.Especially if they are attendees that i could tell they knew more than the standard hits.

Guns here just have a huge following across the different age groups.

I personally think certain young people are interested in the classic bands, and can separate whats good and whats shit. I think GNR will always, especially here, their interest among the age of people will never wane :shrugs:

  18. CD should have been released in 06 which i have read BH was pestering axl to do.

Should that have happened they could have released CD 09/10. But the question is would we still have ended up with the reunion in 2016?.

From Downzys comment where axl was planned to release a new album in 2016, i would have to ask why?.

Tthe band were playing literally theatres. What buzz would a new album do, with the nuguns lineup had nuguns dtayed together?.

The reunion was for the money. Axl had a band in 06 with musicianship that could have helped him acheive whatever vision he had that woukd have shaken the monkey off his back with the old line up.

Im no CD or nuguns fan, but would have alot of respect for axl if he shot out 2 albums from 06, with the band he had at the time. In 06 if he would have contemplated the reunion it would have been a strictly business decision. Which would have been a stale experience for the fans.

I think 06 was for axl one of those sliding door moments. He didnt see a new album through and he really fucked it up.

I wouldnt have a clue how much axl gets from royalties etc but i bet axl would under californian law, pay a hefty land tax bill for his malibu home that playing theatres, and normal touring expenses, wouldnt cover with how much the band would have been making from 2013 to 14.

I'd much prefer the honest approach.....but I think if they were totally honest with people, it would be the end of the band.

All Slash needs to say is "we are working on new stuff" which could mean anything.

it could mean working on a new setlist, working on a new stage setup, working on rehearsing old songs  and polish as a new song.

The band really dont need to do an album. They could add some deep cuts to the setlist ( think about you, Your Crazy) rotate MM and OTGM, Yesterday,  and add a " new unreleased" song (Hardschool) like SOYL. A song from their old days and market as a "new and unreleased " song. The casuals wouldnt have a clue.

Like SOYL and Hardschool  its interesting that the bands so called new songs are just rehashed old ones. They could keep doing this (Just another Sunday, crash diet).

The band could get away and still sell tickets doing the above. No album required.
