The more I listen to HardSkool, the more boring it gets. Whereas the more I listen to Absurd, the more I surprisingly like it.

Hardskool is like that crush you’ve chased your whole life who you finally get to date, only to realize that they’re not actually as cool as you thought they were, whereas Absurd is like that one friend you’ve had since childhood who you suddenly realize was your true love this whole time.

By the way - i actually completely agree with you!

I do actually, it has a mean riff, but it's a rather unorthodox song for a first single, not as radiofriendly as Aeroplane or My Friends. but I personally like that about it. But it wasn't the best first single choice, and I think the same about this new song. The more I listen to it, the more it sounds like a B-song. Not bad, but for a first new song in 6 years it's kinda underwhelming.

I felt the same about ''Adventures of Raindance Maggie'' but I ended up loving ''I'm With You''.

    Phew that's a relief.

I agree with all you've said.

Black summer is an underwhelming start but i still have hope for the rest of the album.

I've been reading a lot of negative reactions already on other platforms, but I think it's impossible to live up to many people's expectations anyway because this is what the fans have been waiting for since they announced John's return in late 2019.

I'm not worried, a lot of their first singles weren't that great in my opinion. Warped. The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie. Dani California (fan favourite, I believe, but I consider many other songs on that album a lot better).

edit; I'm worried that he didn't mention 'California' though in the lyrics, unless I didn't pay enough attention...

    You don't like warped!?!

    :o

My thinking is that Axl needs Slash way more than Slash needs Axl. If Slash wasn't there GnR would not fill stadiums. Slash has continued to release music since leaving GnR in '94 and tour those albums. Axl hasn't.

Axl's vocals are what made me a fan back in the 80's but Slash is what drew me back when they reunited.

If Axl wasn't there GnR would not fill stadiums either.

I just like those type of songs, I also like Anything Goes from AFD when not many do.

    Sorry mate.

    I was being a dickhead.

I'm a big believer in liking the music you like and not caring what anyone else says.

    I like anything goes too.

I'm sure there's a lot of music i like that you might dislike!

Doesn't touch You're A Lie WOF or even Driving Rain to be honest. I'm more into the deep tracks though anyway like Sugar Cane or Dirty Girl. Call Off The Dogs is the one I'm waiting to hear on this album, sounds like it's gonna be a quick badass song.

You must be the only person on the planet that likes sugar cane!

I'd rather listen to William Shatner's rocket man.

I'm actually assuming you're a troll because I'm finding it very hard to believe anyone could find anything redeeming about that song.

  8. I love it!

I also love absurd. Like the loose punky feel.

I wish duffs vocals were a touch higher and Axl's sat back in the music a bit more but small issues.

Just so happy to have new music from guns after all this time.

    I'm desperate for more!

Must admit Mmy favourite version of hardskool might be  the soundcheck with vocals pasted over the top.

Really gotten in to that version.

This is much better than the leaked version though.

Looks like Josh is a touring member for Pearl Jam now. I believe he also plays on Eddie Vedder's new solo record. Kinda cool of them to embrace him like that after the Peppers canned him.

How many friggin guitarists do they need!?!

I guess the poster was trying to say as a guitar player they couldn't hear what She was doing with the guitar sound. What I'll say is, she isn't going to be playing the guitar parts for every song all the way through! she probably just doubles a part here and there I don't think she's about to pull out a keytar and take over Slash solos. Given the last few weeks maybe I shouldn't say anything so definite though😅

I definitely wouldn't rule out the keytar.....

As you say what she is doing is very subtle - but I think that's the whole idea!

I'm a guitar player and I guarantee that Melissa is not "making guitars sound thicker." What does that even mean?

She's dancing, singing some backing vocals and adding a keyboard line here and there. Otherwise, she's triggering samples that could easily be done by a computer without a human flailing about on stage (not that they're even needed...) There is definitely not a single person at a concert that would miss her contributions or lack thereof.

She is there because Axl wants her there and this is the Axl Rose show.

Dizzy I could understand. The Illusions had a lot of piano parts, so it made sense that they needed someone else rather than having Axl sitting behind a piano all night. But then we got Teddy as well....?!

Like I told my dentist the other day "I'm a guitar player and I guarantee you I don't need a filling"

How does being a guitar player make you an expert on keyboards??

What was your guarantee by the way considering Melissa is quoted as sying she is "thickening the guitar sounds"?

So do the Chili Peppers. They make no secret of having a backing musician who plays keyboards on a few songs and he isn't offstage either.

They have him on stage for the songs that obviously contain keyboard - like dark necessities.

There was another bloke behind stage for tell me baby and some other songs.

Also there is a difference between being onstage and being considered a member of the band.

On the UYI albums you could say that Dizzy was not needed. He has some writing credits on CD though. He's needed on tour for playing the piano parts, so that Axl can be the frontman without having to sit on the piano for many songs.

Melissa's role is adding effects, making guitars sound thicker, playing backing tracks, etc. Most bands have someone for these things, they just have them hidden behind the stage.

    Exactly!

Saw the chili peppers at a smaller venue a few years back and could see 2 guys on keyboards out the back.

Remember specifically seeing a guy playing along to the chorus guitar line on Tell Me Baby.

GnR just have this person out on stage.
