  1. Seriously, I think you're the only person on here that would argue that Toronto has better crowds than Hamilton.

Weird. I keep reading what I wrote and can't find where I said that.

I've got no issue with them playing Hamilton *as well as* Toronto, but *instead of* Toronto is just silly. It's like playing Jersey but avoiding NYC. Oh wait.....

But someone brought up the NBA lockout business and that may very well have played a part in this. It just seems odd that on this tour they seem to be avoiding the largest markets.

That was me, and it wouldn't surprise me. Especially the way they've been rolling the shows out slowly makes me think the venue bookings have been very fluid. That and the tour shirts saying Toronto not Hamilton. I wouldn't be shocked if that's why MSG hasn't been announced.

That said, they could easily do another U.S. leg the way things are going, and throw in some canuck dates, in 2012. There are still lots of U.S. markets that don't have shows and the reviews have been pretty solid so far.

  2. The tour shirts say Toronto Nov 28th, not Hamilton, so perhaps Toronto was the original plan and it couldn't happen? Might have been due to the NBA lockout (the league has been dragging shit out maybe the venue had a hold on it that night, even if the calendar says it's open that night there could have been a hold). Also, yes Toronto would have been a much bigger crowd but Hamilton has good crowds for rock and I think Axl made some sort of comment on that so...

Vancouver just really needed a show.

And lets me honest - GN'R deserve a HUGE thanks for that Canadian tour, very few bands ever do that! Pearl Jam, White Stripes, a few others (plus our local acts).

I'd love to see GN'R play some festivals here next summer. Sarnia Bayfest? KISS, STP, etc. have done it. I just wanna see GN'R outdoors, in warm weather!

  3. Sigh. A lot of people in this thread don't go to many shows. So, some points:

End stage vs. Center Stage: End stage is far more common. Seats behind the stage and at the sides are not used. The floor does *not* make up for it for two reasons: there are fire regulations regarding the number of people that can be on the floor, and arena bowls have usually two (or even three) levels and hold more people that the floor.

If an arena is 15,000 for hockey, it may only be 10,000 for an end stage concert.

I've seen end stage shows sell behind the stage a few times - Pearl Jam did this for PJ20 at the gig I was at. They were nice enough to turn around and play a song for the guys behind them, and they didn't have screens or a lot of gear, so it worked, but it's generally not great for the fans back there, especially if the tickets are still full price (they may or may not be, Pearl Jam's were).

Now, center stage - not as pyro friendly, you need to really be able to fill the arena (all bowls and floor), screens to go on all sides, etc.

Attendance: GN'R drew 5000+ in Florida? Cool. Guess what, I saw Stone Temple Pilots on the Between the Lines tour when they had a new album out in stores, 2010, and GN'R in 2010/2011 is outdrawing them with a 3 year old CD. Both bands have a legion of fans and a messy past (for different reasons). In town, GN'R drew basically what Iron Maiden did (14,000) and they're a pretty solid touring act. Now, I'm in Toronto. Rock sells here hence the Canada tour. Down south? Subtract a few fans in a lot of markets. The economy is crap, and there's more competition for entertainment dollars. Then go to Europe, South America, Asia... rock acts will draw even more there. It's the reality of the American music/concert industry. Last year was one of the worst years for touring in recent memory.

Finally - just enjoy the damn tour!

  4. i would venture to say that the first amount is the total revenue generate from ticket sales, # of tickets sold/# of tickets available, don't know/don't know, highest list price, lowest list price

The numbers you aren't sure of (like the 1/0, 2/0) Are Shows, Sellouts if I recall

Note for the Mexican shows listed 31,912 /39,124 - they combined the tickets instead of doing the shows separate, but still have it as 2 shows no sellouts, but given they were only a few hundred tickets shy of the max I'm surprised the first show wasn't a sellout. If it wasn't it was pretty damn close. Nice $$ for two shows also!

  5. Actually about 5 different outlets ran that story and photo. They all mention the gig so really it does promote the shows in FL.

More of the same. Just getting exposure like this - positive fun blurbs - is good for the tour.

Also DJ may be the "new" guy still but I wouldn't say he's lesser known due to his own following, relationship with Monster, and MC/Sixx:AM etc. He's exactly who they need making the rounds since Axl isn't a big fan of the press.

  6. fuck after I bought Detroit tickets, Now I either have to sell my Detroit tickets and go to Hamilton since it's 20 minutes from me or go to both.....hmmm

You simply go to both :)

lol well... $$ for some ;) I am hoping that if they do a Toronto date I can hit up both Hamilton and Toronto but it'll be a last minute thing. Time to work some OT!

    Congrats Vancouver!! :)

  8. Akl Rose is the only singer in the history of RNR, which is a completely new band contained much of the glory of old band.James Hatfield and Jon Bon Jovi without the original members of their bands would not be able to fill arenas, but would be played in clubs in USA.Sa On the other hand to sell 10,000 tickets is definitely a success.

and don't forget GNR filled stadiums and arenas across the globe in last two years.

    What about Dave Mustaine?

Him also...also he dosn't get much hell about lineup changes like Axl does.

I think a lot of it has to do with the sound of the music. Megadeth has always had that core sound that sounds like Megadeth regardless of the lineup. Regardless of anyone's views on past band members in GNR, they did help contribute a specific sound to the band. I always maintained that if the new GNR material sounded more like old Guns the public wouldn't care as much (but then again I don't care about public opinion anyway lol). The new lineup is fantastic but it definately has a different overall musical sound that barely resembles old-Guns whereas Megadeth has always sounded like Megadeth

yes, Mustaine is Megadeth. it really does not matter who plays with him, as long as they can play. Though Friedman is still highly missed. If CD was more like old GNR it would have been different, new members yes but sounding like good old GNR, but it was new sound and new members, too much for some people. Megadeth did Risk, as much as I like the album, it`s not really Megadeth....same thing kinda happened with CD.

I don't fully buy the "CD isn't enough like old GN'R" because it sounds pretty much like Use Your Illusion 3 at times. There Was a Time could have been right on there. Even Catcher, Madagascar, Street of Dreams, This I Love... maybe even IRS. Sure there are some tracks with different styles but I don't think it's that radically different.

Also - Mustaine took some heat after Youthenasia, the albums after that started really losing it, lost their edge, they needed to get the thrash back. Megadeth is a great example though. So are:

    The Smashing Pumpkins

    Alice in Chains

    Hole

    Bush

    Iron Maiden

    Wolfmother

    Evanescence

And probably a ton of other bands who have lost most of their members. GN'R was just the biggest.

All those bands still have the primary songwriters(Corgan, Rossdale, Amy Lee, Cantrell). Here is another piece I wrote which details the major difference between those bands and Guns:

Alot of those bands mentioned with different line up changes still retain the main songwriter/s. Dave Mustaine pretty much wrote 95% of Megadeth material, from the start. Billy Corgan also wrote 95% of the Smashing Pumpkins material from day one. Jerry Cantrell wrote the bulk of Alice in Chains songs(most of the instrumental, and probably 50% of the lyrics). Same with Lemmy of Motorhead, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters etc etc. Axl was never the main songwriter, that honor mostly goes to Izzy. The fact that Axl also did not play an instrument in addition to vocals hurts as well, as all the aforementioned individuals played guitar/bass and wrote lyrics, therefore are a pivotal part of the sound of the band. The key member or members still function in those bands. The same cannot be said about current day Guns N' Roses.

All those aforementioned artists wrote most of the lyrics and instrumentation for their songs, so the main essence of the band remained intact. This was not the case in Guns N' Roses. Guns N' Roses was the sum of all it's parts. Even Adler's loose drumming was significant to the sound of those songs. Duff's basslines were melodic and stood out in a time where most bassists would simply follow the rhythm guitar. Slash's wild bluesy solos were full of passion and complimented Axl's piercing vocals perfectly over Stradlin's hooks. You are now left with 1/5th of that sound. It's different when you compare it to say Megadeth, where Dave Mustaine always did the vocals, lyrics and rhythm guitar, and about 40% of the solos.

I'll give you the Bush and Smashing Pumpkins examples, but you are wrong about Evanescence and Alice In Chains. Layne Staley co-wrote many songs with Jerry Cantrell and wrote on his own "Hate to Feel" and "Angry Chair", the latter was a single.

You are dead wrong about Evanescence. Amy Lee only wrote one song on her own on the debut album and three on her own on the second album. Actually, the Evanescence example is a very good one of a singer that doesn't get nearly the shit Axl does for continuing on with multiple new iterations of her band.

    Ali

Layne only wrote the lyrics to Alice in Chains and maybe some of the instrumentation at best. Cantrell actually handled at least 80% of the instrumentation and a good deal(possibly 40-50%) of the lyrics and vocals(writing the lyrics and contributing lead vocals as well) to Alice in Chains.

Evanescence's debut album Fallen has Amy Lee's name on ALL the songs as a writer. More so than any other member of the band at the time. She also contributed piano and organ(which were/are a integral part of the Evanescence sound), Axl only really contributed vocals and lyrics to Appetite(unless you want to count a whistle and the minimal synthesizer to Paradise City). Things changed on UYI, but it was no longer the original line up so it is a moot point.

Again, I have nothing against Axl using the name, nor am I pissing on him and harping about a reunion, I would much prefer Chidem II. But Guns are a unique example. They were the sum of their parts. Every member had their own niche and role which they excelled at and was crucial to the sound.

Anyone can look up writing credits up on Wikipedia: you missed the point -entirely-

Keep in mind that Layne's voice, which was unique, and the way he handled harmonies with Cantrell was a HUGE part of AiC's success, as was his soul as an artist. I was a huge AiC fan, and I've seen them live with DuVall: it's not the same, but I accept it. But it was never the lyrics that made AiC huge even if their blatant honesty about drugs drew people in, was the vocal harmony I mentioned first and formost. Something that Jerry has tried to recreate now, with some limited success (listen to Rooster live now, it's nowhere near the same, but the bands new stuff is solid). So, it doesn't really matter, to the casual listener, who wrote what, or who played what instrument.

Same -would- go for GN'R except Slash had a pretty big public profile, and maintained that right through to today by getting his name out there in projects like Guitar Hero. But I've had people not realize There Was a Time was new Guns - they thought it was from UYI. Those are casual fans, not diehards so...

Now, your contention that Axl only contributed lyrics and a whistle is baseless and contradicted by Slash's own words (in his formula for who contributed most to AFD he had Axl on top followed by Izzy), and it's been pointed out time and again that Axl will come up with music simply by humming it out, and on piano - remember November Rain was in progress before AFD ever came out. We have no idea who really did what on any of the songs, so it's pointless speculation, but really - the entire line up thing is old. Lots of bands go through changes. GN'R is not the first just one of the biggest.

  10. So the media is spinning this one as negatively as possible...

Josie on Edge102 in Toronto was on about this "horrible" video on the net of Axl making fun of Slash, and how he's a meanie, and does it because he's fat.

I kid you not, that was her perspective. Don't know if she even actually watched it because she barely seemed to know what was up with it. Then made a hypocrite of herself.

  11. This was posted today? With approx 17?

There's at least 22 shows announced so far... just did a quick count.

And the reason they're waiting may very well be the NBA. The league will get first crack at dates in December *if* the season gets underway. They are going into mediation. I'm guessing they can't book something like MSG til they know if/when the Knicks will be playing.

  12. I'm sure he's dropped a couple of pounds since Rio now that he's back on tour, but it's nothing drastic, maybe 10 pounds. Still, he wasn't overweight to begin with.

Haha, it's physically impossible to lose 10 pounds in a week. I mean, scientifically impossible because of how much energy you can extract from a pound of fat and how much energy you need in that time period. Some might say they have lost very much in a week, but it is almost always due to the loss of water when not eating as much that will bind the water in your body.

Anyways, he is clearly not fat but a bit bloated in the face. That's all. The big problem here is THE CLOTHES! They fit him terribly which makes him come off much worse than he should. All of his bandmates have well-fitting, nice rock clothes. He should take a look at them! Axl has got ill-fitting jeans, too large in both directions, a jacket that he wears terribly, a large t-shirt sticking out from underneath it in a bad way, and an unflattering bandana. And that hair is not doing him any favors. And the mustache... He could just go for shopping and a haircut when he has a day off and look ten times better. Axl Rose always had STYLE goddammit!

If he wouldn't have been out of breath in song one of the concert, nobody would have made a big deal about his weight.

Yes they would. It's a superficial world and Axl has showed off a perfect body through a lot of his career. And also, people like to talk shit about the man.

It may be impossible to lose the fat, but it's not impossible to lose 10lbs in a week. Your body carries all sorts of excess weight. Prize fighters and MMA fighters (think UFC) cut tons of weight just before weigh-ins to make their weight class. Dehydrate, laxitive/cleansers, drastic calorie reduction, etc. Not great for the body though but you can take off some pudge pretty quick (you just won't keep it off).

However, the real answer is that the media picked an unflattering photo, and some tabloid added some photoshop "magic" apparently in one case.

  13. http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=164490

The publicist for GUNS N' ROSES has released the following official statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET regarding the reports that the band was two hours late in taking the stage at this year's Rock In Rio festival on October 2 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil:

"GUNS N' ROSES would like to set the record straight on Rock In Rio. The festival's inadequate production and the downpour of rain delayed the event. Anyone who was there knows that SYSTEM OF A DOWN did not leave the stage until close to 1:15 in the morning. SYSTEM's extensive stage production did not finish coming offstage until 1:45 a.m. GN'R's production was up and ready to go at 2:15 a.m. Axl [Rose, GUNS N' ROSES lead singer] got to the venue before 1 a.m. and he came ready to go onstage. The inadequate cover of the Rock In Rio stage caused a further delay when the soundboard went down due to water damage and was replaced as quick as possible. GN'R walked onstage at 2:40 a.m. and played for two-and-a-half hours in the pouring rain. GN'R would never seek to intentionally disrespect anyone, especially their fans."

    that's immediately contradicted by this:

"Love it Hate it Accept it Debate it — You want 8 o'clock shows go find F-R-I-E-N-D-S or hit a cinema somewhere…or you wanna be informed go catch the 10-o'clock news.. this is Rock N' Roll! Treat yourself don't cheat yourself thinking you're gonna go to school or work or whatever you 'normally' do the next day. Oh and remember before you get high and never want to come down. 'you can have anything you want but you better not take it from me!' This is Guns N’ Roses and when the time is right the stage will ignite. Looking forward to sharing that with rockers soon!"

    Bulls**t.

There’s nothing remotely “rock n’ roll” about treating your paying fans with such disrespect, nor is the quality of an artist’s fans based, in any way, on the responsibilities they face in their lives outside of a concert.

This is simply childish, ego-driven, controlling, age-old macho bulls**t posturing by a guy who has so much money that no one will challenge, or question, his stance on the stage timing issue.

    Well, almost no one.

Axl can show up on stage when he “has to,” it appears: following the release of the ill-fated “Chinese Democracy,” GNR played four shows in Asia at the end of 2009, and the band hit the stage for each show at pretty reasonable times, as follows:

    Dec 11/09 – Taipei County Stadium – Tapei, Taiwan – START @ 8:35 pm

    Dec 13/09 – Olympic Arena – Seoul, South Korea – START @ 9:25 pm

    Dec 16/09 – Osaka Dome – Osaka, Japan – START @ 9:00 pm

    Dec 19/09 – Tokyo Dome – Tokyo, Japan – START @ 6:40 pm

So, why is that all shows since the Asian leg have started ridiculously late? What is it about doing business with the Asian promoters - Taiwanese company Brokers Brothers Herald, Ltd. (BBH), Korea’s All Access Entertainment, and Japanese business Hayashi International Promotion Co. Ltd. (H.I.P.) - that made Axl get on stage well before midnight local time, when he doesn’t do it for anyone else?

Let’s call Axl’s long-running position on concert start times what it really is: unprofessional.

And, by extension, the band members who make up GNR these days, and the promoters who do business with Axl, are guilty by association.

If Live Nation – headed by former GNR manager Irving Azoff - can’t get a contract together with Axl for the upcoming US tour that includes strict guidelines for reasonable start times, and/or heavy financial penalties for not following them, then they, too, should be held responsible to the fans.

    But they won’t.

There’s no rocking the boat when everyone involved continues to ride the financial gravy train.

I saw GNR in Toronto in January of 2010; many fans were forced to walk out of the arena around 1:00 a.m. to catch the last bus/subway/train home so they could get to school/work, etc. the next morning. There were no refunds for fans getting an incomplete show because they were responsible people who were forced to leave at a time when the concert should have already been finished; in Toronto’s case, that was around 2:00 a.m. There was almost a 3-hour wait between the last opening band and Axl’s 11:25 p.m. start time…that’s way past absurd.

Since the current tour started, it’s safe to say that more GNR headlines have been about Axl’s disrespect for fans than about the actual quality of the show. Dublin. Reading. Leeds. Remember the reports out of Townsville, Australia last December? The Daily Telegraph attributed the 2-hour “delay” to Axl enjoying a “cool movie in his hotel room and he was digging it.”

And who pays for Rose’s actions? Fans. People who have to get up and go to work, or school, the next day, because that’s what REAL LIFE is all about.

When will the madness stop? Only when fans stop buying tickets to this circus.

While Axl continues living in his fantasy world (does he really think “Friends” is still on at 8:00 p.m.???), there are no penalties for his selfishness, and when people are on Axl’s payroll, you have to believe no one is allowed to question his absurd stance on issues like this one.

In other words, there’s no democracy in Axl’s Chinese Democracy.

The TTC extended their hours in Toronto for the GN'R gig. There were notices at the show. There were also alternates, like cabs. Or simply being aware of the band you're going to see.

If, should they ever make the playoffs again, the Leafs go into a 5th overtime period, do you leave early? Do you blame the team for not scoring sooner?

Concerts don't have set finish times. It's not a scripted play or movie.

I have little sympathy for your friends. They clearly didn't plan ahead.

  14. I think it will be a bit of a TRAGEDY if TWAT doesn't become a regular part of the set

I don't think There Was A Time will ever be a regular in the set. It's too demanding on Axl's voice.

Sounded great when I saw em. I was thrilled to get that (and Catcher at the next show I was at). But yeah it may not be an "every night" thing.

  15. And for Axl to help DJ reach the vision of making the best GnR album ever, he'll have to come up wit something 10000 x better than his current vocal abilities...

Outside of Rio he's sounded fine to me.

Rio I'm ok with chalking up to the rain/cold - murder on any singer's vocals.

Beyond that, the studio allows for multiple takes, so that shouldn't be an issue.

I really like DJ's enthusiasm, even if I don't expect an album better than AFD. I hope it infects the rest of the band and we get a killer CD from this lineup at some point. To me, it'd make perfect sense to put out that, and the other songs from CD, as two different albums, or even a double album.

  16. ^

that isn't what happened at all.

If you've got more info post it. But that's what happened on the boards at the time. She blathered on about the t-shirt banning. Axl ripped her a new one after a while.

The only reason I even cared at the time was, I was actually at two shows on that tour (Canada 2010). It was hilarious listening to Madison insist on things happening a certain way when she wasn't in the fucking country, and some of us were. Believe me, if her story with true, the dude with the Slash banner, front row center on the floor in front of me, wouldn't have lasted long at the Toronto gig, but no one said shit to him and after two songs he draped it around his neck (this wasn't a homemade sign or protest, just one of those silkscreen things you can buy).

Could have been other shit as well. The board has a search function though, and that t-shirt story was in fact a part of it.

  17. DJ Ashba: "My plan is to release the best GNR album ever. I know we can do it"

    When? 2021?

That is funny. How did u ever come up with that?

And username has been at the forum for years. I've never heard anybody say that he and maddy were the same person.

is Madison still around? i remember her posting frequently in the old days.

She upset axl so after he called her, who according to almost everyone here was a huge fan, a bunch of petty names was banned

what!? banned by Axl? when and what exactly did she say?

    that she was a supporter.

Really? I thought it was because she said that a source told her people wearing Slash shirts were denied access to Gn'R shows.

    Yeah...pretty sure that was it.

That's exactly why, except her "source" was BS. I also recall someone who worked security at the show even posting on here *saying* he didn't see it happen, and magically his post was deleted.

All sorts of fishy shit went on around that time.

She was spreading a LOT of false BS about the supposed "Axl bans Slash shirts" crap on the Canadian tour. Given I was at two of the shows on that tour, where people were walking around in Slash shirts and no one was harassed, I can firsthand tell you that the story was false, but she just wouldn't drop it. Might have been some other stuff too.

Personally I've never spoken to her at all, but her actions really stood out around that time.
