coolio GNR
I have just begun to get into Frank Zappa and I have listened to "My Guitar wants to kill your mama" and "Bobby Brown". I like them both. Can you recommend some songs for a beginner?
NewGunner22
I'll quote what someone sent me a while ago when I asked the same question:Song (Album)Camarillo Brillo (Over-Nite Sensation)I am the Slime (Over-Nite Sensation)Peaches En Regalia (Hot Rats)My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama (Weasels Ripped My Flesh)Titties & Beer (Zappa in New York)Pygmy Twilight (Roxy & Elsewhere)Cheepnis (Roxy & Elsewhere)Muffin Man (Bongo Fury)Don't Eat the Yellow Snow (Best of Zappa)Personally, I'd recommend I Am the Slime, Muffin' Man, and Don't Eat the Yellow Snow. Also, I'd pick up Dancin' Fool if I were you - it's hilarious. Edited December 20, 2007 by NewGunner22
FunkyMonk
Get Over-Nite Sensation and Apostrophe just for starters IMO. They're really easy to get into (especially in comparison to some of his other stuff). After that if you want to "expand", my personal favourites are Joe's Garage and Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar. I however am no expert on the man , but those are just my favourite albums out of what I've got (I really need to get more though, especially some earlier stuff I think). Gash
I must have a sick mind. When I saw the topic as "Frank Zappa - I want to get into him" my first inclinations were to reply with "You'll need a shovel." Anyway, great man, song wise two of my favourites have always been "Watermelon in Easter Hay" and "Peaches en Regalia."If you get into Zappa's stuff, I'd also like to recommend his friend and contemporary, Captain Beefheart. IzzySixx
i would start off by getting 'strictly commercial', the best of. has zappa's most listenable songs on it, then go from there onto his really fucked up wierd stuff.
NewGunner22
While we're on Beefheart, I'd like to say that Zig Zag Wanderer is amazing.
