FORMER Whitesnake guitarist Mel Galley is dying of cancer, he revealed yesterday.

The 59-year-old has told friends he has only a short time to live after recently being diagnosed with the disease.

It comes just a month before the rock legend was due to take to the stage again with a new band after years away from the spotlight.

Mel, of Cannock, Staffordshire, said: "It happens. But I have had a fantastic life and been very lucky.

"I have seen some great bands and played with many great musicians, and have enjoyed some tremendous experiences."

The rocker added: "I am thankful that I can say a proper goodbye to all the friends I have made, who are now rallying round me and my family."

I hate Whitesnake, but I'm sorry to hear that.

Aaaw, that sucks. Does anyone know what type of cancer he has? Hopefully he won't pass before he gets back together with the band.

Wow...

I feel very sorry for him, what a terrible way to die. Cancer is the biggest killer pretty much and it's a shame that he has it. Poor guy. :( I don't like Whitesnake either but that's no good.

Heart and blood vessel diseases (don't know if that's the words for it, it was just a direct translation from Swedish...) kills more here in Sweden at least.

And I like whitesnake, am I alone in that?

You and every chick that was 14 in 1988+their boyfriends.

Whitesnake was around for a few years before the late 1980's hair phase. I think this guy was in the original band.

Cancer sucks.

Yeah, I know, but that was before their breakthrough, wasn't it? Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't know much about Whitesnake.

Yeah. "Slide it in" is a good album, I think it came out in 81 or 82. They didn't turn into a glam band until 1987. Probably a record

company decision. But "Whitesnake" was a good band at one time, before they became commercial. Oh well, it wasn't all bad, Tawny

Kitean looked great in those videos.

Whitesnake's debut album was in 1978. Before Whitesnake, David Coverdale was the singer of Deep Purple. A

nd his breakthrough with Whitensake in the US, was in 1987 when he moved to Glam Metal with the extremely successful self-titled album. Before that, Whitesnake was very well known on his country origin, UK.

I thought the original guitarists were Mickey Moody and Bernie Marsden.

I like Whitesnake, too, and I can't imagine what the guy or any person in his position is feeling, but in the life stage that he's in, perhaps he's in a position to handle it fairly well, all things considered.
