Indie Rock

Recommended Posts

So I know a lot of people here don't like so called "indie" bands but whatever, there's some that do. I've been meaning to check out some bands but I don't know where to begin and I know there are a couple of members on here who are quite knowledgeable, so recommend me something...

Here's my last.fm: http://www.last.fm/user/ShuffleItAll/ so take a look and then recommend me some indie rock you think I'd like :)

Thanks!

This is a pretty good list. The 100 greatest indie-rock albums ever by blender: http://www.blender.com/guide/articles.aspx?ID=2974

Their top 10 is:

1 Pavement "Slanted and Enchanted"

2 Sonic Youth "Daydream Nation"

3 The Replacements "Let It Be"

4 REM "Murmur"

5 Pixies "Surfer Rosa"

6 Arcade Fire "funeral"

7 The Velvet Underground, "The Velvet Underground"

8 My Bloody Valentine "Loveless"

9 Big Star "Third/Sister Lovers"

10 The Smiths "The Smiths"

I would recommend you "Doolittle" by Pixies (definitely their best album) and "Viva Dixie Submarine Transmission Plot" by Sparklehorse. These are two awesome albums.

Sparklehorse:

The album version of this song is amazing,

Indie rock? I think you have to narrow it down.

According to your last.fm you listen to alot of the same music as me. I'll recommend some records:

The Wrens - Meadowlands

bozman-wrens.jpg

The Wrens is an indie-rock band from New Jersey, which was formed in the laste 80's.

In the mid-90's The Wrens was offered to sign a major deal with label which wanted them

to change their music to fit a more 'mainstream' audience. They rejected this deal and were

later was replaced by Creed  After fighting with the music business for about 7 years

in 2003 they released Meadowlands. After that this album has pretty much obtained a cult status

for every indie-rock-fan out there. I would have a hard time to discribe how this album sounds like,

I just don't think there is any words that fits this record.

The New Pornographers - Mass Romantic

1194124394.jpeg

As a power-pop enthusiast I can not not recommend this album. The New Pornographers

is an indie power-pop band from Canada. I was hooked after one second of this album.

From last.fm "Their sound is influenced by that of such power pop bands as The Cars and Cheap Trick;

their songs, however, are generally of a greater melodic and harmonic complexity."

They have catchy guitar-riffs which pleases me as a fan of classic rock, and together with their harmonic vocal

their music sound simply amazing. I just love the sound of this band.

Best tracks on this album:

Mass Romantic

The Slow Descent Into Alcoholism

Letter From An Occupant

Centre For Holy Wars

Thanks for the tips! I'll check out those albums Raw Power, and the thing is I can't narrow it down because I don't know enough, that's the problem :D Which is why I posted my lastfm so you guys who actually know more can narrow it down :P

axlfan88: I've already got Doolittle by Pixies, which is really good although I'd like it more if there were more rockers on it...

Black Lips

Blitzen Trapper

The Magnetic Fields

Spoon

The Mountain Goats

Pavement

The Pixies

Neutral Milk Hotel

Arcade Fire

Silver Jews

Liars (you'll like these guys a lot I think)

Vampire Weekend

The Strokes

The Replacements

I love the Replacements, they're one of my favorite bands and in the top 10 on my lastfm :D I've tried the Strokes's Is This It since I've heard it's been really good but it doesn't really "do" anything for me, I mean it's good but not mindblowing or anything...

And thanks for the tips everyone, keep 'em coming :)

The Smiths and The Pixies are a logical place to start. Extremely consistent bands with an absolute refusal to wander off into mediocrity and shit like REM and U2.

The Dears have done some interesting stuff. They opened for Morrissey a few times. Also, The Organ is a cool indie girl band. Both from Canada!

Sorry but Blender's list is not "indie". People are have been throwing the word around lately kind of like they did with "alternative" in the 90's.

Indie means "independent". That means the artist is signed with an independent label and not a major. "Indie" is not a music genre.

You could say that almost all bands were at some point then.....i.e. Gnr-uzi-suicide, but I don't think you could put together a top 10 list and say that R.E.M. is an indie band any more.

R.E.M has probably been signed at one indie-label one time lang ago (I don't know much about them), but they don't qualify as "indie."

They are today signed at Warner Bros.. last time I checked that's not an indie label

I don't consider a mainstream band indie even if they are signed on an independent label, e.g. Wolfmother.

You need to hear Twin Cinema.....it is a huge step foward, from Mass Romantic.

I like it a thousand times better................the melodies are better.

The Dears have done some interesting stuff. They opened for Morrissey a few times. Also, The Organ is a cool indie girl band. Both from Canada!

Sometimes a indie/alternative band writes such good music......they become popular.

That band in the last 20 years has been U2.

Don't hate.

I try to avoid absurd discussions as much as I can. So, I'm just going to point this fact out : when REM released Murmur (the record that made the Blender list) they were signed with an indie label called IRS Records.

From wikipedia: The single was followed by the Chronic Town EP in 1982, the band's first release on I.R.S. Records. In 1983, the band released its critically acclaimed debut album Murmur, and built its reputation over the next few years through subsequent releases, constant touring, and the support of college radio. Following years of underground success, R.E.M. entered the mainstream in 1987 with the hit song "The One I Love". The group signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1988

Murmur var released in 1983! Now REM are signed on Warner Bros and one of the most mainstream rockbands out there. Just because they once was signed on an indie-label

doesn't mean they're still indie.

I listened to this yesterday and I liked it, I can't really say anything more at the moment since I gotta listen to it again before giving an opinion...

Pavement

The Pixies

Neutral Milk Hotel

Arcade Fire

Silver Jews

Liars (you'll like these guys a lot I think)

Vampire Weekend

The Replacements

Care to recommend any albums by these bands? Or from one of the others?

It's hard to know where to start when it's a band you've basically know nothing about...
