december pain Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 I just got back from this yesterday, I will post a full review in a few hours. Suffice it to say, it was AMAZING. All the bands were great and I was more trashed then I ever have been in my life. It may have been the greatest concert I have ever been to. Stay tuned for the full review Quote
december pain Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 (edited) Virgin Fest Does Not DissapointWhen is a concert worth $200? Why would any pea-brain ever shell out that much cash to watch a few over bloated, pretentious artists bitch at the crowd about downloading there hit songs? How could this possibly be a good idea? What if the $200 you just spent meant you would be able to hang out with some of your closest friends and listen to some of the most amazing performers of our generation? What if that precious ticket would allow you to meet new friends and hear some truly classic rock at its finest? Would the lifelong memories really be worth it?This past weekend was the third annual Virgin Mobile Festival held in Baltimore, Maryland. The festival was located at the Pimlico Race Track, a whopping 140 acres of music, dance tents, food, and other strange attractions. Each day the show started at noon and ended at 10 PM. There were so many quality bands it was unbelievable. It was on April 8th when I first saw the thread Zint had posted, and I immediately knew that I had to go. I rounded up a posse who would be willing to go to this. The number of people who wanted to go fluctuated daily, once getting as many as 12 people willing to pay for it and at one point down to just two. As the weeks went by I watched with baited breath as more and more awesome bands were added to the bill. Foo Fighters? Fuck yeah. Kanye West? You have got to be kidding me. Bob Fucking Dylan? Chuck “Duck-Walk” Berry? It was all too good to be true. Finally, we had our number. Four of my friends were willing to go. Being from Jersey, it would be a measly 3 hour drive down. But where could we stay? You have to be 25 to rent a hotel room in most states, and the cost for that would surely be astronomical. We didn’t want to have to pay for food, gas, and tickets, and then throw in a hotel room for good measure. There was just no way. This is where one of my friends stepped in. His uncle lives just twenty minutes from Pimlico, and perhaps we could stay there. It took a lot of convincing, but by some miracle my friend was able to get us the whole house for the weekend, unsupervised, while his uncle was (Ironically) in New Jersey for the weekend. I don’t think I have to tell you that four 18 year olds and a 16 year old in a house all to themselves was going to be a blast. We bought the beer and headed down to Baltimore at 5:30 in the morning because none of us could sleep. We got there at 7:30 and found ourselves bored out of our minds with nothing to do. It was too early to pre-game (In hindsight maybe we should have, but I will explain more later) and we all just anxiously sat around waiting for the show to start. I apologize if none of you care about the above post, I promise in my next post I will actually talk about the music lol. Edited August 12, 2008 by december pain Quote
december pain Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 (edited) So we got there on Saturday at noon and the first band we saw was on the North Stage, Cat Power. We stayed for about five minutes and then left the boring travesty. We went to the South Stage and saw KT Tunstall. She was actually pretty decent. She does that one song, Suddenly I See. We saw most of her set which was pretty enjoyable. She played mostly accoustic rock and her onstage banter was pretty good. 7/10After KT was a band called Gogol Bordello. My friends and I had done a little bit of research on a few of the bands and we saw that Gogol Bordello played the song Start Wearing Purple. We figured that this guy was just a big joke and we stayed because he reminded us of Borat. Boy, were we wrong. This guy was NUTS! The crowd was phenomenal and they broke into moshpits on just about every song. We were blown away by how hardcore the fans of him were, and he put on a KILLER set. It was like some sort of heavy metal/polka and it was awesome. Seriously, any guy whose main instruments are an accordian and a violin and can inspire that kind of craziness was well worth the attention. 9/10Next was Lupe Fiasco. He was decent I suppose, lots of crowd surfing but overall kinda meh. I knew two songs, Superstar and Daydream, but overall it was kind of average. 6/10We got lunch and came back for the end of Bloc Party, who were really lame. We saw the last song my Citizen Cope minutes later on the other stage which was actually kinda catchy. But overall those two bands were of little worth. The Offspring followed. Despite the generic contrived songs, the crowd absolutely LOVED them and it was by far the craziest crowd of the whole two day festival. My friends and I went crowd surfing during this show while moshpits were breaking out ALL OVER THE PLACE. Depsite the less than stellar songs, the crowd alone made the show pretty spectacular. 8/10After that was Chuckberry and the Silver Beats. The first band, the Silver Beats, was a Beatles coverband consisting of all asian members. It was actually pretty cool and they played for about half an hour. Then, the legend himself, Chuck Berry strolled on. He was great and he even did the Duck Walk at the end, but the crowd sucked ass. No one was getting into it. They were all getting ready for the final band of the night...Foo Fucking Fighters. I had seen them ten days previous and they always put on a hell of a show. They played mostly the same set as when I had first seen them, obviously dropping a few songs to meet with the festival alloted time. Dave Grohl is a great frontman, cracking jokes with the audience in between songs and really putting all his energy into every song. Again, we decided it was time to crowd surf. I was dropped about three times but finally made it to the front, and then I had to watch from the big screen way in the back. Still, it was totally worth it.However, it was completely different for my friend. When he went crowd surfing, he dropped his keys and lost them. Apparently, someone threw them on the stage and Dave picked them up. "What kind of fucker loses there car keys at a concert? I guess I got my Christmas bonus this year!" he then proceeded to read out the address of my friend which was on the keys, and all of my friends just went nuts! It was amazing! At the end of the show (After one more time crowd surfing through "Monkey Wrench") we finally got the keys back and headed home. No, we did not get to meet Dave Grohl. But we were in an amazing state of mind for the next day's shows, a day that was filled with so many amazing memories...More on Day Two Later. Edited August 13, 2008 by december pain Quote
JONEZY Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 Great review DP, looking forward to Day 2 and Stone Temple Pilots especially. Quote
december pain Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 We all crashed early that night, had a few beers and all but other than that it was an early night. The next day we arrived at the festival around 12:40. We missed two acts, Hollywood Undead and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. I was kind of upset because BRMC had intrigued me but it didnt really matter. This was the day my friend and I decided to get trashed. We brought some vodka in a waterbottle and he drank it with gatorade while I had it straight up. Unfortunately I kept making faces and soon it was confiscated. However at that point I was starting to feel the effects of it, which made me more social. My friend and I began talking to two kids from Michigan, a brother and a sister who agreed to buy us alcohol throughout the day. The Go Team finished there set and it was nothing to write home about. After that was Andrew Bird, who sounded like a mix of Rufus Wainwright and Tom Petty. He was okay I suppose but obviously he wasn't the main attraction. 7/10After that our friends from Michigan bought us more alcohol, and by the time the next act She and Him came on I was really starting to get retarded. She and Him is fronted by Zoey Deschanel from the movie Elf and the show Weeds. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zooey_Deschanel I kept on drinking and talking with people and I missed her whole set. All I remember from her was that me and the kids from Michigan kept saying how hot she was.The reason that almost everyone was at the South Stage at that time was for Lil' Wayne. We had pretty decent spots, my one friend and the Michigan kids. My other three friends were front row center and did not move for the rest of the day. I feel sorry for them because they missed alot of fun.Anyways, Lil' Wayne was scheduled to come on at 3:50. I had no interest in him whatsoever but all of my friends were there so I decided to stay. I was promised more alcohol after the performance so I felt it was a good trade-off."Weezy" as he is called was horrendous. He was absolutely terrible. First of all, he came on almost forty minutes late. The retarded crowd didn't mind though, they were moshing and loving it. I could not see why, he really did not put on a great show at all. Kanye West came out for the last song of his set which obviously got a huge response from the crowd. But overall Lil' Wayne was a real dick. He said nothing to the crowd about why he was late and his perfromance was very watered down and weak. 2/10Because he started late, we missed all of Iggy and The Stooges. I was so pissed off because I had been looking forward to that perfomance. We headed to the North Stage just as Iggy was leaving. I was told he put on a good show. The place was packed for Stone Temple Pilots. I met some more people there and we talked about STP, Velvet Revolver, GNR, and Rockband. We met a couple who were probably in their forties who seemed pretty cool and they were telling us about how they had been STP fans since the beginning. Alot of comparisons were made between Weiland and Axl while we waited for them to come on.Like Lil' Wayne, STP came on late, probably 15-20 minutes. The consensus was that Scott was probably shooting up or something. Anyways, they came on and busted straight into Vasoline. The crowd loved it. Scott was as charismatic as ever, and he didnt falter on any of his words. They marched through there hits, with the crowd going nuts for just about every song. Lots of moshing and crowd surfing, I met some girl there and we made our way to the front and we started dancing. Before Plush Scott said to the crowd "This is something new we've been working on, hope you all enjoy it." After Plush was Interstate Love Song. My friend later told me that some guy jumped on stage during it, and I couldnt believe that I missed it. Scott brought out the megaphone right before Crackerman and I absolutely LOST IT when I saw that damn megaphone. I was screaming my ass off as they played every hit, ending with Trippin' on A Hole In A Paper Heart. They left the stage to the chant of STP! and then came back on for Dead and Bloated. This was the third time I had seen Weiland live (Twice In VR) and I was still floored by what an incredible frontman he was. The only thing I noticed was he didnt do nearly as many dance moves as when I had seem him before, which was dissapointing. But he was perfect on the lyrics and overall I think STP was the second best show at the festival. 9/10We headed back to the South Stage (Stopping for more alcohol of course) and prepared for the final act of the festival. Bob Dylan was finishing his set with Like A Rolling Stone. My friend who had been at the South Stage the whole day told me that Bob Dylan sucked. He didnt play any of his hits and no one could understand what he was singing. The sun began to set, and soon "Good Morning" by Kanye West began playing. As the crowd went nuts Mr. West began playing song after song from Graduation, with I Wonder, Champion, Cant Tell Me Nothing. The crowd was so into it and Kanye truly had an impressive performace. His stage was not nearly as elaborate as his Glow in The Dark Tour, but the lights and smoke were awesome. He only came on like 10 minutes late but that may have been from all the delays in the beginning of the day thanks to Lil' Wayne. During Touch The Sky kanye talked about how he was upset that he was missing Nine Inch Nails. He said that "Trent Reznor is the same person as me but in a different genre, we are both phenomenal in what we do. We keep pushing the envelope and I am truly dissapointed that I cannot watch him." During Flashing Lights I slow danced with some girl as Kanye explained how he was voting for Obama. He also talked about how people were hating on him for his shoddy performance at Bonaroo. He apologized for the crowd and asked if this show made up for it. The crowd went nuts. He continued with Jesus Walks, Through The Wire, Heard Em Say and Gold Digger. The second to last song was Good Life which the crowd loved. Then came the big finale. The slow, ominous techno beginning started. It seemed to drag on forever. As the crowd ate it up, Kanye launched headstrong into "Stronger" sending the crowd into a frenzy. The song was incredible, and an amazing way to end not only his set but the festival as a whoel. When it was all said and done Kanye proved to me that he is one of the top perfromers of our generation. He may be an asshole, but he can put on one fucking good show. We left on such a high and we were all touching the sky that night. 10/10 Quote
