Punk 76 -79

Recently I started a thread about some youtube footage regarding the early Toronto punk scene.

frankk asked if it was part of an entire documentary...it was...more of an overview than a documentary really.

I recorded it when it first broadcast in 1991.

I dug around and found the tape...transferred it all to dvd-r and spent the last few days uploading it to youtube.

Also, the show following the punk 76-79 broadcast (which aired on Much Music on a show called City Limits) was called Indie Street, and they aired several punk related videos from the early scene up to about 1982.

I've included those as well.

ffrank...borrow that laptop again and watch this!

London,New York City and Toronto...that's where it was happening!

If you're interested in the early days of the punk scene...it's worth a look.

here ya go.. Punk 76-79

watched this like 4 times now without sound. dunno whether to laugh or fuckin cry  didnt think there was a stick of pistols schtick that i hadn't seen. evidently i was fucking wrong :)

I thought you'd like it for that reason as well.LOTS of footage of many artists that generally is uncirculated.Mainly because it's exclusive Toronto footage.

Long before there was MTV or Much Music...Toronto had a music show called Toronto Rocks..which became The New Music.

When an artists came to town it was always treated as a big event.A film crew sent out to film some live footage, backstage interviews. And it was always well done...bands used to welcome it.

Same with the early days of Much Music actually,if a concert rolled around there was guaranteed in studio appearances and interviews, live footage and shit.(I've got a really cool GnR interview from just before the shows in Toronto in '91).

Back when music channels used to be about...you know...music!

Nowadays music channels are about Lindsey Lohan barfing on Ashlee Simpson's party dress at Nick Lachey's coming out party...it's really sad how disposable it's all become.

Anyhoo...yeah ffrank, there's lots of cool shit like that around.I'll be searching around here in the future for other cool clips to add...like when the Dead Kennedy's rolled into Toronto (there's a clip of that in this 76-79 special).

Some other cool footage that comes to mind is when the Who performed their farewell show in Toronto back in '82...never ever ever gonna play live again...it was a big event.

It was the first ever entire concert satellite LIVE broadcast.

There's an edited film of the concert...but I filmed the ENTIRE concert as it aired LIVE on t.v.

The cool part was there was a pre show special about the history of the Who AND a post show special afterwards (filmed by the New Music)...I have it...all of it...every second of it.

Post show was backstage interviews etc. after the concert....not as long.

The whole broadcast including concert was 3 1/2 hours.

Hey ffrank...

I found some footage of PIL live in Toronto in 1982...Lydon gets right pissed off at someone who keeps spitting on him "keep your filth and cheap imitations to yourself".

...got those speakers yet??

Rotten is just fucking priceless onstage!!! PiL need to fucking release more videoey type stuff. i really think they're a band very underrated cuz theres just so little known about em. everybody knows the sex pistols, you'd think PiL'd be like logical progression from there...apparently not. look at the fucking size of the crowd and how into it they all are :):):):)!!! PiL were fucking nuts!!

hey ffrank...curious to know what you thought of the Dishrags

they're on my hunt-down list :):) the lead chick kinda reminds me of Gaye Advert some. really good though, almost have a jangle-pop quality to em huh? the entire thing is fucking amazing dude, most of these bands have like...good solid shit behind em, its amazing more of em didnt get picked up and really go places. something musta been wrong with the way you guys were shovelling your scene because that shit was fucking incredible dude. im really not just saying that its like...a secret history of punk rock. its not even like...touched upon even vaguely anywhere, why?

like in Punk Attitutude theres like ONE measley little passing fart in the wind mention of DOA and thats fucking it (Henry Rollins in the bit where he's talking about how local bands started to eclipse visitors n stuffs) cant find none of their shit anywhere though. check this out though, im fucking jacking this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/VANCOUVER-COMPLICATION...idZp1638Q2em127

Pointed Sticks need hunting too :):)

http://cgi.ebay.com/THE-DISHRAGS-love-hate...Q2em118Q2el1247

fuckin 60 bucks though? :(

ever since you showed me that band the subhumans? (Death to Sickoids ) its like...fuck, the whole scene around there, for what teensy knowledge i have on it seemed to be more of a scene than really NY and London ever were inasmuch as the people seemed more in it together and less...airy fairy? you guys need to make this shit available somehow...i swear on my nuts bands like the subhumans and the dishrags should be like...Buzzcocks status.

makes me wonder too...what other great unwritten-about scenes there must've been..

ffrank...here's a direct link to opm records

link

They are responsible for the Punk Hole of Fame cd releases.Which is essentially the masters for 70's vinyl remastered for cd release along with rare demos and live tracks.

I have two of the Punk Hole of Fame releases so far and they are excellent!!!

(I have the Viletones and Demics)....I also have the Forgotten Rebels release - Tomorrow Belongs To Us,and Teenage Head.

I just ordered the Dishrags and the Mods.

There's a few more I want to get as well...(B-Girls,The Ugly,The Curse,The Secrets).

They deliver to the U.S. for a mere 3.50 per disc!

And here's a link to Sudden Death Records (Joey Keithly from D.O.A.,...it's his label).

link

You can get the two essential DOA releases Something Better Change and Hardcore '81.

And right now they have a deal, buy a cd (for 16.00 and THAT'S delivery included...to the U.S.) you can choose a second cd for 5 bucks...and two of the choices are the Pointed Sticks cd's!!).

So that's two cd's for 21 bucks...delivered to the U.S. (postage included).

And I just noticed they've added two Toxic Reasons releases to their catalogue!!

Early 80's Boston hardcore...saw em many times (I'll be fucking getting those!).
