Guest knerken
I know it is perhaps the most hated and bashed rock-genre amongst rock-fans, but I can't help it.... I love it. The energy and catchy melodies and harmonies are just plain awsome IMO. Yeah, they all dress the same, sound the same and sing about the same things. But they manage kick ass even though! Any thoughts?

Guest knerken
I listen to Green Day's Dookie once in a while. I really like that album.Awesome album. Green Day should stick to lyrics about farts and masturbation, instead moving on to of political concept-stuff.

Shuffle
Green Day is the only good band out of that genre that I've heard. The other ones just feel as copycats to me, and lame copycats.

Bucketslash
pop punk, like the oxymoron that it's name implies, makes me angry in a way that could possibly lead to the destruction of a third world country by a careless child of a president accidentally launching a nuclear waeponin other words, i hate how as punk rockers, they are trying to fight stereotypes, but at the same time, making stereotypical music and using stereotypical fads and corporate promotion to do soand yes, while i realize that to a certain degree, to reach the largest audiance imaginable, exploitation is needed, like would a communist author object to his book being sold at barnes and nobles? no cause thats where you buy books. but the ego of a genre that tries to launch artists by destroying the credibility of a generation, features lackluster technique on an instrument(can craig's brother, lagwagon, or nofx please learn quality musicianship), mixing it with mtv's stereotypical way of buying into youth by presenting bands that are depressed like them, and shoving it so far down your throat all you can do is crap it out, leads me to believe that something's gotta changepop punk is a lie, because it presents billy joe armstrong as a guitar hero, when what's the guy do on guitar? play heavy power chords, a decent lick here or there, and finger picks an accoustic ballad. The real genius behind green day isn't billy joe at all, it's the bass, the drums, and the catchy backing vocals which make choruses better.oh and before i'm done trashing it, can you do me a favor, and take wonderwall, and start singing "boulevard of broken dreams". I dare youok, now i realize it was a little harsh, but American idiot was shoved WAYYYY too far down my throatGood Bands:Craig's Brother(a supergroup made of nofx and lagwagon)Alkaline Trioscreeching weasel
ffrankwhite
fuckin lame-ass bullshit that was over a decade too late. a weak watered down directionless and positively insulting re-packaging of a movement, a set of bands that MEANT something. that were DOING something. that were GOING somewhere. people that put in real fuckin hard work to scratch out a place of their own in the world that they were thrown into, by hook or by crook. this shit masquerading as punk is a fucking insult. punk was cutting edge, hardcore, confrontational, it shook you, punk was never lazy, could never be lazy, it was forward thinking and forward moving, it wasnt satisfied to just stagnate...it changed society, it changed peoples ways of thinking and this...this shit is a disservice to the earnest forthright passionate and RELEVANT (keyword) movement that was punk rock. you want some fucking punk rock? fuck Green Day and all of that, go check out Black Flag, watch a band play like every gig is their last moment on this fucking planet, watch The Sex Pistols at longhorns confronting and challenging their audience with their music, punk rock is such a beautiful thing but its sort of been uploaded into popular culture in all the wrong ways. fashion, scene kids, hairstyles, clothes, how-to punk rock guides, its fucking bullshit. bands with no guts that churn out fucking glossy slickly produced three chord verse chorus verse bullshit with all the passion of a dead trout.what you gotta understand that this is something people fought for...in hundreds of ways. its not something to just be flippantly adopted and fucked with. but in many ways it doesnt really matter, because bullshit will always be bullshit and eventually exposed as and thought of and recognised for being bullshit.you've just gotta wanna be the antedote
FunkyMonk
I love Offspring, but I don't think they fit in with all of those bands. Just because they were around the same time doesn't make them as shit as say, Blink. Rancid and Offspring were the best things to come out of that little "punk revival" phase. Guest knerken
The bashing has begun Personally, I don't care about how these bands dress and act or how they got their record deal. My point about this thread was to talk about the music. Of course, it is far from the old classic bands like Black Flag or Pisstols. In many of your eyes the music may not even be worthy to be called punk, but that is what it's called. I think the name high school-punk fits well as this was punk-influenced bands which were popular amongst high school-kids in the 90s. Same with pop-punk; pop-influenced punk or vice-versa. And the music itself may not be revolutionary or genious masterpieces, but it's got catchy hooks and lots of energy, which I have appreciated a lot lately. And if we agree that Offspring counts in this genre, then Rancid, NOFX, Reel Big Fish and off course The Descendents should be mentioned aswell. Gash
A lot of it I like because it reminds me of when I was back at secondary school so there's definately a nostalgia trip in there. I rarely put any of it on nowadays but I'll often enjoy it if it's on. Just pop music with a bit of an oomph to it you know? It was something I could listen to with friends too who seemed to not like anything else that I was listening to in those days. At the time they were singing about things that a white middle class secondary school student that didn't particularly fit in with the higher end of the school's social strata could relate to. They really were often a stepping stone towards better and more interesting bands for me, and for a lot of people but it seems that a lot of "punks" nowadays seem to refuse to acknowledge what got them into their taste of music in the first place. So Greenday, Offspring, Blink (to a much much lesser extent) I always saw as the trinity. Never cared much for the copycat bands. Oh and has anyone heard of (Spunge)!? Hahaha! Do tell me if you have! From that I got into better pop punk bands like the Descendents, Screeching Weasel, Rancid, The Queers, Crimpshrine, Jawbreaker and stuff. There are some truly awful bands however. Simple Plan for instance are probably the worst band on the planet. I really could never get into NOFX although I do respect them. As far as I'm concerned "The Decline" is particularly ironic because thats what happened to their music after that E.P.
