DopeSickGirl
Now, I know generally covers aren't as good as the originals, but in this case. I'm really fucking torn!I love both versions, its a fucking haunting song. Both versions are full of emotion. But, Cash or NIN?I really can't chose.Atm, I'm leaning towards NIN because of the darkness about it, but Cash's version is so emotional, perhaps because he was coming towards the end of his life as he recorded. So, MYGNR. I put it to you; Nine Inch Nails or Johnny Cash??xDSGx
SunnyDRE
NIN.Doesn't mean I don't like Cash's version, but I think Trent version is perfect. Edited July 12, 2008 by SunnyDRE

nameless_girl
Hah. This song is one of the examples I always tend to use when I'm trying to make the point that sometimes it takes a cover to bring a song to its full potential. Zint
NIN...absolutelyI can't really relate to the lyrics in terms of Johnny Cash. Can't ever imagine Cash coming up with "my empire of dirt" (to list but one example).Reznor owns that song.. GNR 1991
Cash takes that song to a whole new level. The NIN version is godly in it's own right too though. I'll go with Cash by a slight margin.
DCGNR
Much like Live & Let Die, when someone does a cover so damn good, they own itCash took a good song and made it a great oneHis voice was so perfect it was almost like Reznor wrote it for him

Axlin08
Cash.NIN's original was masterful, but Cash's brings a whole new energy to it, and in such a perfect way. It seemed like Johnny was singing his own eulogy. Haunting & touching in such a way beautiful way....
mike bibby
NIN in a Mike Tyson rape.I always though Cash butchered it.

Opax
Nine Inch Nails, its the original, who wants to hear some leathered old man sing a Trent Reznor song?
Angelica
Cash, he takes it to a vastly more poignant level. I can't even listen to the original anymore, it's so hollow in comparison.
madison
Definitely Trent's version - all the way.He wrote it, he lived it and he plays it from the heart. Not saying Cash's version isn't cool - because it is. But I think Mr. Cash made the song a little too mainstream for my tastes. jmo.

NIN's version has a slightly more......ethereal quality? I can't really put my finger on it but it's what makes NIN songs in general reach a very special level. mr.b
Atm the Cash version, it changes from time to time. I haven't heard a decent live version of hurt since Further Down and the live versions these days are truely shite. I don't know why but I have turned against NIN lately... appetite for illusions
Any version with Bowie from '95 is amazing. The Cash version at first was unreal, but has been overplayed. And as said before, it's Trent's song.
