PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Mitch Mitchell, drummer for the legendary Jimi Hendrix Experience of the 1960s and the group's last surviving member, was found dead in his hotel room early Wednesday. He was 61.

Mitchell was a powerful force on the Hendrix band's 1967 debut album "Are You Experienced?" as well as the trio's albums "Electric Ladyland" and "Axis: Bold As Love." He had an explosive drumming style that can be heard in hard-charging songs such as "Fire" and "Manic Depression."

Damn! I really wanted to see this Experience Hendrix tour, too. It had some amazing guests! I should have just gone ahead and done it. Mitch Mitchell is actually my favorite thing about the Experience  Damn it, now that's two people that have died that I really wanted to see but didn't bother seeing (other was Kevin DuBrow). Hard Rock Park has yet another brick to add to the Rock n' Roll Heaven shrine. :(

That's fucked - he was an incredible drummer with great feel and a really distinct groove... always loved the drumming on the Experience records.

He was great even in his latter years - you can hear him here with Slash and his drumming is subtle, but still superb: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=S3Mm3WPw2Xs

Classic Mitchell - http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=itXbYH8X5Y0
