Subtle Signs
I have been jamming Splinter lately (underrated album,IMO) Anyway, I remember when Hit That came out, people were like, oh boy another goofy Offspring song. I think the lyrics deserve another look. I know that Dexter Holland is not exactly Lennon/McCartney in terms of lyrics but I happen to like these.Hit ThatThe winds of fortuneDon‘t blow the sameShe had to get outAnd make a changeShe had a kid nowBut much too youngThat baby daddy‘s out having funHe‘s sayingI‘m on a rollWith all the girls I knowHis baby mommaShe ain‘t so slowHe‘s sayingI‘m on a rollWith all the girls I knowI know you wanna hit thatI know you wanna hit thatAll the world is gettin‘ with, I sayConsequences are a lot, but heyThat‘s the way itThat‘s the way things goWhat was familyIs now a shellWe‘re raising kids nowWho raise themselvesSex is a weaponAnd it‘s like a drugIt gets him right into that grave that he just dugShe‘s sayingI‘m on the runI‘m chasing guys for funHer baby daddyIt ain‘t his only oneShe‘s sayingI‘m on the runI‘m chasing guys for funI know you wanna hit thatI know you wanna hit thatEverybody‘s gettin‘ with, I sayConsequences are a lot, but heyThat‘s the way itThat‘s the way things goWell it winds upBroken upReally such a shameBut why notTake a chanceEverything‘s a gameAnd it don‘t stopHooking upNothing‘s gonna changeThe more he‘s tryingThe more he‘s buyingHe saysI‘m on a rollWith all the girls I knowHis baby mommaDon‘t need to knowHe‘s sayingI‘m on a rollWith all the girls I knowI know you wanna hit thatI know you wanna hit thatAll the world is gettin‘ with, I sayConsequences are a lot, but heyThat‘s the way itThat‘s the way things go
FunkyMonk
Good song, Offspring have a lot of cool/good lyrics. I wouldn't call it a joke song.
Kramerfan
I imagine there is meant to be meaning there, he isnt a master poet or anything but usually his lyrics are meant to offer some sort of social commentary.
Zeppelin
Splinter is underrated. I'd say it's a serious song with a commentary. The Offspring do a lot of songs like that, where they sound goofy, but are very serious. There's one on their newest album called Nothingtown. It sounds very happy, but the lyrics are fairly unhappy.Holland's always been good at doing that kinda thing.
KBear
It's funny you post this now, since only yesterday I decided to watch a bunch of their songs on You Tube. They've got some pretty cool tunes and I always dug Holland's voice and delivery. Hit That was one of the songs I liked most and it's got a great video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7J5TPXUrj-0I'll be picking up their Greatest Hits dual disc soon. By the way, what would you guys say is their best album? Edited November 17, 2008 by KBear

Hell, get em all but I would start with Ignition.This. Ignition is an amazing punk record. They just remastered it, but I love the old sound of it. That's me, though. After that, I'd just go in order and get Smash, then Ixnay, then Americana, and so on.My personal favourite is Ignition, followed by Ixnay On The Hombre. Great punk albums. KBear
Well, I got the Greatest Hits coming to me (gotta love Amazon, shipped in under 24 hours). I'll go from there, either Smash or Ignition.
