Estranged Reality
It's also the most downloaded album on quite a few private trackers - I mean, by a long shot, too. It shot right to the top. That's the thing - if Axl had released this ten years ago, 90% of those people probably would have bought it, because it was a helluva lot harder to download albums like that. Leaks weren't nearly as accessible - if they even ever occurred back then for the most part. Pirates will always be pirates (no Randy Lahey pun intended), but most people on trackers these days are just normal people - they aren't burning them to discs and selling them on the black market - they're just music fans. In 1998, most of them would have had to buy the album.Add all the thousands and thousands downloaded from Pirate Bay alone, then combine those with the hundreds of thousands from private trackers, music blogs, forums, etc., and you can see where some of the sales have been lost. FunkyMonk
That's just the way it goes. But hell, as long as they enjoyed it I don't give a shit if they downloaded it or not. If anyone told me I wasn't a fan of a band just because I downloaded their music they'd get a punch in the crotch.

FunkyMonk
I don't blame anyone for wanting everything for free. Hell, if I could steal everything else as easily as I can steal music I'd be much better off.

Not really. Ten years ago, without online services to aid them, they probably would have all been buying the album, but now they can just download it.I'm actually saying exactly what you said before: illegal downloading hurts album sales. I don't think it's as significant as the record industry would like to think (especially since i know quite a few people who download stuff are also huge music geeks who go out and buy everything on vinyl), but it's definitely going to hurt this album. That can be said for any album nowadays, but I think particularly with an album as divisive and hyped as Chinese Democracy. AbominableHoman
I downloaded the album. I don't have a fucking Best Buy, and I'm not wasting any money on a iTunes downloaded (plus I don't have any money).I really hate Best Buy. But today, I'm going to buck up, and order the fucking thing.
