dalsh327 Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 I've said this in other forums...a lot of hard rock fans gave up on pop metal and started getting into country music. When you see Keith Urban teaming up with Alicia Keys for "Gimme Shelter" and doing it really good, or Toby Keith playing part of "Stranglehold", there's definitely still the roots of rock there, but you also have bands like Wilco, guys like Hank III and Shooter Jennings who are not played on commercial country radio. You have to give Gram Parsons credit for playing a big part in the Stones classics from 69-72. There's stuff like Skynyrd, Eagles or Bob Seger that was part of classic rock but are played on country stations. Jack White teaming up with Loretta Lynn... Johnny Cash and Rick Rubin made it about the songs done in a certain style, and of course Willie Nelson is considered cool in any generation. Jerry Reed had some great songs, and Primus had covered one or two of them. Quote
Midnight Rambler Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 There is country music out there, you just dont hear it on the radio much. Townes Van Zandt, Ryan Adams, Whiskeytown, Cowboy Junkies, Jenny Lewis's new album. I love good country music. Quote
Guest Satanisk_Slakt Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Jolene by Dolly Parton is awesome. Quote

bt88 Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 you can never go wrong with Hank Williams Sr Quote
Johnny Utah Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 (edited) I think Keith Urban kicks ass. Great live performer, singer, songwriter and an amazing guitar player. I'd actually like to see him play some more rock guitar, just to see how good he actually is. Edited January 14, 2009 by Johnny Utah Quote
dirtylenny Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzell, Jimmie Rodgers, Ernest Tubb, Floyd Tillman, Merle Haggard. REAL country music. Quote
AxlsAngel Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 There is such a thing? j/k Country is probably my least-liked genre, but I do like some of the old school stuff like Hank, Waylon (my cousin named his son after him - yep, little Waylon lol), Merle, Johnny Cash (I think he's considered primarily country?), etc....I'll admit, there's some GOOD country tunes. Guest deleted_19765 Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Any Guns N' Roses fan should logically enjoy the outlaws. Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Hank Williams Jr. by extension.Conway Twitty, George Jones, Merle Haggard, and especially Ray Price, a personal favorite, are some other good artists from about the same time, just more commercial. Tammy Wynette and Loretta Lynn are essential as well.As for today's Country, there are a few artists I like. Brad Paisley is a smart writer who can rip on guitar, Eric Church is an enjoyable extension of Outlaw, and Taylor Swift is really changing things right now. Sara Evans is another good female Country singer. Now to abandon any semblance of impartiality:BUY Waylon Jennings' Honky Tonk Heroes, PLAY IT TILL IT BREAKS OR YOU HATE IT, THEN LEARN TO LOVE IT AGAIN. YOU WILL NOT REGRET THIS. Quote

MB. Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 I like Johny Cash too (but it is probably one of the few I knew about, I am not into country) Quote
