Guest Apollo Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 Def Leppard had the potential to be one of the best hard rock bands of all time. But despite bad-mouthing other hair bands and saying that they we're unlike the other bands of that generation, they were above the cheesy videos, cheesy songs, cheesy hair . . . . they put out Hysteria. Pour Some Sugar On Me could have been done by a dozen other bands of that era. It's no different than Cherry Pie or any of today's Nickleback popular songs. How did they go from Bringing On The Heartbreak to Two Steps Behind? From Rock of Ages to Wanna Get Rocked?Really?Of any band that I loved, Def Leppard has dissapointed me more than any other band. Look at their first couple albums:Bringing On The HeartbreakRock of AgesPhotographToo Late For LoveFoolinLady StrangeHigh n DryWastedGive me Pyromania, On Through The Night and High and Dry . . . . you can keep the other pop hair band shit!!!!!!!!!!!I still get dissapointed today when I listen to their old music and realize how amazing and rock influencing of a band they could have been. Sucks they turned into a hair pop band.IMO Hysteria might be the worst thing that ever happened to rock music. HYSTERIA = Nickleback Quote
DirtyDeeds Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 I don't see Hysteria and beyond to be that different than pre-hysteria, honestly. Quote

I mean that song is tremendous. Edited January 26, 2009 by DirtyDeeds Quote
Getizzyback Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Maybe they took a "slightly" bad turn, but Rick Allen losing his arm and Steve Clark's drug problems kinda forced things a little. They couldn't keep recording Pyromania and High N' Dry over and over again. I have also seen interviews with Joe Elliott where he absolutely would like to throw "On Through The Night" in a garbage can. Maybe today's Def Leppard are what they really are, and their earlier stuff was about Mutt Lange and getting on the map. Musical freedom is something earned by a group, in which you can shit on a plate and put it on an album cover and it will still sell. Quote

And songs such as Answer to the Master, Sorrow is a Woman, and High N Dry from their earlier albums sound totally different from their newer stuff. Quote
SunnyDRE Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Personally, I think Adrenalize is their best album and one of the best albums of the 90's.That's just me. Quote

No, probably not to a fan of pop rock music. But to a fan of hard rock, it's a great album.AND you think it feels outdated???? Well duh, it's over 20 years old. And Pour Some Sugar on Me doesn't sound outdated today?????I HATE that Def Leppard went from a hard rock band into a pop-rock band. I will admit I did like the song Long Way To Go.SUNNY . . . . jeez, is the world coming to an end? Overall I thought that ablum sucked. But I did like a couple songs off of Adrenalize. Tonight is pretty rocking.GETIZZY . . . I know what you are saying. But Elliott has ALWAYS tried to seperate def leppard from the other hair bands. He has always had a superior attitude about his music compared to the other hair bands from his era. That's why I find it a hypocritical when thats exactly what his band was. And anybody that says that Hysteria is a great album should NEVER be allowed to talk about hard rock music again. Pour Some Sugar on Me is the 90's version of Nickleback's "How You Remind Me." Quote
Kohli Rocks Entertainment Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Pour Some Sugar on Me is the 90's version of Nickleback's "How You Remind Me."What, the 15+ million people that bought Hysteria aren't allowed to speak about Hard Rock music? Hysteria saved the band--they were going broke and the label thought they had no hits left at the time because of how bad Women bombed as a single...Just because a rock song gets popular doesn't make it a bad song. I take it you don't like Welcome To The Jungle or Dude Looks Like A Lady. Pour Some Sugar On me is more on a pedastal with those tracks rather than anything by Nickelback. Animal and Don't Shoot Shotgun were pretty rocking on that album also... Quote
krissirge Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Hysteria is my favorite Def Leppard album Quote
GreenBud Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 At one time they were my favorite band. Everything after Hysteria is lame. 'Gods of War' is a damn good tune. Quote
moreblack Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 I have no problem with DL, they've made some really good enjoyable songs over the years. Quote
artfromtex Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Pete Willis and Rick Allen's left arm. that's what was missing. Quote

MrBrownstone531 Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 It's a shame a lot of people only bring up "Pour Some Sugar on Me" when discussing Hysteria. That might be the worst song on the album. The rest of the album is brilliant and a testament to their musicianship and Mutt Lange's genius. Quote
illusions Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 All I got is there greatest hits album, It's good enough for me how goods that song "when love and hate collide" Quote
EccoTides Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I thought "Yeah" was a pretty awesome album, lame title aside. As for the rest of the band's output, I dig a few singles here and there. Hysteria is a fun album, nothing more and nothing less. Quote

Guest Apollo Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 You people are missing the point! They completely changed who they were as a band when they released Hysteria. That's what dissapointed me. They went from being a hard rock band to being a hair band. And to the guys who were mocking my statement that Def Leppard could have been the biggest hard rock band ... I would be curious as to how old you guys are? Because Pyromania was THE rock album of the year in 1983. Quote

It might have been the most popular album of 1983, but albums like Murmur, Synchronicity, War, Hootenanny and Punch the Clock are far better albums. Quote
