nameless_girl
I'm always having odd Internet trouble! I use a proxy because I want to have access to a few web pages with regional restrictions. Nothing illegal, just poor web design on Slovenia's part. Unfortunately, my Internet connection has been getting slower and slower lately, so I started mucking about with my Firefox settings a bit and figured out that the connection actually works well when I disable my proxy settings. I reenabled them again right afterwards, because I wanted to stream something regional that won't work from my actual IP, but because of it, checking my mail, posting on forums and the like really hasn't been working for me too well lately, with any of the proxies I use. I even tried a few new ones, but they worked even worse. Is there a superior list of them somewhere, or is there anything I can do to my Internet settings to avoid this? highvoltage
Proxies are slow because information has to be transferred twice instead of once - when you use free ones, then this is further exacerbated by the number of other people using those proxies as well. You can probably find a faster proxy than the one you're using, but it's never going to be as fast or as consistent as you browsing without one. What are you trying to stream? Hulu? Max™
How about a Firefox addon which lets you turn the proxy on and off with a click of a button. Theres a couple here. The 2nd one might even let you do it on specific websites. I don't primarily use firefox so I can't check it out properly.https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1557https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2864 Edited March 23, 2009 by Max™
nameless_girl
Ah, they've always been a little slower, but they've been unusually slow lately, so I thought there might be a problem with my connection. What are you trying to stream? Hulu?Occasionally, but mainly it's Slovenian sites, so I've been using an old IP from there for about a year. I use a weekly Canadian one I get off a membership on an uploading site to stream CTV semi-frequently too.How about a Firefox addon which lets you turn the proxy on and off with a click of a button. I've been looking for less populated proxies too, so perhaps the combination of those two will work out for me.

kevin
If you want to just mask your IP while browsing, I really recommend Tor (The Onion Router) with privoxy and a tor button firefox extension= they might even have preconfigured firefox bundles for windows now, I'm not sure though. You can't really choose where you route through, but it most likely won't go to a country where your requested information is blocked. It never has for me :3http://www.torproject.org/
