Snake Eyes Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 I hear ska's like a punk/reggae/carribean mento mix? Got a few of bands I love that are influenced by it but I'm interested in what the sort of big guns/great little bands of that genre were, I don't really know how it sounds but I'm real fuckin' intregued by the description of it. Can anybody help get me started with some recommendations? Cheers. Or is it mostly shit? Quote

murray_TH Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 (edited) Bombskare are one of my recent purchases - you can find them on the iTunes Store. They're from Edinburgh and they've been playing live around here for years. I particularly love "Don't give it all away". I love Ian Dury and also the Blockheads... and Ian Dury & The Blockheads! Other than that, I'm still largely a big Ska virgin and don't really know what I'm talking about... yet. It's one of the few genres of music I still haven't properly dabbled with yet, but one I secretly love.My starting point has recently been the first wave of artists such as Prince Buster and the Skatalites. I've no idea if they're considered good, bad or ugly, but I never much care about what anyone else thinks. That said, I'd be over the moon if someone could point me in the right direction to help me find more underground/ classic artists in the field. If we're really just talking about "Ska Punk" here, then the thing has never really set me on fire... as it were...EDIT:Recently bought the Trojan Ska Box Set and it's got some great old school tunes on it.
