Green Day are #1 on Billboard! 21st Century Breakdown is my Album Of The Year

Since this point got lost in the shuffle in a GNR thread, I will once again say that Green Day kick ass and are still punk. They have made the album of their career and will debut at number one on Billboard with 215,000 copies sold in just three days. For those who didn't like Boulevard and Sepetember from American Idiot, prepare to be just as mad when 21 Guns hits radio shortly:

21 Guns from Saturday Night Live

* I give Billie Joe mad props. He never ever turned his back on his punk roots. I read an interview with him a few weeks ago where he was talking about a Bay Area punk band called Schlong who covered the whole West Side Story soundtrack in the early '90s. He's always given props, talked about Crimpshrine, Jawbreaker, J Church, all the bands he loved. On the new album, "Static Age" is the title of an old Misfits song, and another line is lifted from Social Distortion ("Mass Hysteria"). But it doesn't seem like a ripoff. It's more like him paying tribute to bands and songs that mattered to him. I respect that.

That guy STILL gives props to punk bands from 20 years ago, runs his own label, lets young bands record for free, still plays and records with Pinhead Gunpowder, etc. He never turned his back on punk for a second, even when you'd think it'd be easy to. It mattered to him, and he's always stood by it. Anyone who thinks they sold out is an idiot.*

In response to your point from Krist Noveselic (who probably knows a lil more about punk than we do)

"I hardly consider Greenday punk.." (random cool kid on Krist's Green Day 21CB review)

Krist Novoselic says:

You're being dogmatic. Green Day are a huge Rock band - the biggest in the world. And they are Punk.

Who's really adhering to Anarcho-Communalist values today anyway? Not many - even though there should be more of this "third way" instead of the usual left / right polarity

I enjoyed it, great album. As long as I don't have to hear American Eulogy, Before The Lobotomy or Christain's Inferno on the radio. Anything else of the recent would be welcome, though 21 Guns is a bit of a predicable choice (still a killer song).

My favourites are 21st Century Breakdown, Viva La Gloria!, Last Of The American Girls, Restless Heart Syndrome and Last Night On Earth.. but there are so many awesome tracks on it. I don't give a fuck if their punk or not, it's about the music not image/genre.

I expected them to sell about 500-600k

The album was officially released on May 15, so they sold 215,000 copies in three days. Warner Bros. Records wanted to align the release date world-wide, so the album doesn't have a normal-length's week of sales calculated. The incredible thing about this is that American Idiot debuted with 267,000 after a full seven days..

They're expecting another 300,000+ units to move by next Tuesday..

American Idiot is better, but I guess it can be a good listen.

When was it ever about Anarcho-Communalist values anyway?

Green Day are fucking boring and its truly testament to the fact that, at least in terms of a mass consumption level, punk will never exist with any consistency cuz its about the little guy, its about us down here and them up there, its about being original (which Green Day couldn't do if they tried). Punk does not belong and cannot exist on the kind of platform that Green Day are afforded.

Quite apart from all of that they're just lame. You can't take that Ramones ideal and then transplant it onto four other guys and try to make a career out of it, that ain't your life, it ain't your thing and quite frankly, you ain't that fucking good at it. Punk...incites...its stirs shit up, it isn't...this fuckin shit. It never will be...punk was a clear and present and tangible threat...a threat to the established order.

You wanna know what punk is? Here:

Just listen to that guitar. Ugh...awful isn't it? Sounds like a scrambler that needs a tune up. That energised unpolished teetering on the verge of collapse but just holding it together by the skin of their teeth quality it has. Its exciting, its feral, its vicious, its all four cylinders. You could bring out every Green Day performance on earth and i bet my balls to a barrel of bourbon that you CANNOT TOUCH THAT. Not by a long chalk. A helluva long chalk.

And y'wanna know why? Green Day choose to sound how they sound. The Sex Pistols couldn't've sounded any other way if they tried...and why on earth would we want them too anyway?

How'd ya like them apples?

I think its an insult to these bands, these seriously heavy serious intense motherfuckers that toured this entire fucking country relentlessly, went onstage with missed meal cramps and tore into this fuckin music because it was ALL THEY HAD. The shit weren't a fucking career move, it was people on labels like SST and Touch & Go that were literally starving, shuttling from gig to gig, playing every night like it was the last performance, that lived, breathed and believed in this fuckin movement, some of them died, some of them went nuts...and for all that, all that sacrifice, all that fuckin shit and what does it amount to? A bunch of weiners like Green Day?

I'm sorry but no sale.

I'm glad they refused to censor their album for Wal MArt. Fuck Wal Mart. They'll sell DVD's of movies with stuff WAY worse than any music cd contains, but expect bands to censor their music if they want it carried @ Wal Mart stores.

I give props to the guys for never abandoning their roots. I also remember when Billie got arrested for DUI a few years back. The cops never knew they had a "rock star" in their custody until after he posted bail. They said he never once mentioned his "status", like many in his position do to try to get out of things.

Ya see, this is where I disagree.

To quite John Lydon a couple of years ago: "Green Day aren't punk, they're plonk!"

Bit like Lydon these days then?

Yeah kinda..

But he's also the guy that walked away from the Pistols while on stage in '78.

"ever feel like you've been cheated"

He's also the guy who was the first to openly admit at press interviews that the Pistols reunions were a blatant cash grab.

He's the guy who formed PiL and made music that was different to anything going on at the time...and was known to play with his back to the audience.

Nothing fake about that...

When was it ever about Anarcho-Communalist values anyway?

I was wondering the same thing.

..you maybe

Krist Novoselic says:

I agree they are a huge rock band,I'm not so convinced about "biggest in the world".

And good at it too.

And they are Punk.

Are they "punk"??

How do you refer to a band that's culturally accepted as punk?

He now advertises butter too.

Nothing fake about him then, no. It's just lenny/ffrankwhite's endless worship of him does begin to get boring after a while.
