Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite. Quote
Bucketslash Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 (edited) I'm a bigger fan of genesis before collins. I didn't enjoy the powertrio work for that era and thought it wasn't as thought provoking or interestingI love the lamb lies down on broadway Edited September 24, 2009 by Bucketslash Quote

Bucketslash Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 If you don't cry, you're a poophead.i get it. but at the same time, it's too...like, the dead pan delivery, i get that it's supposed to be some quiet mumbling of someone depressed, and the feedback in the background symbolizing the pain, and the drum being the dull thud of a heart beat and etc., but it's honestly too chaotic. the feedback clashes with the other instruments and washes over, the vocals are too low, the acoustic is there for the actual accompaniment, and I get it, but i can't get into it. the feedback pulls me away from it instead of drawing me in. like a barbwire fence that while i'm supposed to appreciate the symbolism of but can't because i keep touching the barbs and getting cut when i lean in for the rest of it Quote

For me, it captures that feeling you get when you're coming down from a high -- sort of an understated, quiet but chaotic pain. And the lyrics are so simplistic yet I relate to them very much. That said, I have to be in the mood. That's the thing about a topic like this -- there are a whole variety of songs I turn to when I'm feeling sad. Sometimes it's the quieter stuff; sometimes it's "Free Bird." FuddMckagan Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 If I'm in that kinda mood, I usually listen to either Down In A Hole or Nutshell by Alice In Chains. I don't like to be in that mood too often though, so after I'll listen to Them Bones or Dam That River. Yay AIC Quote
