What’s soad? I know it normally stands for System of a Down, but you’re saying it like it’s a GnR song.

Exactly my thoughts. He might have meant SoD as Street of Dreams, but then there's already the Blues.
Mysterious. Alfred? Fn'andon't? Is there a secret CD version we don't know about? :D

I think it depends when the chidem stuff was written.

Slash did an interview in the early 00s where he said he would be completely open to doing an industrial type record if the band agreed with that direction. The band being the still 91 to 93 lineup.

Maybe, slash may have pushed back with doing the real experimental stuff because he knew axl was into whatever the latest musical fad was and thought GNR are not just not an industrial sounding band, and have sounded amaturish.

I personally think axl writing combining piano and rock, like Queen is what he should stick to.

When i listen to some of the songs from what should have been released in 99, some of them have slash written all over it ( the blues, catcher, soad). Which i dont think were experimental just rock/piano and were natural progressions from the illusion songs.

The thing with Chinese Democracy is that, even 20 years after the songs were written, they still don't sound dated. At all.

That's why I think they should totally bring CD2 songs to the new record. It's a timeless record and so are most of the leaks.

I love CD and I wish we would get a boxset with everything that was ever written. That would close the chapter for me. But at the same time, I think that stripped-down versions of those songs can really kick ass (aka the Hardschool treatment). That intro Duff did sounded waaaay better than the leak intro, and I'm really confident that they can 'GNRize' more of those leaks aswell.

What I don't want, though, is any of that Slash generic crap. He can keep those for SMKC

No one really wants to hear an ‘Industrial’ record now - whatever that actually means.

The irony is - it would probably sound more dated than an actual hard rock album. All that industrial stuff reminds me of the early 2000s.

Doing something different these days is more akin to going back to basics in my view

Agree.

Who decides what's sounding dated? And most importantly, who cares? I couldn't care less what anybody thinks about the music I love. And since when is this a criterion for good music? Is Paul Kossoffs guitar sound dated? Fuck off! Bob Hites vocals? Fuck off again! The drums on UYI? Lol.

Timeless is only that what I feel is timeless, only that, what I think that I'm as passionate about it now, as in 30 years. I'm the only one who's able to give an honest answer to these questions. Everybody can only answer these questions to himself.

Not really. Almost every single rock band these days is doing old school sounding shit. We have an endless amount of Led Zeppelin wannabe bands. If GNR went back to basics, I don't think it would sound all that dated and I'm sure it would be great, but it sure as hell wouldn't be anything unique or different.

In fact an industrial record would be much more unique right now, when almost every rock band is trying to sound old school. What ever approach they'll take I'm probably gonna enjoy it so I'm fine with anything. Just saying that an old school approach isn't anything different right now.

It truly depends on their ability. If the result is an just anoher rock album, then yes, it probably won't be anything special. But lets say they manage to create magic like they did back in the day. Maybe they surpass their selves and accomplish to create the much awaited follow up to the UYI records. If we take a look at the Axl/Slash songs, like NR, Estranged, Locomotive and Coma... or even songs like Civil War and DDM with Duff as contributor, they seem more than capable of doing that. IF THAT does happen than that would be pretty unique...

One can always dream!

I’ve not been impressed with SMKC apart from the odd stand out track (which tends to be really good TBF). I find it to be really generic stuff mainly - and I’m convinced Axl and Duff would raise it a few levels.

Likewise - Slash can elevate other songs ala NR and Estranged with the RIGHT solos that the song demands....it’s no coincidence that SMKC seems to miss ‘epics’ and CD didn’t really have straightforward hard rock.....they complimented each other back then. I think/hope they can still do it.

I think he purposely doesn't do any 'epics' in SMKC because he's not interested in them there.

Yep agree. With SMKC its just a straight ahead hard rock album. Nothing more nothing less. The epics stuff purely for guns. Then again the epic stuff we did have with Guns was right for those times. I hadnt heard the village leaks, so im keen to know if the instrumentals are short in length  or long. May give us an idea for the next GNR release..

The only fad in music i dont want to hear is the whole drop d tuning trend that occured in the late 90s early 00s.

Susan commented on Melissa's latest IG post "Beautious Maximus" ... I might be looking too much into it but considering she made a comment about the new album could that be a low key reference to the "Circus Maximus" leak ???

What leak  is this?

Maybe - although if he isn’t interested in them there then what would be the channel for them? Pre-reunion SMKC appeared to be his only channel as there was no ‘epics’ elsewhere.

I suppose my point is that Axl specialises in the epics which Slash can seriously lock into and elevate with the right solo etc and Slash specialises in the straightforward rock which Axl can elevate with the right vocal and lyric.

Its why they were dynamite and we all hope they can still be.....when we get something new......eventually......!
